I went to TRU to find some 1:24 scale model cars (my other hobby) when i decided to check out the lego section. what did i see? the new green monster that lego calls a dune buggy. I wasn't to thrilled about the dune buggy, but i flipped the box over, and saw they had building instructions for the tractor that was seen first eariler in the year. It was thought that the US would get the dun buggy, and the rest of the world would get the tractor, and both would use the same part number. well now we know that you can build either with the same set. Snagged it up for $59.00. haven't even opened it up yet.

5150 Lego,

Tks so much for the precision !! I might get it for the Buggy which looks really nice !! I hope you will do some reviews of the models ;-)

I shall move this to the BSTF ;-)

No problem yoda! Ya, i'm building the tractor as we speak, so i'll be getting a review up later this week! So far its a nice build!

I'm 1/2 done with the dune buggy. I didn't have time to finish it last night, though I peeked ahead in the instructions.

One pleasant surprise about this set is that it came with a technic driving ring! Woooo!

However, one disappointment is that it's not even used in the main Buggy model; only in the alternate tractor. Hah!

This is one of the strangest sets I've ever seen. Most of the time the alternate is a subset of the main set, and is less detailed and uses less pieces... but for this one, there's a lot of pieces that aren't shared between the two sets at all. Weird!

On a positive note: I'm really glad Lego has started going back to the old school, and including extra instructions to add a motor to the set :)

That brings me back...

That's mainly because the tractor is the main model in Europe, so they wanted both to look good, I assume. LEGO have decided, for whatever reason, that the dune buggy would sell better in the US.

Wow, thanks for the heads up. I'm going to try to pick this one up in the next day or so. How many pieces are in the box?

800+ pieces (I think 816? I can't remember at the moment).

I finished the dune buggy last night, and I'm a bit disappointed. There's easily 150+ leftover pieces that weren't used in it, and the model overall seems to be lacking.

It's got an interesting "extend" feature, where the buggy extends from 12" to 14" using a screw gear, but it doesn't really add anything, as the shortened version is kind of weird.

As far as technically, it's got nothing interesting either; just a simple 2x2 180 degree engine, a differential, the extending part, and the hand-of-god steering again. Overall, the buggy lacks "soul", and after constructing it, I'm absolutely certain that it was meant to be the alternate model.

I'll be taking it apart sometime in the next week (that's gotta be a record for me, heh, I usually leave things built for at least 6 months) and rebuilding it as the tractor, which looks far more technically interesting, though I hate the colors.

Finished the tractor a couple days ago. I have to say i'm pretty impressed. Not the most featrues in a techinc set, but what it does it does very well. Tilt axle in the front, steering, and a very nice grass cutter atachment in the rear whitch can be raised and lower. It is conected to the drive wheels, and spins as the tractor moves forward. It also has a reaaly nice feature where you can disconect the blades from the drive wheels via a transmission catchover. I'm going to take pics tonight, and attempt my first review by the end of the week. Bear with me!

I've got one question:

I'd like to buy this set in the US on my next visit (you know, same old price difference thing). And because I am picky and only interested in the Tractor model I'd like to have a box with the Tractor pictured as the main model.

Now I found this picture on brickshelf and am a bit confused:

Anybody having bought this set, could you be so kind and shed some light on which model is pictured as main model? Read: are there two different boxes for the US and Europe or just one for both?

Thx for any pointers :-)

I went to check on both SAH US and France and they do have different boxes ;-)

The US box art shows the buggy as main model whereas the European box art shows the tractor as main model !!

Hope that helped !!

So Hobbes you have a choice between paying a lot less and have the buggy box, or pay full price for the tractor box :-D ;-)

I checked the S@H pix, too, but I wasn't satisfied ;-)

The question is: do the pictures really show the front side? The US version shows a very detailed description on the left side (set number, name, number of pieces, etc., see the pic I posted). The European version just shows the set number and is very scarce with "information" about the set which made me wonder if it might be the back side (see here). Hence my question. I don't know if that difference is common between US and European boxes...

Thx for your help, though ;-)

I fear so... :'-(
