Frank Brick Wright Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 (edited) I finally got the time to post here some work I have developed on custom hulls. Wanting the effect of the middle hull section being larger than the extremes, I found that was not possible using pre-fab hulls (although I admire CHG method for its idea I'm not yet a full fan of it). First, and after some posts I found here at Eurobricks, I started designing this: It is 33 studs long and piece count is 780!!! Time to start from the ground! All of you know the images of shipbuiding process. Inspired by them, I started again. (The black parts are for economic reasons) Missing the prow and stern, but it is already 40 studs long and has "only" 290 parts Edited September 22, 2011 by Frank Brick Wright Quote
Bjornu Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 The Batavia is also one of my favourite ships! Nice LDD Model it is already, But I think: If you have to buy it, It will be VERY expensive with your choice of brick types! Great model! Greetz Bjornu Quote
Captain Charles F. Harlowe Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 Can't see anything either. Harlowe Quote
Hiawatha Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 Is this it? Looks great! I can't wait to see this VOC completed ! I also like that model that you used! Quote
Big Cam Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 I finally got the time to post here some work I have developed on custom hulls. Please read this tutorial on Deeplinking pictures, because currently you're doing it wrong. How to deeplink images Quote
Captain Becker Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 I think your first model would look much better, but if you think your piece limi then i guess second option is goos too. I cant wait to see the finished product eep it up. Captain Becker Quote
Sebeus I Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 Interesting combination of arches and inverted slopes, I'd like to see where this is going Prow and stern are usually problematic parts, unless you were intending to use prefab ones ? Quote
Frank Brick Wright Posted September 23, 2011 Author Posted September 23, 2011 Please read this tutorial on Deeplinking pictures, because currently you're doing it wrong. How to deeplink images I actually read it before posting, and I've done everything in it. For some reason some of you can't see the pictures, any idea why? The Batavia is also one of my favourite ships! Nice LDD Model it is already, But I think: If you have to buy it, It will be VERY expensive with your choice of brick types! Great model! Greetz Bjornu I also considered that, but for great joy of my own I found a BL store in Poland (E.U., so no taxes! ) which is selling that arches in reddish brown. 24x0.09=2.16€, which is not very expensive *NewReddish Brown Brick, Arch 1 x 6 x 3 1/3 Curved Top Items For Sale: Parts: Brick, Arch: 6060 Loc: Poland, Min Buy: None A HandFul of Bricks (477) Qty: 239 Each: ~EUR 0.09 (PLN 0.423) Interesting combination of arches and inverted slopes, I'd like to see where this is going Prow and stern are usually problematic parts, unless you were intending to use prefab ones ? Well, I wasn't thinking in using prefabs, but I still don't know how I will do it, mainly the prow. I think I can solve the stern problem with , but for the prow I will try to find one solution soon. Thanks for feedback, I hope to post improvements soon Quote
Frank Brick Wright Posted October 2, 2011 Author Posted October 2, 2011 (edited) Seems I can't pass the hull part Anyway for my experience the rest is peanuts I'll post also (soon) some drawings I made for planning and also reference plans of the Batavia. Still... I was not happy enough with my new design. Also, I found out that making bows and sterns without trying in real bricks is only for pros and almost impossible So, I decided to use pre-fabs. Pre-fabs had two problems: one is to get tumblehome effect, the other problem is the proportions. After some simple math I checked proportions with 4/5 middle hull sections would be alright for normal ships. I present you now with a totally new (?) full method, consisting of custom/pre-fab hull, or semi-custom hull as I prefer to call it Well, it is 64 studs long and has "only" 250 parts... Progress has been made!?... Edited October 16, 2011 by Frank Brick Wright Quote
Captain Becker Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 It would be nice if i could se the pictures first..... They dont show up for me, but im looking forward to see them. Captain Becker Quote

Captain Becker For those of you who can't see the pictures (no idea why, I deep linked correctly) you can find them here: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=484506 6,7,8 are the current ship version Quote
Captain Becker Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 For those of you who can't see the pictures (no idea why, I deep linked correctly) I might know why, When you di upload them, did you clicked twice at the pictire? Or only once and then copyed the HTTP Adress? You should always click the pictures twice when you deeplink them before they are publick. Captain Becker Quote

Captain Becker Nope, I copied this link: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/BrickWright/Batavia/8.jpg which is, as you can see, correct Quote
Horry Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 The link tells me: Die Grafik "http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/BrickWright/Batavia/8.jpg" kann nicht angezeigt werden, weil sie Fehler enthält. In English that means: "http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/BrickWright/Batavia/8.jpg" can not be displayed correctly as there are errors within the file. If you are using firefox or other heavily plug-in (=third party) dependent browsers this might be a possible cause of version conflicts. Try to update your plug-ins and add-ons, me hearties. As for the uploader: avoiding special letters such as ä,ü,ö,ß,?,/ and trying to use a very simple conversion program such as Irfan View will generally increase the chance of being visible to the whole crowd - not all users have the most recent codec installed - including me - a mistake I will correct soon Quote
Frank Brick Wright Posted October 2, 2011 Author Posted October 2, 2011 (edited) I just don't get it. I use safari (I have a Mac) and I have everything updated, my file names are really simple, 1.jpg, 2.jpg, etc... About conversion programs I don't know what you mean, I just upload the pictures to brickshelf and then deeplink them to here. Totally confused. My Brickshelf folder hasn't been made public yet, I am waiting for admins' approval Edited October 2, 2011 by Frank Brick Wright Quote
Bart Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 I can't see the pictures either, with any of my webbrowsers, and everything is uptodate. but if I click your link to the brickshelf it says the folder is not public. maybe that is the problem? Bart Quote
Sebeus I Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Seen from the top the shape looks right. Have you figured out yet how to achieve the inward part of the tumblehome ? Quote
Frank Brick Wright Posted October 11, 2011 Author Posted October 11, 2011 Seen from the top the shape looks right. Have you figured out yet how to achieve the inward part of the tumblehome ? I am using plate 1x2 with 1 stud to make the offset and then I will use hinge bricks. Updates will perhaps come at the end of the week. I am having an issue, as I am building the gun's deck. Historically, ships' decks were extremely low. Here you have a picture of the Batavia gun's deck (hope everyone can see it): I would say this is 4 studs high, perhaps 5, when comparing to minifigure scale. Minifigs usually need decks 6 studs high to be able to stand up. What do you think? Should I build the deck 6 studs high for "minifig comfort" or 4/5 studs high? Quote
Sebeus I Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 I'd go for 5 bricks high (which equals 6 studs but I have the impression you meant bricks instead of studs) So a minifig can stand but not with decorated headgear Quote
Frank Brick Wright Posted October 14, 2011 Author Posted October 14, 2011 (edited) Yeah big mistake Anyway I try to post weekly updates, but this was a busy week so I didn't advanced a lot... Anyway my hull pieces don't have that holes, so no worries on that... Edited October 22, 2011 by Frank Brick Wright Quote
Sebeus I Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Shape looks good, I don't know about anyone else but I can clearly see your pictures. But maybe that's because I am also using safari on a mac (mac is the best ) Quote
Frank Brick Wright Posted October 22, 2011 Author Posted October 22, 2011 Of course it is! Just a small update, to record progress... Building the walls, at a 10º angle, was quite a pain... I had to constantly change coordinates… Also, the Batavia is a 24-guns ship, but I will place only 12, because I don't have so many and I really don't think it adds a lot, so I save a lot of money, and deck space Quote
Admiral Croissant Posted October 22, 2011 Posted October 22, 2011 I still can't see it. Could you also upload the pictures on your mocpages account? Quote
Sebeus I Posted October 22, 2011 Posted October 22, 2011 Looking good on the deck so far. I think it should be a bit more blunt on the bow. I don't know if you could fine any plans or top view of the real ship but I think such ships have their greatest width not in the middle but a bit more to the front of the ship. But I might be wrong, maybe it looks like that because you haven't build the part on the bow yet, it's dificult to say. Best way to find out would be to keep building and see Quote
