Dr. Steve Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 I am planning to build a MOC based on the cartoon "The Mysterious Cities of Gold" I am going to build a small section of the city (32x32 48x48 base plate). I am going to cover the plate in 1x1 pearl gold round plates (or 1x2 jumpers) and use the 1x2 pearl gold jumpers as bricks. (I have 1,000 of each (I have over 2,000 Jumpers)on its way from bricklink) Below are a few pics of the techniques I am thinking about using. Any suggestions on the build would be welcomed. I am also looking for suggestions on Minifigs of the main characters to use for my MOC. I think this is my favorite way to make the buildings. (corner view) Side view 1x2 jumpers stacked up straight 1x1's as the base and a different way to make the corner of the building Some of the Gold parts I will use on the MOC Quote
CptMugwash Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Holy Moly! That's alot of gold I really hope it turns out good. you've definately got your work cut out The only thing I'd suggest for the minifigs is using bricklink and go through each part (torso, head, etc.) to find a close enough match. Good luck Quote
Gregorovich Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Sounds excellent! I can't wait to see it when it's finished! Quote

Commander Laquiet Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Holy Moly! That's alot of gold I agree . When this is finished, it will be truly impressive. I like your techniques for buildings etc thus far, and really am intrigued to see how this creation turns out. Good luck! Quote
hollywood_heidke Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I absolutely love the fact that someone else remembers this show! Good luck, that is going to me so much gold you might go blind :) If I think of any minifig ideas I'll post them here. Quote

I like your techniques for buildings etc thus far, and really am intrigued to see how this creation turns out. Good luck! I am also curious to see how this turns out. I think this will be my most challenging build I have ever tried, simply because of the lack of options for Gold bricks. I am going to increase the size to an extra large base plate (48x48). This will give me more freedom to do a few buildings. Quote

I'm looking forward to seeing the results! ;-) I think anyone who grew up in the 80's in the USA and watched Nickelodeon remembers it. For years it has been rumored that a season 2 was in development. Finally it looks like we will get a season 2 in 2012!!! I even read somewhere that the original English voices of the principles would be interested in reprising their roles! Here is a link to the face book page of MCOG Mysterious Cities of Gold Face Book Page with Season 2 announced Quote
74louloute Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Amazing, I just thought about making a MOC of this show last week. I saw you are looking for minifig inspiration, maybe I'm allowed to post my picture of the 4 major characters : I used this to enter the "4" Challenge a few days ago. I'm not totally convinced, so feel free to use and modify them ! I will follow your project with great attention ! Good luck with collecting that many gold Quote

Thanks! Quote
Alex the Great Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I also like the first wall design better, but I'd say for you to maybe put in a bit of both. I don't really know the series, but best of luck to you! Quote

Dr. Steve Posted March 7, 2011 Author Posted March 7, 2011 (edited) Updated pics on page one BELOW, Is it best to update my 1st post for a WIP or should I add new posts each time I want to add some new pics? Edited March 7, 2011 by Dr. Steve Quote
Admiral Croissant Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Updated pics on page one, Is it best to update my 1st post for a WIP or should I add new posts each time I want to add some new pics? Most of us just post a new post in a single WIP thread. If you change the first post, the comments don't fit the pictures anymore. And when it's finished it's ok. to make a new thread ofcourse. Nice pictures by the way. You can't use many different techniques with only one bricktype but it sure is impressive with all the gold Quote
Derfel Cadarn Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Building a city out of thousands of gold jumper plates? I think you're crazy! But these sort of ideas turn out well and it looks like you're off to a good start. I remember the cartoon well, ive often thought about delving into some old tv cartoon series for moc building, like Visionaries, Thundercats, Tintin, that sort of thing and this is another forgotten classic. The figs look great and it will be interesting to see how you pull this off, as pearl gold is a colour that doesn't have a large variety of bricks to choose from and I admire you building this for that fact. I look forward to seeing the end result! Quote

You can't use many different techniques with only one bricktype but it sure is impressive with all the gold Thanks, I will do that! Here are some new pics The Jumpers are not very stable (they don't hold a straight line when stacked). To fix this I am going to build a wall of bricks behind the jumpers to give them some support. Here is the fix to the problem Edited March 7, 2011 by Dr. Steve Quote
Dr. Steve Posted March 10, 2011 Author Posted March 10, 2011 Here are a few updated pics As you can see I have completed the base of the large main structure (minus the stairs). I will be adding 2 more smaller levels to it. I have also began building a 2nd structure that is smaller. Building these structures with other colored brick in the center has done a lot to increase stability. All of the black brick you see will be covered in Gold. I just ordered another 1,000 jumpers. That will give me 4,000+ jumper tiles to work with. I must say that this has been a fun challenge to build something with suck a limited number of bricks. Quote
BrickPerfection Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Looks promising! I am a bit worried however the small selection of parts may make it look too monotone. Your choice of using the golden microfigures as decorative elements is a fairly good one! I think you should browse through Bricklink and try to make use of every single pearl gold part that exists to have more possibilities; and make it look more interesting. Quote

Thanks, I am doing just that. I think there are a number of parts that will be helpful with building the roofs. I am not going to rush this MOC. I am going to finish the two buildings I am working on and then experiment with different techniques and parts to try to make some different looking buildings. Once I have some samples of other ideas I will post them and would appreciate any feedback on them. Quote
Artanis I Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Freak me sideways, that's a lot of pearl gold... I'll be keenly watching progress. I sadly assume that there won't be a golden condor however. Quote
Admiral Croissant Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Looks promising, and impressive! I wish I had that much gold I agree with Perfectionist about looking for more pearl gold parts and I think that you even can make some different building techniques just with jumpers. Like on the first picture of the new update. There you could put jumpers between those on the top row and place another row on top of it to secure it. Hope you get what I mean. Good luck anyway!
