I also buy mainly city sets, however, I do buy sets from themes that can fit into my city. I have a couple Indiana Jones and numerous sets from the Adventurers and there subthemes, even a couple Power Miners. I've thought about the Medieval Market Village and Diagon Alley. Anything with cars, truck, boats, planes, or buildings. :classic:

When I was younger I mainly had Town & Castle sets, Castle was my main theme at the time and at the time of the Black Falcons I had every set apart from one!

Since restarting buying Lego recently my original thought was to extend my Castle collection with the new Kingdoms sets, but since buying the Grand Emporium and Winter Toy Shop I am leaning towards building a City with Trains so we shall see how it goes, it will definately be dependant on funds!!

What percentage of us came out of our dark ages due to Star Wars?

You can add me to that list. I just recently started back, since 1995, when I bought the AT-AT a couple months back.

Themes... I would say I dabble to an extent since most of my purchases seem to fall into one of three buckets - Star Wars (stuff from original trilogy), Modular/City/Creator, and Castle (non-fantasy like).

After more than 20 years of collecting, I never had a dark age, and I have been dabbling in most of the themes the entire time. With some themes such as Castle, there may be an off year or two when the sub-theme of the time has no sets that appeal to me. For other themes such as City and Space, I've collected continuously. In retrospect, I probably never really collected based on the themes themselves (exception - City) but more for particular appealing features of sets: minifigures, architecture/design, color schemes, etc.

I think it's normal to get different themes.

I'm personally a fan of Star Wars and Technic sets. But if a set from another theme looks great (like Queen Anne's Revenge from PotC) then I have to yoink it!

I've stayed fairly true to Town and City throughout my Lego life but dipped into other themes when sets excited me. Pirates, Western, Harry Potter, Bionicle, various Castle, Prince of Persia, Agents and so on. It took me years to realise though that I buy these sets for parts and Bricklink and Ebay serve me better than buying whole sets. Selecting the parts of sets I want and buying those separately, either just the vehicles or minifigs or particular bricks, is much more satisfying. I don't end up with lots of bricks and parts I don't want or don't use this way.

Yes! At first it was just Star Wars that brought me back, then the Agents sets called to me, then Power Miners and what have you I started getting sets from nearly every theme

Space is my primary theme and has been since I started collecting in the late 80's. Even after emerging from my Dark Ages, it was a combination of Space [sPIII] and Star Wars that did it. So I primarily buy Space which atm is me hunting eBay for Mars Mission and SPIII stuff I've missed plus now stocking up on loads of Alien Conquest for a big MOC project I have [invasion Honolulu woo!]

However, like many here, I think sticking to just one theme really limits you to all the other awesome stuff other themes have. I would love to buy more Star Wars, but the price point for alot of the REALLY good sets limits that. I've also started to dabble in Castle again [i do love the new mini-figs/armor] and also have been steadily collecting Ninjago/Atlantis.

I dabble. I just take a look at the latest news, catalogue etc and pick up what takes my fancy. At the moment Lego is really strong in lots of areas, I think: recently I've enjoyed many sets from a wide variety of themes. Atlantis, Ninjago, PoP, Harry Potter, Kingdoms, SW, the late Pirates, and now of course the fantastic PotC line, I really like most of the sets from them all, and it's been a happy dilemma as to what I get. Alien Conquest looks very neat too: cool parts, colours, minifigs and more.

Not to mention the Minifigures.

In my youth, Castle was by far the #1, though I enjoyed Pirates and City fairly well too. I did get occasional Space sets, but they never really held much interest for me for whatever reason -- not enough architecture, I suppose?

Most of the Licensed sets don't have much appeal to me. I suppose the exception would be a few Star Wars and Batman display models; the 7784 Batmobile for example. I'm not sure I'll ever forgive myself for missing out on the 10129 Snowspeeder when it was (reasonably) affordable, but that's another matter. :cry_sad:

In my recent resurgence most of my interest has been toward the City sets (and related Creator sets, like the 5766 Log Cabin). Castle may gain some priority when I haul more of my older MOCs out of storage, but it will be a challenge balancing spending limits against the desire for the bigger structural sets. The only real appeal of the other themes and Licensed categories would be for useful/interesting pieces they contain.

I do theme changes. I really don't care what I have, but if something awesome keeps happening in one theme, I buy everything in that theme that I can afford, and sometimes what I can't afford

I used to be fairly rigid for Star Wars sets and BIONICLE sets, but later on there were other themes that I enjoyed (like Knights Kingdom, Exo-Force at first) so I started to just go ahead and pick what I thought was neat from varying themes. I haven't really bought any sets recently, mostly because I just don't have the extra cash to do so, but I have a feeling I'd likely gravitate towards POTC, Castle and the currently available space-themed sets.

I flit between themes on a monthly basis it seems! Agents brought me back to Lego and moved onto Power miners and sp111. After getting complete sets i started buying serious amounts when ever i could, complete Exo Force sets, many many town sets and then i hit Star Wars in a big way! Castle was next with me buying the entire kingdoms line in one day whilst visiting Legoland Windsor. I buy sets from most themes although at the mo ive slowed right up. If a set comes out that i want i buy it,the theme doesnt really matter as long as i like it! Ive bough PQ stuff for the figs,Atlantis as my son loves it and many more besides.

Things are getting expensive now as ive found an unexpected love for Batman minifigs, how expensive are they???!!!

I don't want to go bankrupt from buying lego, so I do my best to stick to Historic/Fantasy type sets. But I only started late 2009. So some castle 2009 sets. All of the kingdoms and prince of persia sets. I have like 3 2009 pirates sets. And every NinjaGo set except the Skeleton Bowling and Battle Arena since you barely get any minifigures (not including spinners).

But I am tempted to get some Alien Strikers and Defenders to get a small ADU and alien army. At least the aliens could double as Cthulhu like monsters for fantasy castle mocs. Once NinjaGo Wave 2 hits, going to have to make a dent in my wallet.

Yeah, I used to be totally into Bionicle from 2001 up until mid-2008, when they jumped the shark/nuked the fridge/soured the bagel with Wave 2 of that year.

Then I was into Pirates from around the time I joined this forum to the start of my mini-Dark Age.

Now, with the end of my Dark Age, the theme I'm into at the moment is Pharaoh's Quest.

I'm currently saving up for the Scorpion Pyramid and maybe couple of the smaller sets as well.

Definitely dabbling. I look a lot for parts I like and might use, since I don't have many bricks yet. I am into anything with a fantasy/Sci Fi/comic feel to it, so that's pretty much anything apart from City and maybe Technic :D

i buy mainly technic.

but yesterday i have built 6 new castle sets. my younger brother is starting to build with lego too. he is into castle and i am into technic. so normally i would only buy technic and the minifigures series, but i always wanted to build castle themes, so my wallet could face an upcoming storm :)

my collection right now is probably 60% star wars and 40% castle, but because most of the castle has been broken down to make my moc it probably looks more like 80% star wars and 20% castle. i also have the queen anne's revenge set from potc but i bought that more to be part of the castle than anything.

if i had it my way though i'd have a massive castle moc, a big city, and some kind of big starwars scene.

My old love was always making Space MOC's, but since coming out of my dark ages I have been interested in a lot of themes/ideas, like modern architecture and steampunk stuff, post apocalypse, etc. All it takes is an inspiring MOC to turn my head to a different theme.

I have a seven year old son, so I have two Lego lives.

1) Son and Dad. In this life I end up buying and "playing" with almost all the themes at least a little. Star Wars, City, PotC, PoP, Kingdoms, Ninjago etc.

and

2) My own collection. This life is almost 100% focused on the various Castle lines. I say almost because Son has given Dad a few Star Wars sets.

Greetings!

I collect everything concerning "medieval phantasy" (like in Dungeons and Dragons) from different themes, not only Castle. A rock monster from Powerminers is a rock-elemental and the monsters from Atlantis are... monsters again. The great "Portal of Atlantis" is even a fortress (not underwater) that is guarding a portal that leads to a demonic realm. In there, i would use Bionicle minifigures as demons and the action figures as greater demons ("Bosses"). Pirates and Prince of Persia are also welcome as different regions of that world (I just take away the cannons and pistols). I can even use some space plates with craters to build a volcanic environment while the Indiana Jones "Temple of Doom" would be again a subterranean ritual place.

I just have to take away some of the minifigures. I won't use the diving suits from Atlantis or any face with sunglasses or a microphone. But I like to use the sea-minifigures from Atlantis (like the Shark Warrior) as creatures that attacks from the water, they just need some flippers attached to their feet. I also can use the scarred faces from Powerminers, even with those metal implants, those would be persons injured in battle or dark covenants, the robots from "Exoforce" are magical-mechanical golems to aid the Heroes in battle... the 2011 StarWars Advent Calendar will be my first StarWars set, but it will fit as well. Yoda will be a kobold, for example...

Wow, that's pretty impressive the way you incorporate all different themes into your medieval world. Very cool.
