atomant Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 I want to build some stuff with gears, like a gear box or this: http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/10/apple-engineer-uses-lego-to-rebuild-ancient-greek-mechanism-wil/ What parts do I need to buy and where can I get them? I can't really find what I'm looking for. I've been to BrickLink.com and found the 871 Expert Builder/Gear Parts set, is this what I should get and is there anything else? Or is there something besides Legos that I should use? Thanks, Adam Quote
fred67 Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 First you plan it out, figure out the exact parts you need, then go to bricklink or LEGO Shop at Home pick-a-brick and buy the parts you want. You're not going to get what you need in a single set. Quote
DLuders Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Be sure to read Sariel's Gears Tutorial , and then shop for the needed gears on this Bricklink Catalog list of Technic gears. Quote
dhc6twinotter Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 In addition to some of the above gears, you will also need several old style differential gears. Looks like a fun project! Quote

Looks like a fun project! what project? in order to make a gearbox you will be best to get a selection of gears live showen above i gess you have axles and beams allready but if you don't you will need them as well,oh and you will need some axle conecters Quote
dhc6twinotter Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 what project? The OP said he may want to build the Antikythera Mechanism. I thought this sounded like a fun project. I should have made myself more clear...sorry. The old style differentials are useful in other projects as well. They are fun to experiment with. Adam, if you plan on building cranes, excavators, etc; one of the turntable gears will be useful as well. -Daniel Quote
AndyC Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Picking up a technic set or two is probably the best place to get started. If you can get your hands on the 8265 Front Loader, I'd recommend it since it comes with masses of gears. Quote

The 8258 Crane Truck is another set I'd recommend, and it is currently 50% off at Lego.com. Both those sets offer a great starting point, but even with those sets, a lot more gears would have to be purchased off bricklink to build something like the Antikythera Mechanism. Quote
