dunamis Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 I was at the Glendal, Ca LEGO store today and they had a big clearance table set up with the following: Mobile Crane (8421) was $149 now $99 Forklift (8416) was $69 now $49 They had some bionicle and some Belville stuff on sale too (but I just glanced at it so I couldn't tell you what it was.) They also had some Bionicle DVDs on sale too. FYI, they did have the UCS AT-ST, Technic Crawler Crane and Technic Dune Buggy there as well.
gylman Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 It seems that 8421 did not sell al that well. All over eBay it rarely sells for over $120 which is significatntly below original retail. Its a great, but very expensive, parts pack. Too bad - I hope Lego does not take it as a sign that large technic constructions are not commercially viable. Truth is that model was big, but did relatively little. We need smaller, but more complex, models.

Truth is that model was big, but did relatively little. We need smaller, but more complex, models. I just finished 8421 the other day. It really looks good, I think, but as you already mentioned on LUGNET once it does pretty little. I was "prepared" for that - I thought. Cos I didn't expect that little function. Although I must say I like the mechanism in the crane arm where you can switch between the thread up/down and the arm extending. Those were new parts to me. Overall it's a very expensive set for what it does (fortunately I got it on sale). I hope this year's sets make up for that :-)
dunamis Posted July 6, 2006 Author Posted July 6, 2006 Presumably, they were clearing shelf space for the new tow truck (replacing the crane as the big Technic set) and the crawler crane replaces the forklift. I'm guessing the 8421 crane didn't do that well because (in addition to what you stated) it was the third version of a mobile crane. I really like the Technic line, but I hope the start making other things besides multiple iterations of cranes and trucks (space shuttle anyone?)
