Hi, a few minutes ago I tried my M motor but it didn't work, and it's still not working.

So what do I do?

Is there a known way of fixing a motor or should it go directly to the trash can?

Thanks!

I had the same problem with I believe two or three PF motors a really long time ago and after a couple months of trying to figure out what was wrong I called Lego and after sending my broken motors to them they sent me some new ones for free. What I found out after all that time of thinking was that the the actual wiring had come loose after all that handling. It is a rather annoying problem for if the wire is bent in one position it might work but it won't work in another position. I think this the problem with one of my M Motors. After trying to find a position that would work I think it stopped working completely. As for the other two.. or one.. (i don't really remember. It was a REALLY long time ago) I think they just randomly stopped working..

You may be able to send it back to Lego, but if you can't...

If the motor core itself is broken, just replace it. There are many different motors exactly this size and shape, some probably more powerful than the one in the M-motor. I once replaced the motor with one from a 4.5v RC car, so I could use the PF M with the RC car's circuit board.

Open the M motor to find out what the problem is (the motor core or the connections). If the core is not broken, reconnect it. If it is broken but you don't want to replace it with a different one, at least keep the gearbox and housing as spare parts for repairing broken motors in the future or for making customized PF motors.

(the link is to a PF XL which spins at 6x the normal speed).

When I go to the lego.com costumer service I says replacement parts-> broken parts(in a new purchase). Should I click that?

And describe your problem, they should reply or call you in few days. I had broken XL motor (too late described it's only broken cable) - but they send me new motor, and told to keep this broken (if it's something that i want to repair by myself, i can keep it and try to repair :P)

This is auto responder email. Now someone from lego customer service will contact you - via phone or email.

Exactly. From my experience, Lego support is kinda slow in replies, but work. They send my broken parts within 3 weeks without discussion. Lego customer care is much better in last two years.

They won't always contact you, often they'll just ship the part. If you need to post back the faulty part you'll get a note telling you with the replacement part.

That's great! And even better is that my motor is back to life! I hope it stays like that... :)

To prolong the life of any brushed motor, it's a good idea to break-in the motor, by free running it for 10 minutes on each directions without any load or gears attached to it. This will allow the carbon brush to seat and confirm properly on the armature, therefore reducing the motor life-shortening 'arching' (sparks). I did this to all my PF motors. I dream one day Lego will make a maintanance free sensored base brushless motor, which has HUGE advantage over brushed motor such as no brushes to wear out, no arching, less resistance, more efficient power delivery therefore more torque. However that'll shoot the price way above the current PF setup, since a brushless motor control module is required too,but that could be integrated within the PF battery box so size should remain the same.
