timslegos Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Hello all, Today i am trying something new; a WIP thread of my latest creation! I will be posting photos of my latest build as i work on it. I work on it at night after sports and homework are done. I will try to post photos of the build after each night of building! Steering: Rear arm: i do have a slight problem with the arm. I dont know how to fit the pf m motor into the arm and connect it to the LA, anyone got any ideas? tim Quote
olaf9198 Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 lookss nice i want to see it in actoin and when its a moc but i have no idea for the backhoe arm Quote
captainmib Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 i do have a slight problem with the arm. I dont know how to fit the pf m motor into the arm and connect it to the LA, anyone got any ideas? tim Nice start in the first place. Second, why not try to do it the hard way, like in the 8043, so connect the LA's to the chassis? I think that will be more challenging and better looking. (adding motors right to the LA seems a bit meh to me, but that's my opinion... ) Quote
sunnyx Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 Same suggestion, for the arm, use universal joints and place the motor in the main body, like in the 8043 Excavator. Anyways, project looks good so far, can't wait to see it in action Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 (edited) Tim i agree with the above it is far easier running the axles to the la's through the arm remember that the middel of the u joint has to be were it pivots , do think sadly that you may need to rebuild your back arm , the la that moves the dipper is sticking out over the back of the boom, there is also no kink in the boom wre you would find one.But keep it up i see i will have to step up to the plate and build something else my self. (adding motors right to the LA seems a bit meh to me, but that's my opinion... ) Unfortunately the motors for the other LAs in the boom would block the path. Also, since only 2 functions could be driven through the turntable, i didn't think it would work. Maybe i can experiment when i get back on Monday. I am away for the weekend so i cant build . But keep it up i see i will have to step up to the plate and build something else my self. You totally should!!! tim Edited September 8, 2011 by timr Quote
dhc6twinotter Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 Cool cool! I like it! Backhoes can be a challenge to build. I'm looking forward to this thread. Quote
Jurgen Krooshoop Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 (edited) Looks like you're trying to build something I finished some time ago. I used this technique to integrate an M-motor into the digging-arm. For your inspiration: you can find more pictures and info on my website Edited September 9, 2011 by Jurgen Krooshoop Quote

As for the arm, last night i developed a similar monting for the m motor as you, although not quiet as elegant. i will post photos on monday. tim Quote
Jurgen Krooshoop Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 I'll be following your progress gladly. I'm curious on how you will will solve the many problems you'll encounter building a model like this. Quote

Thanks for the kind words :) This MOC is especially difficult because it wil be my first all studless model! Tim Quote

timslegos Posted September 12, 2011 Author Posted September 12, 2011 Hello, So unfortunately i wont be able to post anymore pictures until probably next week. With all the school work of being in accelerated classes and then soccer games/practices everyday i have very little time as of now. I stil have time to build late at night once everything is done, but not enough time to post pictures. Sorry to keep you all waiting . tim Quote
timslegos Posted September 24, 2011 Author Posted September 24, 2011 Finally an update!!!! Finally i have rebuilt the arm to my liking. I have completely redone the rear excavator arm to include the bend in first arm and to remove a motor from he boom. But now that i have redone the arm, it seems slightly to big for the rest of the chassis . What do you all think? I tried making the arm similar to Jurgen's, without completely copying his design . The new arm also folds up very nicely. The new arm has a super long reach. Longer than the entire chassis! Is that prototypical? Finally, a detail photo of the arm hinge and attachment point. I had to be a little cleaver to fit all the motors and gearing in . Please tell me what you think!! tim Quote
Milan Posted September 24, 2011 Posted September 24, 2011 Nice update. First, i dont think the arm is too big for the chassis. Actually it depends on what particular machine your model is based on. I suggest you take the pdf file from manufacturer and scale it to fit your model. That way you can make accurate moc. Second, i dont like turntable section connecting arm and chassis...it looks too fragile and weak, and when arm is max extended it bends and friction is a issue then, i guess. I solved that in two of my backhoes by making chassis in studs and using old big turntable. It runs smoothly regardless of angle of the arm. Great build so far! Keep up:) Quote

I know what you mean about the sagging arm. This is my first all stud-less build so im trying to keep it mostly stud-less. I think building the rest of the frame will help stiffen it up as well. olaf9198 Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 milan has right but you can make the turntable higher and at the and a beam that is conectet to the lower chassis ps i want to make a pic wen this is not clear Quote

Alasdair Ryan Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 Nice to see more progress you need to work on the rear slew ring as it is sagging. Quote
timslegos Posted September 26, 2011 Author Posted September 26, 2011 Hello, yet another update . So i finished the front arm. i am not completely happy with the travel of the arm, but the LA's just don't have good travel. But i am happy with the size of the arm. it looks very nice in scale with the back arm. I am also very happy that the bucket can lift the front end off the ground, so when the back stabilizers are lowered, the entire machine is lifted off the ground! Just a detail shot of the LA's attachment. Ohh and i am finally have my channel monetized, so I'm making money off you tube as a teenager !!! http://www.youtube.com/user/timslegos tim Quote
dhc6twinotter Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 Awesome! I have a dumb question: How are you going to control 9 functions? Will you have some manual functions as well, or are you going to build some sort of gearbox? Quote
timslegos Posted September 26, 2011 Author Posted September 26, 2011 How are you going to control 9 functions? Will you have some manual functions as well, or are you going to build some sort of gearbox? Unfortunately the stabilizers will have to be manually controlled . I was originally going to try to do a gearbox similar to the one on the 8043 excavator, but it was taking up to much room so i abandoned the idea. tim Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Great work looking forward to the next update. Quote
timslegos Posted September 27, 2011 Author Posted September 27, 2011 next update should be more ascetics, which is not my strong suite . tim Quote
