Anyway, I'm making a nativity, and so have some shepherds.

The shepherds, naturally, are going to need some sheep by December, and not just the two sheepdogs they currently have. I've seen a few decent sheep designs on here, but it's not always been entirely clear how they were constructed. So any guides/text instructions/general ideas? I don't have very many white ones of these, but do have an awful lot of these, if it helps.

Well, I came up with a cool sheep design of my own earlier this year. I'll post an LXF so you can see how it's built (should open with LDD versions 3 or 4). Click the image to download the LXF.

Haven't really seen many sheep MOCs before, but I like mine because the studs make it seem nice and wooly. Plus, I like the hooves (they're what inspired me to make it in the first place).

Hope you find a sheep that goes well with your nativity scene! I have fond memories of trying to make a LEGO nativity many times throughout my childhood, and I've seen some lovely ones posted here, so I'm sure you'll be able to come up with something very charming!

That's awesome, Aanchir. I'm going to have to do a bo peep comic... so you'll have to specify where you want the credit link to go. <3

TLG is releasing next year a game called 'Shave a sheep' with brick build sheeps in it, maybe you can have a look at them. But I think they are not the best, although the head looks great!

They have one out now called Wild Wool.

They appear to be the same game, perhaps just renamed for different markets? Either way, you can get it now and the sheep do look quite cute.

Quite large to use with minifigures, though. Even mine is pushing it a bit in terms of size. The Brickforge one is ideal, but might not be within the budget of some buyers (not sure how many people are keen on purchasing custom parts for the purpose of a single, seasonal MOC).

Randal, you can just say "Credit to Aanchir" and link to my profile. That should be sufficient.

I'm a purist who feels guilty when I use a spear I accidentally snapped the head off as part of a staff, so custom sheep are out

TBone's looks the best in terms of scale, but it's hard to work out from a single image like that exactly how to build it. I may try something like that and report back no the results - in the mean time, feel free to reply with any other suggestions

See I always find this to be interesting. First he would need to find a seller that has all the pieces he needs, and usually it is tough to find everything in one swoop. And a lot of vendors play hardball with the minimum buys, and its usually the ones who have that set up that have all the pieces. If he can't find them all togeter, he will have to purchase from more than one vendor. And while you are doing this search, the prices then start to change because pricess differ with each vendor. And then we have shipping attached as well. And then you have to wait for the invoice(s). Chances are you will be spending more.

With BrickForge, the price is set and checkout all at once.

You'll be spending roughly the same no matter which option you take. And if you have the money for the above option, you also have money for the BrickForge option.

Of course only way around this is if he already has the pieces. :P

I'm using "budget" not to mean how much a person has to spend on them, but how much a person wants to spend on them. Some people might not want to spend anything at all, preferring to work with parts they already own. Others might be willing to put more money towards more versatile basic bricks rather than a specialized mold. I wasn't at all trying to suggest that Brickforge isn't affordable-- if you're going to buy online anyway and prefer to work with a piece of the same quality as other LEGO animals, Brickforge and other customizers are certainly the way to go. But people have different preferences that determine what "budget" they'll allocate to any particular course of action.

yeah, I've got plenty of white bits, I wasn't really planning on spending any more on this model as I still have an advent calendar to buy and a very limited budget. And also, I do have a lego store nearby, so I could possibly get bricks in the pick and mix and save on shipping if I were to buy - though I accept that limits my options.

Anyway, immaterial: the issue is making these sheep with what I have. Ah, if only this was next year when lego had released their windmill with the rumoured sheep... I'm sad enough that I can't use my beautiful pig in the MOC, what with the jews having... issues... with pork.

Given the images, I still can't quite see how the head was attached, though. At first I was thinking it was a black 1x1 plate with a vertical clip, holding onto the white horizontal clip, but I'm not sure that would allow space to attach the minifig hands. How's that part working?

Actually, that's exactly how it works. And it's a lot sturdier than most hand-to-plate connections. Trust me, I work with those a lot.

Shave a sheep has been out in the UK for ages!

It's named Wild Wool in America

Just as the British Discovery show "Scrapheap Challenge" had to change to "Junkyard Megawars" when it went west.

Sorry to update a deadish topic, but that's the design I finally went for. Thanks to everyone for all their help - three of those are now gracing my shepherd's pastures!

Also, sorry for taking it on my webcam - I have no access to a decent camera just now. The full MoC will be photographed soon, though - and properly.

One of the three kings is on an elephant. Just slight overkill there, I fancy.
