The current Lego PF motor #88002 is not available and seems it won't be until November. I noticed a similar motor (#8866) that is available and I was curious if it works with the PF accessories. I took the motor from the current cargo train set to power my Maersk engine and would like to replace it. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am new to the whole PF thing.

wow that is slightly crazy about it not being available until November. The 8866 is a 9V equivalent and will work power functions

equipment with the proper cable (#8886 cable) has 9V to PowerFunction conversion.

I hope that helps. I dont know how the two products compare performance-wise. All I know one is specifically geared for Power Functions (the one with a built-in wire) and the other is the 9V system (the one without).

From memory both work very well; the main difference is that the more recent PF with cable one has improved pulling power / battery usage than the older one (which was the 9V replacement)... but for most cases you probably wont spot the difference.

I had bought a load of the 8866 when there was a good lego discount in 2010; and recently found them unused. PM me if interested.

8866 might work for the Maersk, but I think you're better off just waiting until 88002 is available. While it looks the same and can be hooked up to a PF extension cable (with some issues on anything other than a train base) it is far from being the same.
