XimenaPaulina Posted December 6, 2010 Posted December 6, 2010 Nice work on these Transport Truck exon! Do you more photos of it? (to appreciate it more in different views) Though I think the wheels at the back are too small for a huge transport truck like that. Quote
exon_from_youtube Posted December 6, 2010 Author Posted December 6, 2010 Nice work on these Transport Truck exon! Do you more photos of it? (to appreciate it more in different views) Though I think the wheels at the back are too small for a huge transport truck like that. I had to use the small wheels, if not it would be only good for one row of cars... double high, with the big wheels would make it over a scale 15 feet high.... LOL when I put it next to the dealership right now, with the cars on deck it is higher then the building.... I was charging my Nikon and had to use my blackberry to take the picture.. So tomorrow I will upload some more... check out the compact car page of mine and you can see the truck in 3 car mode.. I just made it longer last night and for about 7 hours today I had to move my city around to incorporate the 7642 set (last one on the shelf, LOL) I had to rework the building to get it to take up just 1.5 base plates (was very hard) because my city table is only 4 feet by 4 feet and if left stock it would have wasted a lot of extra space... Tomorrow I am going over to the shop and picking up some of my 7/8" plywood and making the 9 foot table... city will look very empty for a bit after that... But it seems most people go with the 8 to 10 foot tables with a depth of 3 to 4 feet... so a 9ft by 3.5 curved into 4 ft should be the bees knees. Quote
pacc Posted December 6, 2010 Posted December 6, 2010 There's another recent car transport by selander. As a trailer it may not work to have two floors at the front. In reality they do use supersmall wheels and cheat a bit by storing the frontmost car at an angle since the hood is lower anyway. Personally I would try using the technics bricks to try to lower the upper level and maybe at 90 degrees as support. Quote
Ralph_S Posted December 6, 2010 Posted December 6, 2010 (edited) I love car transporters. There is so much scope for detail! wouldn't worry too much about the height. These things are tall. 15 ft. to the top of the cars on the upper deck isn't unreasonable. If the truck becomes taller than the building, I'd say the issue is that the buildings are too low and not the truck too tall. What I don't like about it is the width and how heavy the construction looks. Selanders truck shows that with a bit of ingenuity it's quite possible to make a truck that is six studs wide and can fit four-wide cars. It is definitely possible to make it all a bit more elegant whilst maintaining sufficient strength. Here is my take on a similar truck (a model from about two and a half years ago). I build my cars at five studs wide, so my truck had to be a bit wider than six studs. I chose 7. car carrier (1) by Mad physicist, on Flickr It's obviously fairly big, with an overall length of about 50 studs, but that isn't a hell of a lot longer than your truck, and yet mine carries 7 larger cars. I think there is a lot of space to be gained on yours by changing the layout. The upper deck could be stretched much further forward and if you feel it becomes too tall, you could try to save some space by sloping the decks slightly (like on my older larger scale truck). lightningtiger Posted December 6, 2010 Posted December 6, 2010 Not bad 'exon', might I add though a bit blocky....slimming some of the vehciles parts might help it look more realistic. Now where is this dealership.....I can see a garage (workshops) but ? Keep on going and also, I'm a conformist! ! Quote

Now where is this dealership.....I can see a garage (workshops) but ? Keep on going and also, I'm a conformist! ! As for the cars width, I made the transport for the "Compact cars" (smart cars) primarily On a note to the others that gave ideas, I did take note... But I built it with what I had to use other then making it a rainbow trailer... I was going to use more tech parts, but Did not have the amount I needed... Also, that would make the trailer over 9 wide and every one knows that lego roads only allow 7 wide max...unless you make the wide load stickers... Then again, I never have seen a wide load car transport... I was going to make the transport with a mid ramp but got stuck with what I had made because it would have made a binding point on the lower deck..... I do plan on five more compact cars on the 15th of December... so stay tuned As it is like it is.... Keep bricking every one thanks again for the comments Quote
exon_from_youtube Posted December 7, 2010 Author Posted December 7, 2010 Update: Yes I do believe this is as close to the real thing as you can get (in the USA Style) It now can fit up to 8 cars.... yep! Quote
pacc Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 Much better, I think I've seen the trick to go up then down in reality, it's a nice feature. Quote
buddy Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 Great MOC! The latest version looks better and more realistic than the previous version. Well done. ~buddy~ Quote
exon_from_youtube Posted December 7, 2010 Author Posted December 7, 2010 thank you every one.... But, wouldn't you know today, I drove by a real car hauler and it was almost right on... the difference was that the car that was over the fifth wheel (hitch) was parallel with the top rail... But I do like the latest version, so it stays like that.... By the way I picked up three more compact cars today... building the last one in a couple minutes.... making dinner out weighs legos I guess Quote
bricked one Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 *snip* *snip* How do those last two cars not fall off? I don't see any anchors or anything. Quote
KyleJohnson11 Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I love it Exon! It looks great! I love the revisions that were made. It is a really nice addition to your dealership. Quote

LOL you know now that you point that out..... That could be a problem up hills... or it could be like the Miami Vise movie....LOL All them cars just keep falling into traffic for a whole mile here it is with six compact cars and a MOC car.... seven total.... If I flush the bumpers and cram one more in it would take eight. I need more colors if you ask me... may make a blue one tonight PS... five cars came with a minifigure with brown hair... one came with black hair.... WTF? Ralph_S Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 How do those last two cars not fall off? I don't see any anchors or anything. You didn't look closely enough. Their front wheels sit have a tile in front and behind them, so they sit in a little depression. That is enough to keep them from falling off. On a real truck like this, they would also be chained down, of course. LOL you know now that you point that out..... That could be a problem up hills... or it could be like the Miami Vise movie....LOL All them cars just keep falling into traffic for a whole mile Many of these trucks don't actually have a rear ramp that folds up. Instead they have two narrow plates that slide out the back to load and unload cars. I think the new version is an improvement, but it still looks a bit clunky to me. If you had any more plates I'd recommend replacing some of the technic bricks with those, as well replacing the grey hinge bricks with hinge plates. You could still replace the tiny rear wheels with bigger ones with a bit of creativity. The larger tyres you've used for the tractor leave a gap of four studs between them, which means you can have cars sitting between them as well. Ralph Quote

Trust me, in do time this rig will look as if it came out of a box or better... Those hinges that I have used are locking type. the others that I have tried have sagged and dropped and when I installed a lock stud it would tweak on the chassis rails and create a failure point... It may not look as clean as yours, but this can handle an 8 year old childs hands and not break too easy... As for the rear wheels, again I was going with the low boy bed... here in the states to move trains and heavy equipment on the highways they use a trailer with six duely axles in the back with small 15 inch wheels rated for high loads... it just keeps the bed as low to the ground as possible Quote

exon_from_youtube Posted December 8, 2010 Author Posted December 8, 2010 I love car transporters too. Really nice models that you made there. I also made one some time ago, based on the trailer of set 6335: I realy like yours, but it is based on 6 wide... I had to make my transport for 7 wide so strutting the sides would then make it 9 wide for me and well that is my major problem.... Note: smart cars (compact cars) are based on 4 wide, but the new gokart style wheels makes them a hair under 5 wide.... I wish they did not stick out like they did, but I do not plan on putting the old style wheels on them any time soon to narrow the truck.... I did however like the complexity of the 7 wide build... was rewarding in the end for me keep bricking.... stay tuned. I have a upgrade in the plans for this later Quote

LEGO Guy Bri Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 The only bad thing is it turns crazy wide.... But then again it is full sized to the max..... I need to make wide load markers for it.... Cool auto rack! Suggestion for possible slightly better turn ratio: move the triaxle trailer wheels a few studs forwad. Shorter wheel base= tighter turn radius. But not to far otherwise it'll throw off the look Good work tho!! Quote
