Yepp, the import/export Ldraw feature in LDD is not the greatest. It hasn't been touched by the LDD developers for years. The main control of how bricks are translated is governed by the LDRAW.XML file, which is occaionally updated. Read more here. Updating to the latest file could give you better results. Also (but I'm not sure it matters), you could try to turn on Extended Mode before importing since it seems to be missing a lot of bricks during import. Quote
