First some pictures...... I must say one thing......IT'S SMEGGING CRAZY ! KIDS ! Now I have settled down after that outburst, I will try and open a fresh topic on the 520 Steam Ranger I have photographed. Hopefully in the next 24 hours or sooner ! Honestly I have to tell you I'm not impressed, because it's mostly a selection of official Lego sets displayed, and not even with at least a significant arrangement. They're just gathered up on a table... BUT Those custom shops and the custom locomotive are very nice. Especially the tyre shop is really great! (here it can't be seen but I've checked its own thread before) So why don't you try to bring only MOCs to this kind of exhibition? The photos were taken an hour before posting here on EB, in the end 90% of New Mannum was safe, but half of the rest of the display yeah well I have a lot of rebuilding to do. The only thing I've seen come close was a large-scale model that included about three feet of flat terrain at the front. Quote

It happened about 4 times that I saw the caboose on the long cargo train in front of the engine. My explanation was that somehow children are drawn to the caboose and just can't help touch it. It then decouples, and when the train goes around the loop, the caboose ends up in front of the engine. Not sure if my explanation was correct because I didn't actually see them grab the caboose, but I don't know how else to explain how the caboose kept coming off (this happened only on the outside loop, not on the inside loops). To get the caboose back where it's supposed to be, I'd simply back up the train the whole loop (that would take a while because the track was quite long). About MOC's, if it is specifically a lego show, then you should have MOC's, because your fellow lego fans have already seen the standard lego sets. But our local train show is not a lego show, practically none of the visitors knows which ones are MOC's and which ones are sets (most didn't even know that lego sells trains). Actually, it's nice to point at the Emerald Night (and this year, the Maersk train) and tell them that they can buy this one right now. Logistics is a big difficulty for a train show. How to get everything from A to B, how to set up everything on time (there is a limited amount of setup time), etc, this was not easy. In fact, I did not actually manage to set up everything on time, so I ended up with roads that had no vehicles on it, houses that were still sitting in the box, etc. You can see some footage of my 2010 show at (turn of the sound, the neighboring layout was producing "music" fit for a horror movie). At the end of that clip, you can see a kid trying to grab the engine (he would have gotten it if his parents hadn't been so quick). I've done this 2 years in a row now, and haven't lost a single lego piece. In the first year, in 2009, my Santa Fe locomotive crashed on the floor when I made a mistake with one of the switches. Some of the pieces went 15 feet away, but people brought all the pieces back to me so it's still 100% complete. Still, as a precaution I now run the faster trains on the inner loops, and the slower cargo trains on the outside loop. To the original poster: if the kids liked it, then you did a good job! My train club likes to have as much custom stuff as possible but it is a huge workload for an individual (even for a club) which can take some time to put together. We also like to be able to show the current trains which you can buy from LEGO, because so many people are interested. Our club tries to share the workload of manning the display so we all get a bit of a break when we need it. Just a few questions ... How many bricks?, how much did it cost?, how long did it take?, that's not LEGO track is it?, what glue do you use? Where did you buy them? Now repeat every two minutes for two or three days and you can create the train show experience in you own home Quote

Another thing the constant questions about Lego trains, I feel Lego should do more promotion in this area......I wonder if Toy Corner, etc., will get any extra sales this week as the result of the train show eh ? That is true for my 2-1/2 yearvold daughter as well. No interest in the powered Duplo train but will push engines and cars all day. I play with the powered engine and she walks over and removes it from the tracks. :) Quote

I play with the powered engine and she walks over and removes it from the tracks. :) I noticed that the kids liked having control over the train personally, and got upset they could play with the 'xw falc's 520 and my Emerald Night....they went straight in to my car to save them from them ! Like everyone said, running one of these shows is quite the experience with the kids and constant questions from both the kids and parents. Its like when I first joined up with NILTC, I had no idea what I was getting myself into, boy is it fun. Once you get used to a few shows, it should get better and better in the long run as you think of new ways to prevent people from touching the display, to be better prepared for the logistics of it all. He grabs all the train cars off the layout and lays them on the floor. He makes long neat rows then lays next to them staring. He also loves to put minifigs on the tops as passengers. LOL Quote

CarrollFilms Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 Great layout, but one thing I have learned from my train layouts, kids loved touching my displays, since then i put some thought into buying plexy glass so their slimy germ hands don't scuddle my beautiful trains off the track and land on that hard rock ground. Just saying get something so the kids don't touch!! Keep up the great work!!! Quote

Not only it had conventional model trains, but a Lego exhibit featuring a MOC of a SAR locomotive, (made with painted elements! ), and a few of LightningTiger's New Mannum models too!
