Brick Tamland Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Fooled around with making a brick built hull, possibly for a pirate ship, although I think the scale might be too small to be appropriate for this theme. I have no idea what to do with the topside, so feel free to throw out some ideas. The bow is a bit chunky in a few sections, but the half plate offset made it difficult to get smooth curves all around. The Fibonacci sequence is present in several portions of the model to attain some curvature. I may redo the bottom portion of the hull with smooth tiles at some point, but I'm not sure its worthwhile for the amount of time it would take. Quote
Admiral Croissant Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Most of this hull is quite good to build a ship on. I like the technique you used. I think it would suit quite well on a galleon, but on almost any ship of the pirate-era, the shape of the stern isn't as flat as yours below water level. So the part where the rudder is attached to should be more curved, like this for example: Good luck! Quote
Brick Tamland Posted March 5, 2011 Author Posted March 5, 2011 Technique is quite successful! Your technique was my inspiration. Can't wait to see that hull completely finished, its a beauty. Quote
Brick Tamland Posted March 5, 2011 Author Posted March 5, 2011 Did some more work on this based on the frigate tutorial. Quote
Admiral Croissant Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Looks good. I like the shape and colours. Some small things you could change: -Make the rudder white -Make the bow more like this (CGH's frigate): So the figurehead almost reaches the main deck level and the bowsprit is pointing upwards instead of being horizontal. And finally you could remove the not-sloped part just above the stern, and make the black line run all across the ship (right now it gets interrupted by one brown sloped brick. Outside of that it's a very nice ship and I'd love to see it made IRL. Good luck! Quote
Brick Tamland Posted March 8, 2011 Author Posted March 8, 2011 So I completed most of the ship, but I'm not really that happy with the overall shape. The front to back curve doesn't really fit well with the other dimensions so I'm retiring this model. I've started on a much larger LDD ship project that will be planned and modeled after a real ship from the start, so the final results should look much better. Here are the final shots of this one. Heres a teaser shot of the new ship. Quote
Admiral Croissant Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 The bow is indeed a bit strange but outside of that it's a very nice ship. Certainly for an LDD creation. I especially like the stern. The tan details fit very well there. The teaser of the new ship is nice too, you're using good techniques. I would only suggest to give it another small curve inwards as you can see here: As you can see there's a small curve inwards around the middle gundeck. Good luck! Quote
Admiral of the Red Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 It's really not a bad looking ship at all, Tamland. The curve of the hull might need to be drawn out longer, but all in all I really like it! Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 You've maneged to get quite a good result for a first attempt! I agree with some of the others, the bow is a bit stretched, but I really like the colourscheme and details. I'm looking forward to your next, the teaser looks great! If you haven't done so already, I reccomend you read some books and look at pictures and plans. It might be easyer to base it on a real ship with real plans. ;-) Quote
