WesternOutlaw Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 In this epic air battle, the Bi-Wing Baron will match aviation skills against the newer Sopwith Spirit of Luis. Classic Adventurers vs. Pharaoh's Quest, which plane is your favorite? All things considered, which of the two bi-planes do you like better? 5928 Bi-Wing Baron (1998) -vs- 7307 Flying Mummy Attack (2011) Adventure Face-Off! NOTE: Vote for your favorite bi-plane, not favorite set. Price and accessories not considered. Quote
Gryphon Ink Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I think the Spirit of Luis is a much more graceful craft overall, but I love the engine assembly on the older plane. SoL also loses a lot of points for the fact that Jake can't see a thing, although it's easy to mod it so that he can. Voted for SoL overall, and thinking I should try to mod mine to include that engine detail. Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 My vote goes to the Spirit of Luis, it's just more sleek looking than the Bi-wing Baron, understandably due to the more 'advanced' parts of the newer plane. I also like the dark red color better, highlighted with the Sophit emblem, this proves to be the better constructed plane in my humble view. Quote
CMP Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 Spirit of Luis. It's much more sleeker, modern, and with a better color scheme than the Baron. Not to mention better armed. 2 machineguns are worth at least 10 rifles. And, although it doesn't affect my decision much, I prefer Jake to the Baron. Quote
Cardinal Brick Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I'm not sure, I think I'll reserve final judgment until I have them both in my hands to compare. However at the moment I perfer Bi-Wing Baron which I think has a more rugged apearance and while Spirit of Luis is sleek it doesn't look like it would last very long in the desert. I think the best bi-plane is the one from 2879 however. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I like both. I like planes, Bi-Planes more so. Both of them have their merits and their fails. The Baron's plane (I think I called it the Mith, I was a strange child) is like the canvas skinned planes of the First World War and the roaring 20s while the "Spirit of Luis" (silly name, I shall give it a new one) is more like the later harder skinned planes. In a less/more meta way, one is designed in the more "classic" style of Lego sets in a set size point sadly retired in most lines (apart from Town) the other follows the modern style. Now, if you're talking about a dogfight, well that all depends upon the pilot Quote
Skafte Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 It's a really tough call. I only own the older one, so I'm a bit biased. Bi-Wing Baron has a much better looking engine (with flames!) and nostalgia feel. Clumsy wheels and more blocky. Spirit has sleeker, rounded wings and better landing gear. Oversized propeller, and too bad the sticker pieces aren't printed. That would have tipped the scale in favour of the Spirit, I feel. As is, and before I've built the Spirit, I won't cast a vote - it's a tie! Quote
lightningtiger Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I voted for the Spirit, more realistic and less blocky. Keep on flying ! Quote
Nikola Bathory Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I voted for the new one - Spirit of Luis, even though I don't own it yet. Quote
Cancerkitty Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I have to go with the Spirit as well. It's got some rough spots, but it's got great lines and an awesome color scheme. Quote
The Yellow Brick Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I have voted for Spirit of Luis. Because of it's smoother design and it also has alot more interesting colours Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted December 8, 2010 Author Posted December 8, 2010 at the moment I perfer Bi-Wing Baron which I think has a more rugged apearance and while Spirit of Luis is sleek it doesn't look like it would last very long in the desert. At last, someone votes for the Bi-Wing Baron. I too, voted for the old Baron's plane as it brings back a lot of classic adventure for me. I also like the four rifles attached. There is one issue with this plane (at least the one I have). The wings never held tight to the old grey panels. Did any of you (who had this plane) have the same issue? I think the best bi-plane is the one from 2879 however. Interesting - I've been looking at this set closely. I actually passed this up many years ago, regretting it now. It looks like a fine set, esp. the bi-plane. Now, if you're talking about a dogfight, well that all depends upon the pilot Yes - the pilots would certainly affect the outcome. Jake is pretty slick in his brown bomber jacket. EDIT: Looks like the Spirit is in the lead: Quote
Still Raindrop Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 (edited) Much as it pains me, I had to vote for the Spirit of Luis. I really loved the old Adventurers line, but Pharaoh's Quest has really been impressing me, creating sets that I like even better than the ones I was nostalgic about. Of course, Bi-Wing Baron will always have a place in my memory. Edited December 8, 2010 by Mariko Quote
dr jones Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 b- wing baron all the way, I just love the old adventures look altough I like the dark red on the Spirit Quote
Captain Blockbeard Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 My vote is: Bi-wing Baron < Spirit of Luis <= 5909 Treasure Raiders Biplane Quote
Cpt. Dan Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 Spirit. Love the design on it and the clean lines. Plus, can't deny the two machine guns for a primary weapon as opposed to two rifles. Wish they came with Lewis Guns, but the Brickarms piece might be a great addition... Quote
Haltiamieli Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I don't own either one, so I based my vote on the pictures alone. Both planes have their share of strengths and weaknesses, but in the end I voted for Spirit of Luis mostly because of those huge and rather heavy-looking wheels of Bi-wing Baron. They just make it look seriously unbalanced, too "toy-ish". Spirit of Luis also has too studs longer wingspan, which is nice. Quote
______ Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 New one is so much better, old one is probably better for parts like shot-gun and tan pieces. Quote
prateek Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 This one's tough, but I have to go with the new one. It's just sleeker, and the colours are better. Totally off topic, but I'm longing for a copy of IJ Fighter Plane Attack! Quote
ZO6 Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 I had to go with the Bi-Wing Baron. While the Spirit of Luis is from one of my favorite sets of the Pharaoh's Quest line, the simplicity of the Bi-Wing Baron can't beat, and it's that simplicity that gives it its charm. That and the Bi-Wing Baron is nearly unmatched in terms of swoshability. I'm glad to be the owner of both planes, but if I could only keep one it'd be the good old Bi-Wing Baron. Quote
Man with beard Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 I voted Baron. Who doesn't like flames coming out of 1x1 clips on your wings? Quote
CommanderFox Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 Spirit Of Luis all the way. Bi-wing Baron isn't bad, just to blocky and clumsy imo. CF Quote
Donut Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 I like the Spirit of Luis out of the two. However in a dog fight, the baron will win. He's got 13+ years of experience than the other pilot! Quote
Walter Kovacs Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 I own the Bi-Wing Baron, and I absolutely love the set. The engine details are fantastic, and it had four rifles (which is a big deal in my collection). But the Spirit of Luis has much better machine guns, and I'm afraid that's the detail that tips the scale. Quote
Mrlegoninja Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 I like both of them, but I have to say Spirit is better. The design is more sleek, and also the dark red colors make me like it more. Quote
