ED-209 Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Speaking with DrNightmare, I had the idea of putting together some decals of Conan the Barbarian, based on Arnold Schwarzenegger's break-out role in 1982. It's not as accuate as I'd like, because short of resculpting some hair I won't be able to get his leather headband to sit over his hair. But nevertheless, here's the decal: And here's a reference shot for comparison: Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Very well done decals ED-209! I think it's very accurate based on the reference image. I'd love to see this applied on an actual custom Conan minifig. Great job! Quote
LuxorV Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Yet another splendid design from you, ED-209 I really like how you managed to capture his expression! Quote
Henchmen4Hire Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 (edited) YES! All hail ED-209! Hail King Conan! Do you have a personal website where you post your work? I'd like to do a quick write-up about this on my site if you don't mind. And what's this in my pocket? Oops, it seems to have fallen out! What a lovely idea for your next design! Would you take on a few commissions for designs? How much would you charge? Edited February 6, 2011 by DrNightmare Quote

Henchmen4Hire Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Well that's pretty messed up, what about people who speak english as a second language? They can't participate in conversations because they dont place commas correctly? :( I understand everything Aveal is saying... Quote
Aveal the black sheep Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 (edited) Where exactly is the mistake may I inquire? Oh is it the capitalization on the word 'guess'? And further analysis reveals that I should have used capital "I" in the middle of sentences. Edited February 7, 2011 by Aveal the black sheep Quote
ED-209 Posted February 9, 2011 Author Posted February 9, 2011 Thanks for all the compliments everyone! But I realised I've made a slight mistake, I used the slightly darker flesh tones hoping to resemble Conan's "I spend all day in the sun wearing a loincloth" tan... but I don't think Lego have ever released legs in that colour! Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I redo them in light flesh? I'd prefer to keep the tanned look if possible, but can't think of any other options as paint would just scratch off the legs the moment you sat the figure down. *ED-209 strokes beard in contemplative fashion* YES! I don't have a site, no. Just various EB threads! I don't mind you writing about my decals at all, I'm quite flattered! You were planning on making one of Red Sonja though, I wouldn't be stepping on your toes? I was thinking of perhaps doing a Brigitte Nielsen version, but couldn't see an easy way to recreate her mullet! Maybe the comic version would be more practical. I'd be happy to do commissions if you had something specific you were after, PM me if you're interested in discussing it further. Quote
IAmWillGibson Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 While I like the tanned look, and this is all very appropriate as I just watched the two Conan movies just a few nights ago, I think a variant version with the palette swapped to standard yellow might be nice, too, and easier to implement. Slap the Pop Star hair on there and you're good to go, although I'm not sure how far down that'll sit on the forehead, and it may look a bit too glam. Quote

Good point, I'm an action figure customizer so completely ignored the problem since I'm used to painting everything, haha. It's a lot harder to paint LEGO well... here are some pics of my Red Sonja action figure work in progress: http://thefwoosh.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=93&t=59861&start=75 I don't think I'll make the LEGO version's decals, I'm not that talented with photoshop/illustrator There's no easy solution... I would stick with the usual flesh and yellow, and if making comics would adjust the color in photoshop. Edited February 9, 2011 by DrNightmare Quote
AhabDarab Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 (edited) Thanks for another great custom ED-209. Conan was near the top of my private wish list. Great job! My world only has yellow people, so I'll need to remove his tan. Other than that, it's perfect! (Edit) Krom be praised!! Ahab out... Edited February 11, 2011 by AhabDarab Quote

By Crom, why didn't that occur to me?! So while I still haven't fully solved the problem of no darker flesh legs being available, at least now I've got two other options. Yellow: I think this is the correct CMYK values for light flesh, but it seems to be curiously absent from Peeron's colour charts. If anyone knows for sure, please enlighten me! I was just intending to give him one of the old style long hair pieces: Good point, I'm an action figure customizer so completely ignored the problem since I'm used to painting everything, haha. Have you ever sculpted any parts for Lego? I'll take care of the Lego incarnation of her then! Thanks for another great custom ED-209. Conan was near the top of my private wish list. Great job! And for anyone who hasn't already come across this parody before: "Conan the Barbarian the Musical" Enjoy! Quote
Aveal the black sheep Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Nice versions, although I still think the overtanned color of the first suits perfectly. Do you think it could work if you made dark flesh decals/stickers for the legs and cover some light flesh ones(or any other leg for that matter? Quote
Henchmen4Hire Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 I've never sculpted on anything smaller than a GI Joe, but I wouldn't mind sculpting some things for LEGO and have a caster pay me for the design :P Quote
