As the wedding of Prince William and kate Middleton draws closer, i have decided to build a frigate in pride of the UK. I must first also say that this is my first ever attempt at a ship and is not complete yet, any tips and help is welcome as i think i need it, but here it is.. HMS Royal.

Not bad for the first attempt! So let's give you your feedback.

The upper stern, even it looks great is to big for a frigate, something like that is more accurate and wouldn't be in the way of the Mizzen Sail... but it has a nice design!

Since you want to build a frigate you should change the positioning of the masts, simelar to this. They are all to much forward and the space between seems to be a bit wrong. The space between Main Mast and Fore Mast should be 1,5 the size of the space between Mizzen Mast and Main Mast. Place the Wheel before the Mizzen Mast.

The length of the masts looks ok, but The Main Topgallant Mast should be thinner, too.

The figurehead looks nice! What kind of rigging dou you like to add, "string-clouds" or the lego ones?

The headrails'll be one of the toughest parts to do (allways for me), good look with that, too.

A lot of help, how to build lovely frigate can be found here, too. Captain Green Hair's tutorial is a must read, in my opinion!

The Vesta and Achille are great frigates, too. You should check them out as well, for inspiration, scale & proportion. There are a lot more great frigates in the libary, too.

Hope I could help you. Nice work so far.

Thank you so much Aalak, i must agrree with you on the masts, i had no idea how to do them, but that picture has made it alot more clearer. I will make the stern alot more smaller (if you are poitnig out the hight of the back). Also im not to sure what a Main Topgallant is? i think im going to go with String clouds (if thats how the Admiral did it on Vesta) and i got alot of insperation from the Vesta, helped me alot  But thank you for the comment and all the help! :pir-sweet:

As I started the Ares, I knew as much about ships and masts as you, since than I learned a lot by understanding the feedback from Admiral Croissant and Perfectionist, as well as read a lot on wikipedia or the homepage of the HMS Trincomalee. There are great Sailplans and informations about the single parts of the mast and yard system. the Main Top Gallant is the uppest part of the middle mast ;). Normally there are three parts on a mast of a frigate, from the deck to the top they are named mast, topmast topgallantmast :pir-sweet:.

Good look with the noting of the clouds, I personally quite on that after some atempts und glued the cross strings on it, but that's the easy way out :pir-blush:

well I have to say it looks good already,

I also agree with Aalak he has given you some great advice ;)

but I thought the bell was mostly situated on the aft side of the forecastle .

Thank you, i think i may take your advice and do some research on the HMS Trincomalee, and i will make a try at this clouds thing :pir-classic:

Aalak has given you some great advice already. He has definitely learned a lot lately :pir-classic:

I agree that the captain's cabin looks to high, but if you make it lower, it may become too low for a minifig to stand inside.

You could also make the rest of the ship a bit higher (if that's not too much work for you) so that you can also make the yellow line less edgy in the front.

Bart is right about the bell, but the design is very good. Clever to use a telescope there.

In the future you could also place tiles on the studded downside of the gunports.

Guess that's enough advice for now. Good luck!

Why thank you Admiral, i will defenatly sort the cabin out, erm the thing is this ship is what you would call a low budget? meaning i only just about made this ship with the peices i have :pir-sceptic: but i will be ordering alot of brown plates to cover the whole deck :pir-classic: and i will be covering up the gun ports once i have some 'Flags' delivered  thank you again, your ship helped be alot! :pir-laugh:

New Front,

dsci0031.jpg

I have moved the Bell down,

dsci0027.jpg

The Stern of the ship was the most trickest part to do, but this is my new attempt.

(Back is incomplete)

But i will be changing this particular part because it just dosen't look right :pir-sceptic:

Nice updates... but you need to hurry, only 8 days left till the wedding :pir_laugh2:

The Space between the masts still look identical. I would move the Main Mast (the one in the middle) at least 4 studs to the stern...

As for the stern, I guesst it's the color first and formost, secondly it's a bit empty, you could try something like the Achille from Perfectionist. It's quite an amazing stern.

Vesta's Stern is quite amzaing, too.

Captain Green Hairs Build a Frigate Stern is quite amzing, and you can finde a how to build there as well

Ore something simpler like I used on my Caribbean Queen. The cheese korners are white now, it looks better :pir-laugh:

As for the poop-deck (above the cabin) ... you could add a fake skylight there as well. or a real one if you like.

skylight.jpg

But overall, nice work, keep brigging...

Edit: Changed the pics to links, before the Admiral sees it :pir-wink:

Aalak has told you enough about the stern, so I can only add a small suggestion for improvement on the headrails.

Many MOC'ers find that a very hard part to do, so it's no problem if it isn't perfect yet.

I think a good reference picture is this one.

So the headrails are running in a curve from the figurehead to the catheads and the forecastle.

On your ship, I would remove the extra bow section just below the figurehead, and change the headrails a little.

More like this:

But then perhaps it looks even better if you would make the headrails a little shorter on the front and lower the figurehead a little bit.

Just a suggestion though, you decide what to do with it :pir-classic: Good luck anyway!

I shall move that middle mast, and i agree the stern is very boring and i will get to work on detailing it more :pir-classic: Thanks!

Thank you Admiral, i will most certainly remove that extra bow, and will re-adjust the rail,

That telescope bell is super clever

It seems to me that the sides of the ship are a bit low; wouldn't it be fairly easy to fall off in rough seas?

Other than that, I'm liking your deck

Thanks!

Do you mean water would come through the gun ports?

and thanks, il have new pics soon of the deck (: :pir-classic:
