Hi all,

I've just got back into collecting Lego, have purchased a few sets but primarily

picked up a heap of second hand Lego from work collegues recently. My question

is - is there an easy way (whether it be a website or a PC Program) that will

tell me what sets I can make from my current inventory. I have Brickstore installed

with my current inventory but there seems to be no way to easily identify what

sets I can make without manually checking bricklink or Peeron individual set

inventories. Is there some sort of automated tool that can do this for me?

Cheers

I don't know of any. I think this would be rather hard to program anyway, since to do this, the program would have to be able to go through all of the sets you have, figure out from that what all parts you have, and then check through every set ever made (except yours, since obviously you could make those) and check to see if you have the parts to make them. I think there are nearly 10000 sets made so far, and I'd guess each one has an average of say, 100-200 parts, so that could take an hour or two by itself to check. Then it has to compile all the results into a list, which depending on the size of the list, could take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. So it would take a long time to get any results anyway.

Peeron can do this, sort of. It won't list all the sets you could build, but you can ask it if you have the parts needed to build a specific set.

Yeah I'm already in the process of adding my inventory to Peeron. It's not ideal in that I have to mnaually specify individual sets I want to build but it's something. Cheers.

You can also export your file from Brickstore to an XML file and upload it to BASEBRICK. Then you have a sort of Brickstore, but on internet. Then you search for a set you want to try to build, click "Can I build this set" (or MOC, it has some technic MOC invetories) and you can see which prarts you have in the right colour, enough, wrong colour, not enough......

I use this site instead of Peeron, because Basebrick is much faster (and easier  ).

I can do this using excel.

But It would take forever to load ALL the lego's released.

Once that is done it would be pretty easy to check what sets you can build,

or nearly build.

You wouldnt have to click one at a time.

We could even incorporate this into a site where you would upload your stuff,

then it would spit this out, including a say a % of what sets you could build complete,

and the bricks you would need to make those complete.

Maybe when I find time, this could get done.

Definately possible, but a lot of time to load all the bricks from the lego sets released.

Maybe bricklink has that list.

I am new to this site, but not new to collecting Legos. But anyway, I am working on a project like this right now.

I already have the sets, parts, minifigs, and instructions in a database. I am working on the front end right now and the queries to do exactly what it is you are looking for.

I am going to release this as an offline app at first to see how well it works with the Legon population. And quite frankly, it's going to be big, like 2 gigs or so, because of the pics, pdfs, etc.

But the app will also allow you to browse all the instructions for all sets, look at their parts lists, stickers sheets, and minifigs included in that set.

You will be also able to browse the parts list, look at the official lego color chart, and browse all the minifigs (because some came as collectibles and are not included in sets)

It's taken me a while to get to this point, so don't expect anything for the next month or so. But I will keep you guys posted.

I wrote an access database that tells me what I need to build things either in terms of part # or in terms of part # and colour. I haven't cross-referenced part numbers to alternate names or similar parts yet...but it does the job.

I've uploaded into it about 411 kits that I'm interested in with instructions, and images for all the parts. It does the job...but still takes operator intervention as it doesn't look for "close enough" scenarios like you possibly having enough dark gray slope 65's but possibly not enough dark bluish gray slope 65's...or tonnes of log brick 1x2's, but possibly being short on 1x4's.

It's been useful though as I sit with my kids, they look through the kits and we see if we can build what they want, and it pops open the online instructions and parts for me to pull from the bins for us to start building.

I can share the code (it's chunky coding as I wrote it for me, and not for distribution and ease of usage) if someone can tell me the best way to distribute.
