Mythos Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 Ok my husband has decided on which of his armies hes going to use for his fort, but he now needs an army to attack it, so he is asking around on what he should use: Right now hes trying to figure out what shield type to use (out of the three shown or get something else) and whether to use the kilt or not, and if he should have helmets on the spearmen or the archers (and what type if any?). heres a couple of pics to get an idea of the designs to use: Quote
AwesomeStar Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 (edited) I've been following your husband's MOC closely (though haven't yet had the time to post a comment on the thread) and it's a real treat. I'm pleased to see that his ideas for minifigs are just as good as his ideas for the buildings. I would suggest that he keeps the kilts - they're interesting, clever and it's not often that you get to see minifigs centered around that celtic style. I feel that neither of the three shield types work that well. Perhaps the shields from the Viking line would suffice? Just my own suggestions, I look forward to seeing what he comes up with! -A.S. He was thinking of using the shields from the vikings line, but he'd have to order those and ordering a couple hundred could get pricey, as it goes his fort is supposed to be around 600-500 BC on the greek border country, and the Celt's/Gauls (and so on) clan warriors have been around alot longer then that (they just didn't brag about it like the Greeks/Egyptians/Romans, etc..)so he figured they would make a good barbarian force to attack the fort. but its a matter of coming up with a fig design, as it goes he'll be using that torso design since he has several hundred of those still lying around in a tub, same with the legs, the kilts he planned on using on his Roman's but they didn't look good on them so hes thinking of recycling them for this project, problem is his only weapon he has alot of is the BF Falcata in Dark Grey so that might be their weapon of choice, which isn't historically accurate much, he might have some Silver Gladius's hanging around but not enough. as it goes hes hoping to avoid haveing to spend money on anything and using what he has, but that might not be an option. ziljin Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 to save money on shields, you could use 2x2 round plates, or 2x3 plates, or 2x4 plates. Quote
Mythos Posted August 4, 2011 Author Posted August 4, 2011 to save money on shields, you could use 2x2 round plates, or 2x3 plates, or 2x4 plates. believe it or not he thought of that a little bit ago and was trying to think about it. Quote
Wardancer Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 I agree with AwesomeStar that none of the shields seems perfect. The brown one looks to elaborate, it would fit a fast fine warrior better than what seems to be a rather brute and crude fighter. The gray squared one looks to big and "institutionalised", as in a roman army or medieval one with very accurate regiments, most likely with spears. It kind of undermines the "barbaric look" of the fig. The gray round one looks ok, but also too big for my taste. What came to my mind were the shields of the spartan, the viking, the upcoming mel-gibson-like "highlander" or any other small round shield. The dark dwarfs shield from series 5 would be perfect in shape, but not in colour. Another, cheaper option could be to use a 2x2 round radar dish with an extra handle inserted, but I do not know in what colours they are available. I did it for my custom wood elf assasin becaus I wanted a really small shield. Quote
Stiel Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 There is a shield coming up with a supposed series 6 collectible minifigure: Is that an option? Quote
Mythos Posted August 4, 2011 Author Posted August 4, 2011 Actually he decided to go with the 2x2 reddish brown round plate with a 1x1 met. silver round plate in the middle for the boss, he believes this is more appealing as the old Celt small round shield which was also like a Buckler. Quote
Hoboman Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Now the shield seems done, the other question is still on the table. If he is trying to save money then I would use the helms he has for the sword troops first and once he runs out then use any hair he has for the bowmen etc. Also if this is early celts I would nto worry about having the helms the same on every guy anyway. Mix and match them as his supplies allow. Just my .02 Quote
Big Cam Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Far left for sure, it just looks the most complete to me. Quote
Mythos Posted August 4, 2011 Author Posted August 4, 2011 Well he had to make an order for the plates needed but heres how his army is coming along(1st image shows a couple troops with shield hes going to use): Quote
tedbeard Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 That torso with the kilt really gives a good Amazon warrior effect. Quote
Big Cam Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Wow, looking good. Those torso's are awesome. Quote
Skipper Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Awesome. Those shields turned out great, it's the perfect size. How many are you planning to make? Quote
Mythos Posted August 4, 2011 Author Posted August 4, 2011 Awesome. Those shields turned out great, it's the perfect size. How many are you planning to make? he'll probably make a couple hundred since the fort will house about 100 troops in it. Quote
Donut Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Are the shields from your first and second photo made by BrickTW? Quote
Mythos Posted August 4, 2011 Author Posted August 4, 2011 Are the shields from your first and second photo made by BrickTW? the round one and square one are BrickTW products in fact the link to their forum is in my signature. Quote
Hoboman Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 The 2x2 round shield looks great. I love how they turned out and they do really fit the look of the army. Well Done. Quote
Beefbanana Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 I would say you should give most of them spears, but they look quite cool with falcata's. And I like the kilts! You should keep them. Quote
