Deinonychus Posted June 10, 2006 Posted June 10, 2006 For any of you interested in Transformers (I know there's at least a couple of you ;-) ) you might get a kick out of this. For the past few years I've been doing custom Transformer repaints and sticking them under the banner of Transformers: Legacy. I hadn't gotten one finished in a year or so, and I finally managed to get around to a new one and finished today (Cosmos) so I figured I'd just post here in case anyone cared to look. Transformers: Legacy Now I must warn you, the bandwidth on my webspace is crap so it could go out at any time, so please forgive me if you get a dead link, just try again in 24 hours :-P Anyhow, the philosophy behind these are to take one mold and transfer the colors from another toy onto it as faithfully as possible...that's why some look as if they would be better with more or different colors. And don't be confused by the "story". The plot is told sort of like if it were on toy packaging; through the front page blurb and information in the bios, so don't feel like you're missing anything. Not all of the creations are mine, but the majority are. So, enjoy! Quote
JINZONINGEN73 Posted June 10, 2006 Posted June 10, 2006 Pretty sweet, faithful jobbies you're poopin' out here. I especially love your remake of Action Master Krok: http://bellsouthpwp.net/d/e/deinonychus/legacy/krok.html You totally have those colors DOWN. That's really similar to his original head, too. Good eye! TF color-swapping is fun, but I like doing as much as possible without physically painting / using photoshop: http://www.maj.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=85629 Stupid question... I've been out of the TF-buying loop a loooong time... ...yours ARE photoshops, right? Like, those aren't all spliced n diced repaints, right? Quote
Deinonychus Posted June 10, 2006 Author Posted June 10, 2006 Nope, those are all real-deal paint and plastic toys. I couldn't do a digital repaint if I tried. And thanks...Krok is one of my all-time personal favorite creations and I always like it when someone else apreciates what I was going for with him Quote
JINZONINGEN73 Posted June 10, 2006 Posted June 10, 2006 Nope, those are all real-deal paint and plastic toys. I couldn't do a digital repaint if I tried. Dayum! What kind/brands of paint do you use? On the all too rare occasion I've tried in the past to paint TFs and other action figs, the paint was sometimes "sticky", not ever quite drying... like the paint was incompatible with the plastics used. (Then again, I'm referencing paints from like 15 years ago, so they're probably better these days...) Quote

(Then again, I'm referencing paints from like 15 years ago, so they're probably better these days...) The paint I use ranges from all kinds and brands. Mostly I use regular oil based spray paints that you can get from any retail store and common model paints for the main colors, then use acrylic craft paints or small bottle model paints for detailing. There is even a paint called Fusion made by Krylon that's formulated specificly to work on plastic. So, I'm guessing your past troubles could have a lot to do with past paint quality, there's a lot out there nowadays. The only paint I would never reccomend are latex based sprays or anything with rust protection in it (which is a shame since those always seem to have the colors I'm looking for :-P ) Quote
JINZONINGEN73 Posted June 10, 2006 Posted June 10, 2006 Very helpful. Out of curiosity, do you remember specifically what paint(s) were used on this chick's squishy, Bionicle weapon type plastics? (Like the visor, hands, ...) http://bellsouthpwp.net/d/e/deinonychus/legacy/fatale.html Quote
Deinonychus Posted June 10, 2006 Author Posted June 10, 2006 That'd be ACE Hardware Premium brand metallic spraypaint in chrome. I love that paint, its some of the most well behaved and visually pleasing paint I've found. I'm always looking for excuses to chrome something out Quote
UltraPrime Posted June 10, 2006 Posted June 10, 2006 Very impressive :) I think my favourite is Grimlock - simple, but effective. Quote
optimus-convoy Posted June 10, 2006 Posted June 10, 2006 Ah, I remember finding that site a year or so ago. Great repaints. :-) Quote
Dino_Bot Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 i saw these a long time ago! deinonycon scared the wits out of me! lol, and "Logan"?? that's teh awesome. Wha TF is that? Stinkbomb? Ahaha! optimal Grimlock! whoever would have thought of that! and that's your newest, right? I hadn't seen that one. But they're awesome. Quote
Deinonychus Posted June 21, 2006 Author Posted June 21, 2006 Added Starscream last night...it was quite a challenge taking one of the most godawful molds in Transformers history and trying to make something decent out of it :-D Quote
JINZONINGEN73 Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 True, but Piranacon (?) just got prettier. Quote
UltraPrime Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Nice :) Never been a great fan of beastformers really, but a few are nice. Quote
SuvieD Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 I really like the custom paint jobs that look like the classics in color. Nothing beats the classics. My favorite is probably spider megatron. Have you ever considered building these in LEGO form or perhaps painting the figures to match the bot forms? Quote
UltraPrime Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 I wonder if, with the film coming out next year, TLC would do a movie line... Quote

Probably like a lot of us when I was a kid I did some fully functioning Transformers out of LEGOs...but as an adult I've always run across problems with getting the right parts in the right colors to do anything decent. However this guy I know of who calls himself The Librarian has posted some awesome LEGO Transformers over here at the Transfandom Forums. his stuff is magnificent (I personally dig his Insecticons) and pretty much beats anything I could even try to do. ;-) Quote
JINZONINGEN73 Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 Admirable job he's done on them... but the studs are overwhelming. Quote
Dino_Bot Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 OMFG. Those are amazing...I remember seeing wayy back a fully functional lego Arcee. Quote
Deinonychus Posted July 4, 2006 Author Posted July 4, 2006 Okay, in the past week or so I've added a self-serving Dinobot repaint made into my online Avatar (as most of you have probably seen off to the left over here <-------- ) and I just put up a Centurion robot from the old UK comic series. Here's the link to my site again so you don't have to go back to the topics's first page. http://bellsouthpwp.net/d/e/deinonychus/legacy/ So, nothing too spectacular recently, but I've finally started on one of my long-planned biggest projects, so look forward to that one ;-) Quote
