Badsneaker Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 I'm working on a MOC of the Bates house from the Psycho movie. Looking for advice or suggestions about the second floor front windows. Do you guys/gals think I should move the windows over and have them centered under the arch windows on the roof? This would mean I'd probably have to move the 1st floor windows which would put them right up against the front porch. Let me know what you all think! Thanks! Quote
Capn Frank Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 You could have the second floor windows halfway between the first and third floor windows. Upon a quick google search on this house, I saw that the first and second floor windows are aligned one on top of the other. I would leave the windows where they are. Is this the house you are referencing? Quote

Sirens-of-Titan Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 If I may offer my humble advise; I think if you extend the windows downward until they almost meet the roof line it will solve your esthetic issue. Also there appears to be a decorative strip in the picture just below the second story roof line that you can add for balance, but other than that a fantastic job so far! Quote

F0NIX Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 If you think the gap on the inside of the 2nd floor window towards the center is to large, you can move both the 1st floor and the 2nd floor window one or two studs towards the center. But keep them aligned as they are now. Anyway, it is a nice house. Quote
Vincent Kessels Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 The second floor windows look a bit unbalanced, too much wall to the center compared to the outside. So I would move the windows one stud to the center. On the example shown by Phred the first floor windows are also very close to the balcony. However, if you're not sure you could use an image editor to see the effect. Quote
Badsneaker Posted September 9, 2011 Author Posted September 9, 2011 Thanks for everyones suggestions. I moved the 2nd floor windows in 2 bricks and also raised them 2 plates. Looks much better. I'll post more pics when its all done. Quote
Eldervampire Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 Hey man, anyway you slice it, that is a great model. I looked at it for awhile and understood your balance issue, then realized what I think is the cause. If you look images of it, there are no dormer window in the roof. Those two windows are causing the asymetrical view. Try removing tham and see if that brings the rest of it into line. But again, it's a wonderful house. Quote

Thanks Eldervampire, I considered taking those windows out but I really like them. I know the original Bates house doesn't have them, but I wanted to personalize it a little bit. Quote
sonicstarlight Posted September 10, 2011 Posted September 10, 2011 Do you guys/gals think I should move the windows over and have them centered under the arch windows on the roof? This would mean I'd probably have to move the 1st floor windows which would put them right up against the front porch. I wouldn't center the first two floor windows under the dormer ones, but I would move them towards the center by one stud if not two. Looking at the source material, the ground floor windows do line up with the ends of the porch, so I think it is fine for your build to do the same. Excellent work, by the way! Quote
Badsneaker Posted September 11, 2011 Author Posted September 11, 2011 Thanks again everyone. I took a little of everyones advice. I moved the 2nd floor windows over toward the center 2 bricks. I also raised the 2nd floor windows 2 plates higher.I left the 1st floor front windows where they were. I don't want them too close to the front porch. The house doesn't have to be exactly as the one in the movie for me, I still want to put my own touches into it. Here is the last photo before I finish it later this week. I'm waiting for one last Bricklink order. I will post some nice photos of the finished creation. BTW, if anyone needs the black 75 degree corner roof pieces, you can get them from LEGO service for .43 cents each. You have to order them on the phone. I have the element number if anyone needs it. The cheapest on BL is 1.40 or so. Not to take away from BL sellers but that is a BIG difference in price. I was going to originally go with grey since they are cheaper and more abundant but I really wanted black for the roof and I'm glad I spent the extra money. Most of you have seen my other haunted houses I did in the past and those had grey roofs. It just looks better in black I think. Quote

I think if you raise the porch roof 2 plates, it'll be much closer to the reference photo. Quote
