kzv Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Hi all and happy new year!!! In the past I've seen some extremely impressive MOCs that requires a huge lot of bricks... Where is the best place to buy, i.e., huge amount of tiles, single bricks, slopes etc? Is Bricklink the best place or will it be easier/cheaper to use PAB from Lego.com? I'm a conformist! kzv
LuxorV Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 You can look on the PAB section of the LEGO.com site (somewhat limited choice, only parts in production now), or you can go to Bricklink and browse the shops of people from all over the world (better choice, often better prices on standard elements; beware of the location of the seller for the shipping costs!). Hope this helps you.
fred67 Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 There's no way I know of to get huge numbers of bricks for any kind of reasonable price. If you are a member of a Lego User's Group, you may be eligible for the occasional bulk group purchase from TLG. I would say this - do NOT discount S@H's PAB section as being too expensive. I've often found bricks in "bulk" (100 pieces or more) that were cheaper than Bricklink. It's not common, but it happens, and you are guaranteed to get new, clean bricks without a smoky smell, without cat hair, and without free spiders.
Tobbe Arnesson Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 1) Compare prices between PaB and BrickLink, use the cheapest source. 2) If you join a LUG you might get access to the bulk-program. You need to hurry up for the 2011 deal though. Expect the bricks to arrive no sooner than summer. Far from all bricks available and the LUG can not buy that many different kinds of bricks (the LUG has to limit the list down). 3) Call LEGO customer service and tell them you want to purchase a specific brick, use the number found in the inventory at the back of modern instructions booklets. The number also "contains" color information. 4) Try to find a DACTA/Education-supplier that ships to end customers, some bricks are cheaper to find here. 5) Find out which sets contain the bricks in questions in the highest quantities and go nuts, especially when sets are on sale. Try several different solutions to achieve a certain look and use the one that is cheapest to get from BrickLink/PaB. All big creations need either a big collection or a big wallet. The cheapest way to get a big collection is to buy sets at sale but that takes time.
streifen Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 I like bricklink, personally. same same. in fact i just bought GBP40 worth of bricks from there.
Scorpio Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Don't forget the pick-a-brick at Lego Stores. Talk to your local Lego store employee and ask if they have a brown box of the element that you are looking for. A brown box costs $70 and depending on the piece it could save you a lot of money compared to Bricklink and Shop at Home. Also while at the Lego store look for grab bags. They are usually $8 and are a good source for brick.
nicoga3000 Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Can I ask a "noob" question? I want to grab some stuff from Bricklink to just increase my collection for MOC's. Is there big collections of LEGO that people sell, or do I have to go and grab individual bricks that I think I might use?

Is there big collections of LEGO that people sell, or do I have to go and grab individual bricks that I think I might use? You buy what you want... if someone has a large quantity of something then you can buy as much of it as you want. On my early bricklink days I was fortunate enough to find 1x2 and 1x1 white and black bricks for like $0.019 each and bought thousands of them just to have (I like them better than 2x4 and 2x2 for minifig scale). What I do when I need specific pieces is I'll find the store that I like (price/feedback/intuition) and after I put what I need in my cart, if it's not a lot, I'll see if I can't bulk up the order with other useful pieces, maybe see what the store has on sale.
kzv Posted January 5, 2011 Author Posted January 5, 2011 Thanx a lot folks for good feedback. I've done business with bricklink stores nomerous times and I think this works fine. The only think that annoys me is that I rearly find everything I want in one store, meaning sometimes the total shippingcost is as much as the brick cost Maybe I'll try PAB nex time... kzv
Tobbe Arnesson Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 I started out with BrickLink just a few months ago. In the beginning I was also looking at what bricks the store had in different colors I like. Now I look what parts they have and make sure to buy a few of what I don't already own. This way I will have a lot of different types of brick to experiment with. Correct colors can come in later orders, but having the bricks at hand makes prototyping so much easier.
