Superkalle Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 Just noticed this (thanks to mechamike): http://legoplatformer.com/showcase/ I guess it won't be too far in the future until a small app create our LDD files for us Quote
kyphur Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 I think you're making quite a leap there. This thing looks so cheesy that it will probably die a quick & silent death in just a matter of months. The whole "place stickers on your parts to scan them in" kind of blows the idea of scan a physical model and convert it to LDD file. Quote
Superkalle Posted September 19, 2011 Author Posted September 19, 2011 I think you're making quite a leap there. This thing looks so cheesy that it will probably die a quick & silent death in just a matter of months. The whole "place stickers on your parts to scan them in" kind of blows the idea of scan a physical model and convert it to LDD file. Yeah, I know it's a cheezy start but let's wait and see. And naturally the stickers shouldn't be necessary to make it usable. One obvious use case would be kids that have built their model and don't know how to proceed (maybe they've made an error along the way). Just bring up the web-camera and hookup to the TLG servers and presto - the error can be spotted in no time. But naturally TLG would need a reference data to compare the web-camed fodels with. Reference data that we LDD fans are creating as we speak in the "official sets" forum. It all fits together. We are creating history. "Yeah, I remember the LDD forum, back in 2011. That's where it all started you know. Those were the good days." Quote
alienwar9 Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 :oh: Oh the possibilities! Imagine an online database of people's moc's for easy instruction building...and all the mocists have to do is scan in their build (of course I'm guessing they'd have to scan in multiple stages of the build so that the program would know what pieces are on the inside ) Then there could be linking with bricklink to instantly order the pieces you need, so you could literally have the best MOCs being spread throughout the community so everyone can have fun with awesome skillfully made creations! Or you could, you know, jump a figure over some blocks Quote
hrontos Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 (edited) Man has to be slightly more optimistic, to see it as a future way of building LDD models. I mean, to apply 4 stickers on technic axle sounds at least strange, if not impossible. But may be, with faster processors in the future, it will recognize bricks without stickers. But even after that, it still somehow opposite of what I expect from LDD - and that is prototyping. LDD is good to test build before buying bricks and this way you have to have bricks before digital build. I have 4 years old daughter and as every kid, she likes to apply stickers and play such a simple computer games, so for kids of her age it is quite funny combination of computer and LEGO building game. And since some parental assistance is required to apply stickers correctly, it is not only building LEGO, but also building good parent/child relationship. It would be better to have it on PC with webcam and not only mobile version. The mobile screen is far too small for such target audience. Edited September 20, 2011 by hrontos Quote
Superkalle Posted September 29, 2011 Author Posted September 29, 2011 ...and here, only one week later, is the TLG product around a similar concept. That didn't take long LEGO press release: http://aboutus.lego.com/en-US/PressRoom/CorporateNews/article/354621.aspx found through Brickset Quote
