StoutFiles Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 (edited) Dissatisfied with the 7879 design, I've decided to try building my own small base. The main goal of this design is to separate important rooms while making an attempt at movie accuracy (unlike 7879). It will never fully be complete until I get 7879, but I should be able to finish 90% of it with the pieces I have lying around. Here's the design I have so far. Note this has to fit on a 4 foot by 1 foot shelf, and there will need to be leftover room for a turret defense and an approaching AT-AT. I think this is as big as I can let it be. This is the design I always hoped TLG would make, either #1 and #2 as separate sets or one big one. Oh well. I'll update late tonight with pictures. EDIT: Here are some pictures, sorry for the quality. Now just waiting for 7879 to finish it up. Hopefully people will get some ideas from this for their own Echo Base designs. EDIT 2: Enlarged base. This will be filled with the medical items from 7879. Edited July 8, 2011 by StoutFiles Quote
Brickdoctor Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Sounds good. I don't think you'll able to fit a T-47 and a T-65 across from each other on a one-foot deep shelf, though. Unless you plan to stick the T-65's nose between the two T-47s. Quote

Unless you plan to stick the T-65's nose between the two T-47s. The bridge will be there but the T-65 won't. It's just too big to fit in the base without taking up all the room in the ship bay. I could always take the bridge out if it looks dumb without a T-65 there. Quote

pedro Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Interesting plan! I'm keen to see how this turns out, especially incorporating both 7666 and 7869. Will you be including a Tauntaun pen (doesn't look so at the moment)? Quote
StoutFiles Posted July 7, 2011 Author Posted July 7, 2011 Pictures put in the first post. No Millennium Falcon? No room. I have another shelf for it anyway with other ships from the asteroid scene. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 Looking good so far. Do you plan to tile it over? The base appears a little cramped, which is to be expected with a compacted design like this, but I think fewer studs might help lessen that effect. Love your signs, by the way. Quote
wokajablocka Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 I would look nice if you left stud foot prints where the minifigs have been walking but smooth tile any area the has not be walked, just like the awsome Hoth MOC that was done a few years ago. Quote
Kaitan Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 Looks great so far! If you are really going for a more accurate look, the walls in the corridor could do with some pipework and/or cabling. I think an interesting challenge would be to create an Echo Base set but sticking to the same budget as the official set. Might be a bit of a wake up call... Kaitan Quote

That's something to consider for sure. I will likely leave it in playset form but I will try to add more tiled pieces where I can. This will never match some of those thousand dollar MOCs, sadly. Kaitan I agree, definitely needs more piping. I'm not stocked in that so in the future sometime. I think an Echo Base challenge would be fun, see if someone could make something from 7879 that's better than what TLG designed. Quote
Fallenangel Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 Any chance of replacing the T-47s? In my opinion the stock sets look too big in the base, though that may be due to the compactness of the latter. Quote

In my opinion the stock sets look too big in the base, though that may be due to the compactness of the latter. I could always remove one of them. I need to represent the snowspeeder though, and outside the base it looks bad if it gets too close to the AT-AT due to their scale differences. I'll see what I can do though. Quote
Mr Man Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 Looking good StoutFiles. I love the Command Centre. I agree that only one Snowspeeder would be better. Quote
pedro Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 Plans yestreday, model today - you made quick work of this Stoutfiles! This is looking great so far. If you follow what has been suggested and remove one of your snowspeeders, you can always place it in the 'outside' section, crashed into the ground. If I could suggest anything further, it'd be to lighten up the floor in the hangar area: lighter shades, more patches of snow. Quote

I believe most good T-47 MOCs are bigger than the stock sets. (or at least of the ones I've seen) Quote
StoutFiles Posted July 8, 2011 Author Posted July 8, 2011 I enlarged the base slightly per everyone's opinions. Both T-47's can rotate 360 degrees (they are both on swivels used in 7666). I think this looks better than before, and I feel it's worth the cost to shrink the battlefield slightly. Quote

ScoutTroopy Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 wow im surprised how similar this is to my hoth layout in terms of the deliberate integration of the existing lego sets, i am also waiting for the new hoth base set to be released to finish my own layout as well... hopefully it will be a good set :) Quote
