Tomcat RIO Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 Hi all, here with my latest MOC while waiting for bricks and parts to arrive for the Port. This is a Atakebune/Sekibune, a type of Japanese Ironclad ship used in the 13th to 16th century samurai era shoguns warships for coastal combat, and during their invasion of Korea in 1500s. The atakebune is a larger, dual powered( sail and oars) version of the smaller Sekibune. The shape is similar to the Korean Panekon turtle ships, which share a similar lineage from more ancicent Chinese vessels. Google is a good friend for more info. If I can remeber, I havent seen one before on EB or BShelf. So without much prior references, I built one up from images on google. This MOC will form part of the international fleet (with my Arabian Xebec and Chinese junk) that will raid my port soon. the bow is from a viking longboat, resprayed in tan side of hull the rear needs some cleaning up, especially the shrine more paddlers needed! This shows the 2 tier arrangement, battlements in middle and oarsmen at bottom most a samurai firing through the battlement Quote
Tomcat RIO Posted August 13, 2011 Author Posted August 13, 2011 a view of the top deck. Here Samurai and Geisha come in handy the hanji character is 'Jiang', for 'General'. Also note painted bamboo curtains lack of an interior in the little retreat, so Kimono girl blocks the path at the moment flipping open the roof reveals the Daimyo's secret hiding place for his Ninja, ready to carry out covert operations finally a close up of the painted Daimyo in robes. Warhorse47 Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 A truly outstanding job! You captured the "flavor" very well. Quote
Norrington Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 (edited) The painted dynamo torso and robes, I REEEEAAALLY like. You did it very well. As far as the ship goes, my main issue is the poly-chrome, it just sort of distracts from the design of the vessel, but definitely kudos to you for working the colours into sort of a colour scheme and design, the "mixing" not withstanding. You say this is related to Turtle-ships, (my first introduction to turtle-ships and this sort of vessel was some years back in the early 2000s, with games like "Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings" and its expansion, "The Conquerors"). Turtle Ship Elite Turtle Ship I think sitting it lower to the water would probably aid it's realism, if you're going more towards that design, but I think the 2-deck with a cabin atop it design could work very well if rendered a bit more realistically in it's design and style, even if the ship and it's actual form are a bit exaggerated and stylized. I hope to see more of this in the future :) Edited August 14, 2011 by Norrington Quote

Tomcat RIO Posted September 15, 2011 Author Posted September 15, 2011 Finish up the Atakebune v2.0 Added mast and sails. Shifted entire boat onto a 32x16 baseplate for ease of play and handling, also remove internal tan plates to be used on other mocs. some rearrangement of rear stern, and deck rails. Lowered the brick count full complement of rowers - most of my faded vintage castle minifigs -ROW YOU SLAVES! external view of the rowers view of the decks. custom cannon Daimyo is briefing 2 ninjas for the next mission. 1 is a ninjago cole, the other is a ex-star war royal guard with change head close up of the water area, with simulated waves. And also a picture of the edited stern. Quote
Tomcat RIO Posted September 15, 2011 Author Posted September 15, 2011 Comments and feedback definitely welcome!! This ship forms part of the trio of my MOC Asian pirates fleet. Quote
