ziljin Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 For a second there I was afraid my lego collection was going to be destroyed. 5.8 earthquake in Virgina. Quote
MCNwakeboard Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 (edited) I am sure there will be a set or two on the ground when I get home since I have some displayed on a shelf that isn't very stable. Edit: Only had a prison tower fall over. Edited August 24, 2011 by MCNwakeboard Quote
Scouty Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 I hear it was 5.9. But, yeah, I felt it here in east PA. Very cool and freaky. I've felt an earthquake in Portugal (it's rather prone to tremors), it's just something not common here. Quote
-R8- Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Yes, we felt it here in southern New York. Apparently, many buildings in Manhattan were evacuated for a short period of time. In my own home, I could hear the ceiling fan rattle and shake (though at the time I didn't know what was going on). Thankfully it didn't fall off and hit me! I checked the LEGO I have in my display case, and everything seems to be alright. Quote
Nightshroud99 Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 I live about 50 miles away from the epicenter and felt it. Quote
CP5670 Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 I am in northern Virginia and was surprised at how little of my Lego was damaged given how powerful it felt. A few models fell off their display shelves (things like the UCS TIE Interceptor that are prone to falling over anyway if the shelf is bumped), but there was no real damage to anything. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 I don't live anywhere near it and didn't feel it, but I wanted to point out that this thread is a great example of how obsessed we LEGO fans are - there's an earthquake that forces evacuations and the first thing we talk about is how much LEGO was knocked off shelves. Quote
CP5670 Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Good point. It wasn't exactly a big earthquake though, only powerful by the standards of this region (Californians would laugh at this ). Lego models and some soap bottles were the only things that fell down at all here. Quote
K-Nut Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 I hope your all doing alright over there. I have surprisingly never felt an earthquake. I also hope your collections are safe. Yeah Brickdoctor, me too! Quote
Big Cam Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 All I can say is living in the geographical center of a continent has it's upsides. I like usual didn't feel a thing and likely never will. North Dakota doesn't get earthquakes, but I do hope everyone is ok. Quote
blueandwhite Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 We felt it way up here in Ontario (Canada). Wobbly is the only way to describe it here as there weren't any true tremors or anything like that. Quote
Scouty Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 It was just a gentle sway here. I imagine it was more violent at the epicenter, but so far, there's been minimal damage. Quote
kermit Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 It was very strong here in New York luckily when I got home all the shelves were still up and not one of my mini-figures fell down weird . Quote
Seluryar Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Felt it in NE Ohio, never thought I would feel an actual earthquake in my life Quote
22kane Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Got a little tremor here in Philly. Kinda weird. I've always loved Pennsylvania for the fact that we don't get hurricanes and earthquakes. So much for that. Quote
Scouty Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Got a little tremor here in Philly. Kinda weird. I've always loved Pennsylvania for the fact that we don't get hurricanes and earthquakes. So much for that. And there's a hurricane coming up, so, sorry Quote
JimBee Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Apparently it could be felt all the way in Milwaukee... but I didn't feel a thing. Glad to hear there was minimal damage, though. Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Felt it here in Charleston, WV. I think it's about 250mi (402km) away. First one I've ever felt. It freaked a lot of people out at work. Everyone on our block and surrounding blocks where evacuated for a brief period. It was very different to say the least Quote
Brickdoctor Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 (Californians would laugh at this ). Living on the west coast, I can confirm that. Quote
Pirate Pete Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 I felt a little bit here in western PA, just a little bit, thank goodness. Quote
dr_spock Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 I didn't feel it but my co-worker did in the adjacent office. Quote
1980-Something-Space-Guy Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Living in Central America makes you get used to earthquakes. None have knocked some of my Lego stuff out of its place though. Quote
Gryphon Ink Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 It's very strange, we are in Connecticut, and I didn't feel a thing, but my wife, who was maybe ten miles from me at the time, said she felt quite a tremble. All of the high-rise buildings downtown were evacuated, although of course nothing happened. I've lived places where we had stronger quakes almost every year, but you just don't expect earthquakes in Connecticut. Kind of like the tornado that hit in Massachussetts a few months ago - how weird must that have felt? But I was hearing on NPR that the East Coast used to have quite a few earthquakes in the 19th Century, so maybe we've just been lucky until now... Quote
K-Nut Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Apparently it could be felt all the way in Milwaukee... but I didn't feel a thing. Glad to hear there was minimal damage, though. Really? Well that proves one thing. When posting on EB you disregard the outside world. Quote
Studs Not On Top Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 I felt it here in Maryland. As I was in the basement and slightly underground, I really felt the shake. It sounded like a bad wind storm, which is normal in my area. It was my first experience of the kind; I'm just glad it didn't do too much damage. Quote
