SilentMode Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) It's complete! See photograph below. Yet another WIP MOD. Whenever I'm waiting for parts to arrive to build earlier designs, I get so bored I start designing new things. Here's my first and probably last attempt at a modular building: a music label's headquarters. I don't know anything about building modular buildings, so I took the lead for the shape of the building, as well as diagonal positioning of elements, from the Café Corner LDD file. I've left some placeholder minifigures for later positioning and styling. Comments/suggestions welcome, and enjoy. Edited February 21, 2011 by SilentMode Quote
Pinky Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) Nice looking building, my comments/suggestions : it's very gray scale maybes a touch of colour to the sign or blue glass ? Nice MOC tho Pinks Edited January 12, 2011 by Pinky Quote

Nice MOC tho Pinks How about this: I wanted to keep the building white, but I agreed about the monochromeness. Quote
SilentMode Posted January 22, 2011 Author Posted January 22, 2011 I've started building this, and in all honesty I'm not happy with the design. I'm going to redesign everything from the ground floor up. Quote
Pinky Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 What in particular don't you like ? Pinks Quote
SilentMode Posted January 22, 2011 Author Posted January 22, 2011 What in particular don't you like ? Pinks I mainly wanted to revise the shapes of the first and second floors, as they have odd dimensions and are very awkward to floor using the plates. I'm also looking at changing the wall structures to use stacked bricks instead of 1x6x5s. Quote
SilentMode Posted January 28, 2011 Author Posted January 28, 2011 All right, here's the latest incarnation of the building: A number of improvements were made: Much cleaner and less rushed design. It's easier to use a rounded corner than an angular one, so I've found. I've made the building four storeys high, with a slightly shorter roof - side by side with the Grand Emporium model the original was shorter. The added floor will be for the large President's office. I'm replacing the brick-built sign with a place for a logo decal. The icon is built into the wall, which rather handily shows up inside the building as well. More windows! I also borrowed the "blinds" effect from lightningtiger's recent shop creation. All the floors upwards of the ground floor are constructed with 6x12 plates and a rounded 6x6 plate, rather than an awkward mix of smaller plates like last time. My only worry: where will I get all those 6x12s? At the moment I haven't decorated the second and third floors, and I'm looking for things to put on the roof. Quote
prateek Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 (edited) It does look more modern, but to be honest, I liked the old one better. The logo on the side of the building looks a bit awkward. You could find a way of hanging it from the corner I suppose. Edited January 28, 2011 by prateek Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Looking great so far SilentMode! Among your designs, I like the third version the best, mainly because of its overall modern look. Though I would have to agree with prateek that it would be better if the logo will be on an overhang and not on the wall. I'm certainly looking forward seeing this in real brickbuild. Quote
-R8- Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Nice clean, sleek appearance. The asymmetry of the windows goes well to accent the modern flair. I also like all the open space on the ground, which leads well into the angled door. It's very interesting seeing this evolve with different prototypes, leading up to this great end result. Quote
AwesomeTaylor Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Here it is... Oh my, there is a sniper on the roof!! I'd love to see more of this! I am currently awaiting some straggling orders from Bricklink so that I can build my first design that I made in LDD. I know I'm gonna have a ton of changes I want to make, so the more photos of your finished product and the design changes you went through would be incredible to read! Thanks for sharing this! Quote
SilentMode Posted February 23, 2011 Author Posted February 23, 2011 Okay, here's some more pictures. The back of the building. All of the designs had elevator doors incorporated, but it wasn't until the third iteration that I decided to actually have an elevator. The elevator is simply a plate with an old school rack mechanism attached. I was fortunate enough to have the relevant parts in my collection - the long rack pieces go for quite a lot on BrickLink. The second design had a third floor added; this is for the president's/chairman's office and his PA's reception. The US version of The Apprentice provided some inspiration. The second floor is the glassy meeting room area, with stair access from the first floor. The first floor is effectively an open lounge, complete with drinks cabinet and under-stair trophy display. If you want tea or coffee there's a very tight space under the stairs for it too. Watch TV while you wait. The ground floor has the main reception. Quote
