I've been watching this forum very closely and love all your labours of love. I would like to build an MOC myself starting with some buildings closer to home here in Singapore.

Was wondering if there was a thread on how to start:

1. What type of buildings would be a good start - something small I suppose? Or should I begin with vignettes.

2. Bricks - I don't have that many considering all my old Lego's have been donated to orphans. Are there existing sets that I can just purchase and rip open for their contents so I can use for my MOC's.

3. Base plates - is there a size that you use?

I love the Lego Modular buildings and the details in has. I am inspired to do something similar and am really keen to show you guys what I can do too!

Any help will be much appreciated!

Well, first decide shops or houses or both.....then buy some city sets with building components in them (panels, windows and doors) plus creator house sets....any of them will give you the roofing parts needed to start.

Your first should be simple and then progress further as you build each one, that's how I started and look what I do now !

I'm sure you will get even more advice from my fellow townies.....so Brick On 'enrgie' !

Thanks for coming back to me so quickly.

To answer your question, I would like to build a City! But I intend to start with houses as my girlfriend is quite keen to build it with me!

What about the existing MOD range? I have read on this forum that the Emporium is a very good set to get duplicates as it will give me the basic building pieces that I need. Price per brick seems good too. Any other set which makes you go "I've gotta get that for the parts!"?

Price per part, the modulars are hard to beat. The creator houses come pretty close though.

Bricklink is a great source for bricks too, and since you can order individual parts better than whole sets unless most of the set is useful to you.

avoid getting those boxsets of bricks unless you need 2xX bricks. they can be "hard" to use most times.

Advice: Bricklink is addictive!

Which boxsets you referring to? MOD or Creator?

i was referng to those boxes which either come in a plastic container or normal boxes (with display of a mess of brcks outside)

on the other hand, modular and creators are good.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll go grab a few boxes of those Creator sets. MOD too.

Any other suggestions for a budding MOCer?

I especially recommend Creator set 6754. Get it while it's still on the shelves and you'll have a large quantity of bricks (around a thousand, with a lot of tan) for a decent price.

I second using Creator sets to build your collection. They are the basis of what I use for my MOCs. (I can't bear to take my modular buildings apart and I can't afford multiples or they would be a good source of pieces.) I also think they are good for building a repertoire of simple building techniques because they have multiple instructions to try out. I use my old building manuals for reference a lot for one reason or another when making MOCs.

As far as base plates, it really depends what you're trying to make. I'm fairly new to attempting good MOCs so I usually don't work on anything bigger than the 16x32 stud plates.

And I think it's best to build whatever you are inspired to build. I keep a little notebook of ideas of what I want to build and what I realistically think I can build with my limited brick collection and skills. I usually start with a small idea and it grows as I work on it and get into my brick collection.

Good luck and have fun.

Thank you again!

I am looking at the Creator set you mentioned but I reckon it's not sold here in Singapore anymore.

I have however found 5771 and 5891. Are these worth the sets?

If you can make use the parts, they certainly are. :classic: I'd start with 5891 because that seems to be at the end of its lifespan now – with the new 5771 as successor – and may be discounted in many shops; though I'm not sure since it isn't that old yet. At any rate, I just got another 2 from Amazon Germany at 25% off, for instance. (And I also don't like the bright red roof on the new one that much for my modulars...)

Thanks! To be totally honest, I do not know of yet what type of buildings I will be making but stocking up on bricks was my first port of call. There are a certain number of structures I am seeking to build - namely the shops close to where I live at the moment. They are small so will make a good start for me.

5891 followed by 5771.

it may sounds weird, but sometimes when I see a MOC I really like, I try to copy it.

in this way you'll discover and learn many new techniques for building your own MOC in the future!

the good way is to make your copy as close in details as the original. following this "rule" you'll be forced to find out the new snot (stud not on top) and so on techniques used by the best lego moc-ers out there and then have new ideas for your future creations.

nb: I'm not saying to copy a building and make it yours!!!

have a nice lego day

Agreed! I am building up my repository of MOC designs really quickly. I hope it's not taboo on this site to copy and then put it up. Of course, I won't claim it as mine!

personally I would not be angry if someone copy one of my moc and use it in his layout (it would make me very proud of my creation), and I would not be angry as well if someone take inspiration to make a mod of my moc and post it, as long as there is a credit, but I don't see the point of making a copy and post it in a forum... copy to increase your personal experience it's ok though!

Well there's a saying that imitation is the highest form of flattery! I just bought myself 2 boxes of 5891 and 1 box of 5771. Gonna build them up wi my girlfriend and then tear them down. We are hoping to do our first very own MOC together. Hopefully it turns out nice. Will post my really noob creation over the next few days.
