LegoFranks Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I'm rapidly running out of room in the attic for all the set boxes that I keep after purchasing, in case I wish to sell them on in the future. However, I need the space for other things plus I fear it may be a fire hazard. Should I get rid of all the common set boxes and keep the boxes of rare sets such as Cafe Corner and Shuttle Adventure? Cheers for any advice. M. Quote

They'll probably bring in more money if you're able to sell them with their boxes, although I don't think the price difference between a set with box and a set without the box is significant once the box has already been opened and the set built. I put the boxes in recycling, but then again, I look at sets as parts packs for my own models. Cheers, Ralph Edited May 23, 2011 by Ralph_S Quote
Siegfried Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Sadly yes. I don't keep many of mine anymore... Quote
lightningtiger Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Well what ever Cars2 and POTC sets I buy I'm keeping the boxes, with Cars2 you can store the cars in their boxes. Quote
FishHead Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I just don't think today's boxes will ever have the same appeal, or value, as the "classic" boxes that showed multiple alternative models, etc. Quote
LegoFranks Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 Guess I'll have to order a lot of recycling sacks then! I guess it's all down to how much storage space you have, how dry the area is, etc... M. Quote
gotoAndLego Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Either break them all down flat or keep the rarer boxes like lego exclusive sets. Even those I would break down flat. Quote
LegoFranks Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 They are mostly broken down flat, but there's over 500 of them... M. Quote
Vindicare Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I started off keeping boxes, but the piles became too large, and since I'm not planning on selling them. Even as someone mentioned, the dollar value isn't much. I'd say toss them. Quote
bricklayer Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I say keep em. Theres nothing like having the original box.....even if it doesnt increase the value. Just buy another house Quote
LegoFranks Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 Well, most of them are now in the recycling sacks and off to make tomorrow's collection. If I actually owned my own house, I'd have just a room for Lego and all that comes with it. As it is in this financial climate and Austerity Britain, they're going. Along with some sets on eBay in due course... Hard decision but hey, beggars can't be chosers... M. Quote
Lego Otaku Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 There is one thing you could do before it gets recycled, find out if anyone wants em. Post it in the buy and sale section, offer it for free, person pays for shipping. If no taker after a while, recycle it. The only boxes I'm still keeping are from '70s and '80, the 6991 monorail box being the newest box I kept. Recent boxes are either cut up for display on wall or recycled. Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I'd agree, keep them. You can always flatten them by carefully opening the other flaps:classic: Quote
Donut Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 (edited) Well what ever Cars2 and POTC sets I buy I'm keeping the boxes, with Cars2 you can store the cars in their boxes. That's exactly what I do! I have my LEGOs spread out in old Johnny Thunder and Castle boxes. The boxes from back then are quite sturdy! Edited May 24, 2011 by Donut Quote
