Jareth Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Hi! I just wanted to say thank you for making trees with brown trunks. This year there are 3 1/2 sets like this across four themes. 4865 Forbidden Forest, 7956 Ewok Attack and 7188 King's Carriage Ambush are all appealing to me because of the good looking trees. Oh, Cannibal Escape looks like a good tree building set even if it doesn't have leaves, so I am counting it as 1/2 a tree set. Anyway, I really like this set and I hope this becomes a trend. We need a forest for our forestmen, elves and lumberjacks! Quote

We need a forest for our forestmen, elves and lumberjacks! I'm really glad you like them, Jareth. I actually strongly dislike them and they put me off sets. I'm hoping one of the creative geniuses at Lego comes up with a design I like more (but perhaps I'm in the minority and most people like the current style). The issue for me is the green plastic they use for leaves, it just looks barren and not leaf-like, as well as the size of the pieces used to make the trunks (but I have a love of 1x2 and 1x1 bricks) Quote
jonwil Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 There is also a tree in the Creator log cabin set Quote

I like the leaf piece for two reasons. First they were released when I was a kid and so they have nostalgic value. Secondly, I think lego is supposed to be blocky. Overly realistic/detailed parts often only have one use and can sometimes stop looking like lego. Now that being said, the leaf piece is only available in green and dark green. If it was in other colors it would be more useful. Red, yellow and brown for fall leaves, white for winter, light blue for tron style circuitry. I am sure there are other uses for this part, but every time I try it looks like leaves. Quote
Commander Laquiet Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 I'm with you, Jareth. I think the new trees look great. Lots of great pieces, basically. The Ewok Attack tree looks a treat - an abundance of dark brown, regular brown, dark tan and a smattering of green, as well as the dark green leaves. I also agree about the King's Carriage looking good. I have been looking for an excuse to buy this set when it appears on the shelves, and I think I've just found it. I can also understand why you wouldn't like the leaves, hewman, but I do. I think that, with specialized pieces like leaves, it becomes purely personal preference that determines whether or not the said piece agrees with you. Quote

Technically, the larger leaf piece today tends to show up in three colors: bright green, regular green (officially called Dark Green), and dark green (officially called Earth Green). But I agree, it would be nice to see it in more diverse colors. Those styles of leaf pieces are some of my favorites since they can make diversely-shaped trees and plants, as opposed to the carefully-sculpted shapes of the one-piece evergreens, fruit trees, and cypress trees. I don't build many MOCs that require trees, of course-- I mostly build vehicles and occasionally buildings, rarely making a full scene with lush background details-- but I definitely appreciate the design opportunities the LEGO leaf pieces offer. CopMike Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Yes, it´s a great piece and it´s good that it makes a comeback ! I like it a lot, especially when you can have some crazy colors like we used last year at Brickworld : Quote
Outer Rim Trading Co. Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 I do miss all the tree varieties from the 80's. They may have been 1 big piece of all-green plastic but at least they were available... Quote
