derLiebesmuskel Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 (edited) First off just want to say that I'm new to these forums and apologize in advance if I'm out of place with my posting. Just coming out of my "Dark Ages" and want to expand the love I had of the classic Pirate sets as a kid. I'm currently working on a ship but have been having some trouble deciding on a Swivel-gun design. I've seen a few I liked but none that had all the elements I really liked, so I made some myself. (To my knowledge this is an original design, my apologies if that is unknowingly false.) I wanted some that really looked true-to-life in scale and pattern but also had full "swivel" capabilities. This is what I came up with: Two different designs shown on some mock quarter deck railing (I'm aware the ramrods are too large for them, just put them in for effect) ^^This one is my favourite for a realistic cannon look, but I feel it's too long overall. ^^I feel this one has a good size to it, but lacks a little in the realism department. Comments, concerns, criticisms and critiques are quite welcome. Edited September 11, 2011 by derLiebesmuskel Quote
Horry Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 (edited) first of all, welcome to EB! I have to say that I like both of them. But since you are going for realism I'd suggest using the one using the round tubes with knobs (part 71076) - they display a much better barrel / calibre ratio and the diameter of the barrel would be much more realistic. Additionally, while the one utilizing technic-parts does have a nice style and the holding-part resembles a better trunnion than the ball bearing of the first swivel gun, the trunnion could not possibly be at the ficture of the bulwark as the elongated lever would make the recoil to swing around uncontrollably, endaering equipment and crew. However, you might find some nice advice on MOC-guns and cannons in the great pirate section index - there is a whole part about cannons! Oh and while I'm for sure no moderator, I fear that your pictures are too big. The board rules allow only 800x600 as stated here - the post also includes a tutorial as how to resize them correctly - it sure helped me when I got here, just a little advice! Admiral Croissant Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 I like it how you can move the cannon in every direction but indeed, the holding-part looks a bit fragile. So perhaps it's better to go for a more realistic design at the cost of movability. Here and here are two other options for swivel guns. Good luck Quote

Big Cam Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Since this thread is primarily about help on a MOC idea, I'll move it to the MOC forum. Quote

Hiawatha Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 I like your design and I really like the holder that you built under it for the cannon supplies. Quote
BrickPerfection Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 (edited) I must say I really like the hinge you chose allowing for both vertical and horizontal movement, a feature not every swivel design has. Quite clever part usage here! Also the technic pin makes the gun barrel look very realistic! However I notice the hinge should be directly below the barrel. click me I'm using my own swivel design, however it isn't perfect either as it extends too far from the railing, something your design doesn't. Nice idea, thanks for sharing! Edited October 9, 2011 by Perfectionist Quote

It says that hotlinking is forbidden - can you post an imbedded link instead? Edited October 9, 2011 by Horry Quote
BrickPerfection Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 It says that hotlinking is forbidden - can you post an imbedded link instead? Not a good idea to quote my post including said picture than, eh? Didn't know about that policy change; deeplinking used to be ok. Quote
Horry Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Yes, you are quite right - the direct link towards the picture says the same - with embedded I meant the actual website it would be displayed in as showing them directly from the website's server doesn't seem to be wanted. Quote
