Very interesting thread.

I've only been MOC'ing to a significant degree since late last year. Until then I had been a bit precious about not mixing my sets up but once you have something you just want to build you become a bit more ruthless.

I haven't crossed the line with special sets like the Grand Emporium or the Fire Station (apart from borrowing it's roller door), Architecture sets, Frigate, etc. Mostly I've been getting my MOC parts from Creator and City sets.

> whole buildings are brick heavy.

Tell me about it. There is a lot to be said for doing facades or backless buildings but I just can't help myself. I've gone through a large number of Apple Tree Houses and Log Cabins in the last 6 months. My latest build is consuming Lighthouse Islands like they are going out of fashion.

Main thing is to give it a go. I built a cool plane out of beaten up old bricks my mate saved from being thrown on the dump the other day. See if you can pick up some bricks at garage sales to get started.

I recently came into a bit of money. I plan on buying both the Apple Tree House and the 2010 Airport while I'm out today. I desperately need window pieces, and that set seems to have a nice variety. Also, it's on clearance, so I'm getting it for about $20 cheaper. This will be the first time I get a new Lego set and won't build it, instead sorting the pieces into my collection. That's a step forward. :)

I'm definitely going to spend more time investing in Creator sets. They do look like great parts packs.

Foolio, I'd love to.

I'm also going around to friend's houses and asking how much they're willing to sell their old Lego collections for. Most of them seem slightly attached to their Lego, but I think I could actually get some good deals. I might try garage sales also. Thanks so much everybody for responses.

Hi,

My plan is to start building a LEGO Town/City this summer.

My initial plan is to start with official sets, I have quite a few from my childhood (I'm not 17 ) so I figured I'd get them built up and start to arrange my city and then start to MOD/MOC depending on my need but I figured that the official sets would at least get me started.

I do like that. I'm only personally keeping vehicles and my McDonalds alive. I think I'm going to try to jump right into MOC buildings.

Please post pictures at some point. I'd be curious to see your layout.

You've gotten a lot of great advice here. You may also look in your area and see if there is a LEGO club you can join. You can gets lots of on-hands experience and advice there.

I personally learned a lot of cool techniques from the some of the official LEGO modulars. I know they are pricey, but you can learn a whole from building them. They also make great parts packs to make your own buildings. If you can get your hands on the Fire Brigade or Grand Emporium, build it then take it apart and make your own building. If your concerned about keeping pieces from sets together, grab some shoe boxes, label them and keep all the pieces for a specific set in them. Then if you want to rebuild it another time, you'll have all the pieces in one place. Keep all the original boxes and instructions too.

I really like the 4 wide cars from the old sets and think they fit fine with the Modulars. Like Ralph says, MOC'ing your own cars takes a lot of small pieces!

I have 2 pics to share. The first is my very 1st MOC, after purchasing the Green Grocer. Its the green building. The 2nd is a later MOC after many days and nights and months of building.

Good luck, don't worry about what other people think, get started and post some pics!

There are no Lego clubs around here. Small town in northwestern Indiana. It's a wasteland.

I'm reading the instruction manuals for them. I can't afford them, but there are some great techniques there.

I also recently shoved most all of my sets into bins and sorted them by color. It's time for me to say goodbye, to most at least. I couldn't let a few go to that though. :P

Wow! Your MOC's are spectacular! Intimidating that that was your first. :D
