Dreamweb Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 (edited) Hi there. It's a scene from the very controversial and almost universally hated Spider-Man comic book story called One More Day. In this story Peter Parker and Mary Jane make a deal with the demon named Mephisto. They decide to let him erase their marriage from ever happening, in exchange for saving the life of Aunt May, who had been shot. Mephisto changes their past, so that the marriage had never happened. Those are their last moments together as portrayed in the comic. To read more about the One More Day story, check out this Wikipedia article. As mentioned, it was hated by most fans, as it basically erased 20 years of comics that showed Peter and MJ married. All the Spider-Man comics from that point until today have been affected by that continuity change. In the new continuity, Peter is a bachelor again. And now the overall view of the MOC. It's pretty simple really, but I just felt like doing it. I'm not giving any opinions on the story itself, I just thought it would be a fun build. And here's a page from the actual comic added for comparison (click to enlarge): Hope you enjoyed it! Comments are welcome! Edited April 18, 2011 by Dreamweb Quote
Gregorovich Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 There's not much in it, but the flames are fantastic! Are they glued together? I've never read the comic myself, so thanks for explaining what it's about. Well done! Quote
Brickdoctor Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 There's not much in it, but the flames are fantastic! Are they glued together? They're connected by putting the peg on the base of the flame into a slot on the flame. The newer flames lack these pegs, though, so you have to use the older ones. Quote
Oky Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Ah yes, the good old make-it-undone-so-we-can-keep-making-money-by-writing-the-same-old-stories routine. I don't read comics, so I don't know this story, but you did a good job of representing it, even if it's just three figs and some flames. It would be nice if you could provide a reference pic. MJ looks kinda ugly with that Spalko head, but I know that a sad female face is hard to come by, especially among fleshies. Spidey's smug grin isn't very fitting either, but oh well. Quote
Dreamweb Posted April 18, 2011 Author Posted April 18, 2011 Here's a reference picture from the actual comic. I hope that's not a violation of copyright issues or anything, as it's just one page. I shall add it to the first post as well. I wanted to use the sad female face so I took that one. Besides, I guess no one looks pretty when they're crying. About Peter - he was actually trying to be comforting at times so that kinda explains the face. I was considering yellow heads but I chose fleshies as they are more true to the comic. Thanks for your comments! Quote
lightningtiger Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Interesting vig there 'Dreamweb', flames are excellent and so is the devil himself ! Though the female needs a more female torso, do you have plans of creating more of these kind of vig's for Spider-Man ? Anyway, good work and Brick On 'Dreamweb' ! Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Very nice rendition of this comic book scene Dreamweb! I understand the plainness of the background, because it's supposed to be that way and the main highlight are the characters, and of course the circling flames is very true to the scene. Well done! Dreamweb Posted April 19, 2011 Author Posted April 19, 2011 Thanks for the comments! Yes, the background is plain black as it was in the comic - I think it was meant to represent the 'unreal' feeling of that scene - they're in no particular place, they're going 'into the void' of sorts. I've actually been thinking about making more Spidey vigs - I like the comics a lot, I didn't like Sam Raimi's movies that much - they were OK, not great, not completely bad, but at least they gave us the LEGO sets. The whole One More Day story was highly controversial, but oh well, Marvel did it so we have to live with it. Quote
Ceroknight Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 It looks fantastic...I never knew marvel had all of these things I got confused really fast looking at the wikipedia pages... Anyways good job once again Quote
Dreamweb Posted April 20, 2011 Author Posted April 20, 2011 That's true, some people compare Marvel comics to soap opera and it's a good comparison actually. Characters getting married, divorced, people thought to be dead who come back alive years later, characters having children they are not aware of... This can get confusing at times. Quote
def Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 I used to be quite a Marvel Zombie, though these days I simply keep tabs on the company... What I loved about it is long dead, though other interesting things have popped up instead (the Brubaker Deathof Cap was the last big book I picked up) in regards to this MOC, it looks nice, for sure, but the first thing I thought was "that's not Mephisto." the hair is one thing, but the pupils in the eyes really change the vibe for me. So, I can praise the Spidey, MJ, flames, and background, the Mephisto loses me. I was a Marvel Zombie Quote
IAmWillGibson Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 I love that Mary Jane's expression is, like "What sorta dummy would think this is a good idea?" Quote
Joebot Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 I love that Mary Jane's expression is, like "What sorta dummy would think this is a good idea?" Her expression perfectly mirrors the expression of every Spider Man fan when they read this story. I never understood why Joe Quesada and the other senior editors at Marvel felt they couldn't write exciting, compelling stories with a married Peter Parker. They've been doing it just fine for 20+ years! Ugh. Anyway, I love this MOC, but even more than that, I love the basic idea of rendering classic comic book scenes as Lego vignettes. I hope you do some more, Dreamweb!! Quote
Dreamweb Posted April 22, 2011 Author Posted April 22, 2011 I believe and hope this may still be undone. They undid the stupid Peter-Parker-being-his-own-clone thing once, so it's possible that they undo One More Day. Unfortunately, the guys at Marvel tend to make their comics somewhat similar to the movies, obviously to attract the movie audience and make them buy the books. It's stupid as it's the movies that are based on the comics and not the other way round, but they do it anyway. I mean - X-Men's costumes were black in the movies and they made them black in the comics afterwards. Same with Spider-Man's web-shooters - he didn't use them in Sam Raimi's movies so they removed them from the comic (only to return them after One More Day, but that's a different story). And in the new Spider-Man movie currently in production not only will Peter be single, but they say MJ will be totally absent. So that's bad news. Joe Quesada in no longer editor-in-chief, although he's still chief creative officer or something like that. So that's bad news too. Although I must say this - the One More Day story itself was a good read, but the impact it had on Spider-Man was so bad. If it were some kind of alternate-reality thing, or even a dream sequence, I'd actually call it a cool story! In short: the story - good, the way it was used to mess up with eveything we knew - not good at all. Thanks for your comments! I think I'll try to make some more comic-based MOCs in the near future.
