Dear Experts

I am posting a lot of snapshots (computers and softwares related images) to forums

I just want to find out :

1- What is the best extension for a saved snapshot (computers and softwares related images) before uploading it to tinypic or imageshack

2- What is the proper size in pixel for an image before uploading to tinypic or imageshack ? because some time when I upload an image it is too big for the forum's .

3- Is there an official uploader utility for tinypic ? when I googled I could not find a proper one to be used

Thanks

If by 'best' you mean quality and universality, I'd go with .png.

EB's limit is 800x600.

Can't answer your third question, unfortunately.

I can't really provide an answer on whether tinypic or imageshack is better - I used photobucket back in the day, nowadays predominantly Flickr. With the latter there is always the trouble of having to delete older / irrelevant pics once you start reaching the Pro limit (300 MB monthly, if memory serves), but then again, if you really use image hosting that much and insist on quality, upgrading to Pro probably is something you'd consider. The main reason I like Flickr is because it lets you upload the pic in its original size and then choose which resolution to deeplink it in, while not having to sacrifice any hi-res details.

Hi MetroiD

You do not need to provide an answer which one is better because I had not asked this question from the first place.

My question is what is the best extension to upload to those two free image hosting.

Thanks

Well I guess I misunderstood the "tinypic or imageshack" part of the topic's name then. In any case, compression/quality-wise, it'd obviously be .jpg, as Brickdoctor suggested.

Well, I hate to sound like a jerk, but then it's not a good question.

Maybe you want to know what is the best file format.

But even if you rephrased the question to ask for file format, you have to specify what you mean by best. Smallest size? Best picture quality?

Okay let us rephrase the question what would be one of a popular file format that can be used to upload a snpashot to an image hosting ?

Smallest size? Best picture quality?

In term of size and quality because obviously when I upload a snapshot to a forum I need that image to be in reasonable size (because there is limitation when you upload to tiny pic or imageshack) and has good qulaity to any one who is ready my thread

Technically, IMO, png is a better format... but jpeg is more widely supported. Since (if you're using decent software) you can adjust compression levels, the best thing to do is save in both formats with several compression levels and choose the best one.

But honestly, jpeg is probably easiest and, unless you set the compression WAY too high, the quality will be very good.

If you edit and re-edit pictures, save in a lossless format first and only export to jpeg or compressed png for uploading.

I'm sorry, apparently it's not my best day. In any case, there's a multitude of websites where you could find detailed information on compression and comparisons between the most popular file formats, such as this one for example.

Extension and format are somewhat interchangeable with a Windows OS (in my experience, the computer will refer to "extension" when you seek to open a file.docx or .bmp etc. Messages like "Windows cannot open this file extension" turn up if and when you try and open .docx on Word 2003.) so mixing format and extension is easy.

.JPEG is the best to use most of the time, it opens in a lot more programmes and takes up less space.

That's because Windows is an epic fail w.r.t. file-types (earlier MacOS was even worse... I don't know how it is now). Most file types have what's called a "magic number" embedded at the beginning of the data that should tell the OS exactly what kind of file it is (certainly both jpeg and png do). The reason is quite simple... if you have file.jpg and simply rename it file.png, the file is still a jpeg file and, depending on the application, Windows could fail to use the correct program to open it.

The extension is something for humans as a commonly accepted nomenclature, it was never meant for the OS to rely on it. I could rename it "file.xls" and surely would't expect Excel to open it.

Now, I know you probably all realize all of this, but it's one of those things that people should not confuse.

jpg is best for real photographs, as that's what it is optimised for. png is best for images from digital lego apps like LDD and MLCad, as it will compress better and not blur smooth edges.

For screen shots of computer programs and such: png

For screen shots of things looking like photos: jpg

I usually don't go bigger than 750 px on the width.

(and I absolutely hate the GUI on Flickr so I try to stay as far away as I can - which is kinda hard since most AFOL's put their photos there. I prefer Picasa myself.)
