TWTaylor Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 So, it's a snow day here in Central Texas, and I can't get to work, so it's a perfect opportunity to get my lego city straightened out! The area is 14x4', and here is it's current state - The West Side - this is supposed to be the 'downtown area'. The issue is where to put the yellow train station and courthouse. I'm thinking about putting the whole area one baseplate back, but this will require moving the freight yard behind the modular buildings. The central area - This is the 'residential area'. I really want this to be a transist-oriented walkable type community with mixed residences and businesses. Obviously the things like the Crystal King and Nuckel's ATV must go. East Side - This is the airport area and is total mess as a catch all. The airport and the train track get in each other's way. I'm totally open to suggesstions And in between the residential area and the airport - the Grand Carousel, around which I'd like to build a carnival/theme park area. I'd really appreciate suggestions, and will post updates as I work on it today. Seems like the perfect bad weather project. Quote
Fuzzylegobricks Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Try Putting some more baseplates and City themed things like no crystal king, And you could maybe try snot on the side walks. Quote
CptMugwash Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Hi, that's a real nice city, did you say your area is 14 feet by 4 feet? and any chance of maybe a long shot? as I think it would look good to give us a general idea of the size of your city. I see the problem with your airport, it's those damn planes, they're just far too big but so irresistable. An idea could be to suspend the planes with some 'invisible' wire so they don't take up the room. Maybe try and fit in a small runway and try moving the track around a bit so they're not too close. lightningtiger Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Interesting place, though 'Fuzzylegobricks' got it slightly wrong about SNOT....some tiling to show pavement and green, brown and tan plates to show grass, dirt and sandy soil might be an idea. Also I would leave a gap of 8 studs between the pizza cafe and TRU store.....an outside eating area would be excellent there. Keep going, keep being creative and Brick On 'TWTaylor' ! Quote

Yes, it's 14feet by four feet. It was originally going to be an O scale train layout, before the return of Lego to my life. I'm on my mobile, so the best I can do for a long shot is a link to one I uploaded to flckr - http://m.flickr.com/#/photos/55775799@N06/5418554841/sizes/m/ Quote
Pandora Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 The central square is a lovely way to display your modular buildings (it reminds me of the square in The Sims 3) and gives a nice sense of community for your minifigs. You clearly have a huge town collection - it'd look great with baseplates at the corners and some trees, flowers and shrubbery in the central park, but that might just be the girl in me talking. P.S. Snow?? In Texas?? Quote
TWTaylor Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 Ok - I got a lot done over the weekend, even thought the snow was gone by early afternoon Friday - Here's what happened to the airport - Ariel View And street level - And here's downtown - Aeriel 1 and 2 And street level 1 2 3 And the freight yard Please let me know what you all think. EverettYA Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Great Job, TWTaylor! You really pulled the airport together! It looks a lot better now . I also like what you did with the freight yard. Can't believe you had snow in Texas ! Keep bricking! EverettYA Quote
Jay Sathe Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 It looks really good, Taylor! One suggestion though, I'd put the Bank where the Bike shop is, and push the bike shop down to there the large grey plate is, and I'd find a new place for the City House. Nobody likes living right next to noisy jets! Other than that, the rest of the city looks great, and the "Downtown" is superb. Quote

Only wish I had more space for multiple spurs. And I'd prefer a diesel locomotive, as that's what we have here in the states. Waiting on the Maersk train I guess, though I might MOD this one since Union Pacific is mostly yellow, and the predominant line around these parts. It looks really good, Taylor! I don't know if the nike shop will stay where it is, at this point it's a place holder. I'm going to build outside dining for the pizza shop for sure. There's a really good burger joint here in San Antonio that is right agaisnt the UP freight yard, so I'm going for some along that line. As for the bank and house by the airport, I'm trying to create a more suburban area, and think a bank down town would be less 'modern' looking. Quote
ACCURATEin Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Looking forward to future installments. Snow days are perfect for building a LEGO city. Quote
Captain Genaro Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 You have a great start to your city! I like the way you opened up the airport. Two things I would do would to make a sidewalk with plates or SNOT, and to add some plants to the open areas. P.S. Snow?? In Texas?? There was an article in the newspaper that said 6 people were hospitalized after snow fell off the roof of the Cowboys football stadium (where the Superbowl was played). Quote
