For Beginners: How To Identify a Bad Retired Set And a Good Retired Se

How do you can identify a good set or bad set when you are planning to buy it, especially discontinued one:

-Price: Check the price of the following set at the time it was released. Sets like 6399 Airport Shuttle cost 2000+ US for a new and sealed copy and used and incomplete ones het 200-500 US on Bricklink. Sets that are bad usually has a low price for a new one. Good and great sets get a fortune on BrickLink.

Well this is the only method I can think of. Anyone with suggestions are welcome.
