Enpaz Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Hi guys, I just have to ask you: what do you think of the Emerald Night? I have never owned a single Lego train set in my life and also have never really felt the urge to get one, but somehow the Emerald Night is appealing. I feel like this train is kind of one-of-a-kind, and something like it won't come up again very soon. If that's the case I'd probably regret not buying it. Please understand. I actually really don't want to dish out 90 euros at the moment but at the same time, I wouldn't want to taste the bitter flavour of regret in the near future, too. Kept simply: is the 10194 Emerald Night really a goddamn holy cow this is AWESOME frickin' sh** w0000t Lego set that I should in no way pass out on? Or is it not that big of a deal? Thanks. Quote
MetroiD Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 If that's the case I'd probably regret not buying it. I can't imagine anyone not regretting having had the opportuniy to get the Emerald Night and having missed out on it. I know that the price is steep, especially when you consider all the PF you'd need in order to power it. But: Kept simply: is the 10194 Emerald Night really a goddamn holy cow this is AWESOME frickin' sh** w0000t Lego set that I should in no way pass out on? Yes. Then again - it depends whether you actually have / are planning to get rails / train station, etc., because otherwise it's half the fun. Not to mention all the PF. It also depends on what kind of trains you like, of course, but while diesel and electric LEGO trains are common, a full-spec LEGO steamer is something you wouldn't see too often lately. If I had to choose between the EN and the Maersk Train, I'd definitely buy the EN again. Quote
Rufus Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 I'd advise you to get the Emerald Night. This set is an instant classic, and you're sure to regret if you don't, even if you're not really into trains. She's an absolute beauty Quote
RockeTeK Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 I'd advise you to get the Emerald Night. This set is an instant classic, and you're sure to regret if you don't, even if you're not really into trains. She's an absolute beauty I couldn't agree more! I have recently ordered the set at Lego S@H, and it is worth it! (I already have most of the PF stuff, only had to order the RC controller) Quote
unbornchikken Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 (edited) I've had this one on my wishlist as well for awhile, despite not wanting at all to get into trains (slippery slope ), if only for the amount of dark green you get in the set. Edited April 9, 2011 by unbornchikken Quote
Pingles Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Mine arrived yesterday. :) But I haven't opened it. I work weekends so the box is there to taunt me until Monday. Quote
henryhotspurs Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 While all Lego sets are fun, there are Lego sets that are "must haves". The Emerald Night ranks right up there with Black Seas Barracuda, Galaxy Explorer, Yellow Castle and the Metroliner. Trust me, you will regret not owning at least one iconic Emerald Night. Quote
Enpaz Posted April 9, 2011 Author Posted April 9, 2011 So you would say it's better than the Maersk ship?´ Thanks for your replies, guys. Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 I'd definitely get one. Especially because, like you said, this one appeals to you. You're probably right when you stated it might not come again for awhile... if ever. The Maersk is pretty much its replacement. Besides even if you are not totally satisfied with it, put it away for a while and then sell it. There is, more than likely, a bunch of people trying to get there hands on it long after it has been discontinued. Just look a t the retired modulars. They go for 2, 3, and 4 times their retail. mrblue Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 to make it short: star wars sets took me out of my dark ages and the emerald night brought back my passion for trains... go buy it! you'll not regret! have a nice lego day mrBlue Quote
L@go Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 To answer your question: Yes. Without a doubt. But be aware that it could spark a need that can be quite expensive to fuel. I didn't own a single train before I got the EN. Now I've got... lots. Sitting on the table right in front of me, half-built, is another EN in an alternative colour. It's gorgeous. I'd choose it over a Maersk ship any day. Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 I wouldn't want to taste the bitter flavour of regret in the near future, too. You (absolutely ) have to buy this set. That large lego wheels are unique and that moving piston rods are fantastic. If you can you must complete the set with a second wagon Quote
gifinim Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 If I had the money I'd buy one tomorrow. It's one of those sets that will always hold their value as well, so if you do get bored with it in the future you won't lose too much money by selling it on. Quote
nfl_solo Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 The Emerald Night is my first Lego train purchase aside form the original monorail. I absolutely love the Emerald Night. I have always loved trains, and regret not buying trains earlier especially the Sante Fe and BNSF when I would see them on the shelf at Toys R Us. I didn't want to make the same mistake twice so I bought the Emerald Night shortly after it was released. This started my love of Lego trains and I have bought another Emerald Night recently as I feel it will be discontinued soon. I have also bought the 7939 Cargo train, two 7597 Toy Story trains and two Maersk trains. I plan on picking up the 7938 Passenger train as well as the new 3677 Red Cargo train when it is released. Ralph_S Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 I'm no train lover myself, but I did buy one and it is one of the few sets in the last few years that I actually built rather than parting it out straight away. It is very pretty and looks good just as a display piece. It also has a very nice parts selection -even if you're not interested in the train bits- which is the main reason why I bought it. I recently even put some of the train bits to good use! Cheers, Ralph Quote
Pingles Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 After I built mine I displayed it in a case in our living room where it got a lot of comments. It is a beautiful piece of work. Most folks can't believe it's Lego. Quote
medib Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 A definite must have. Better than the Maersk ship? Yes. Better than the Maersk train? That answer isnt as easily answered.... Quote
Andy Glascott Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 I'm a very keen train fan, but possibly a lone voice here, I'm not fussed about it..... It's a very impressive set, I'd be happy to own one, but I'm not going out of my way to buy it. I just don't think it would fit with my collection of 6 wide sets and MOCs. Ultimately, I'd rather spend my £70 or so that it would cost on parts to create another MOC or enhance my layout. I'm working towards all my trains being models of real life (current or past) trains. Though if someone bought it for me as a gift, well that's a different story! (Sadly my wife doesn't read this forum....) I'm ready for the chorus of boos! Andy Quote

Andy Well, you're obviously a train enthusiast, so perhaps the question wasn't really directed at you Still, perhaps you and I have something in common. I don't have it sitting assembled on a shelf, although I did for about two months, after which all of it went into the parts bin. I'm pretty sure I've already used most of the parts on MOCs -including on my first train MOC in about two decades, which coincidentally is a model of a real train. I didn't bend over backwards either; I got it at a discount Cheers, Ralph Quote
peterab Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 I'm somewhat in agreement with Andy Glascot and Ralf, though I've bought two for parts. I do think it's an iconic step in the history of Lego trains though, and it will become a classic of the order of the Metroliner or Santa Fe Super Chief. As a parts pack it's great, with unique wheels, windows and a host of dark green parts. I think for a train head it's not the greatest model, as it has had running difficulties (they've been overcome by many mods to the drive train), and the many customizations reflect the fact that it doesn't portray any particular prototype perfectly (though it does closely resemble a couple). For the set collector, or those who like to display official sets, it is a distinctive and beautiful set, and an interesting build. Quote
Duke Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 What have I done... I decided to buy an Emerald Night whilst they were still available, thinking i'd regret it if I didn't buy one. Just built the Engine and Tender for now and it's just a thing of beauty. I feel like all my other sets pale in comparison and now I feel the need to buy track, power functions and possibly more Emerald Nights Highly recommended, but with a caution warning for addiction. Vindicare Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 I would recommend getting this. I have it, and it's the one and only train I bought. I'm not much of a train guy, but I'm also looking into getting the Maersk and new red freight train. The EN is a pretty cool train, but the minifigs are a bit passé... Quote
