SilentMode Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Keeping things rolling (no pun intended) and moving forward... I had a go at building a SUV, which is six studs wide and has space inside for three minifigures. Most of the already built SUVs I've seen online are either four studs wide, or don't have enough room inside for figures. Adding to the difficulty is that most of the available windscreens are four studs wide. Anyhow, this is my first attempt at a completely blacked-up vehicle: While it looks okay (although not really like an SUV), I've since had to change the front and back windows to transparent black, which makes the vehicle look more like a taxi cab. Updated pictures to come later. Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Very nice LDD creation 'SilentMode', are you going to brick-build it ? I'm a conformist! ! Quote
SilentMode Posted November 9, 2010 Author Posted November 9, 2010 Very nice LDD creation 'SilentMode', are you going to brick-build it ? I'm a conformist! ! Thanks lightningtiger... I'm planning on building four of them; just have to find out how many of the pieces I have already. Quote
DRM Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Looks okay to me, like a Range Rover, all be it a Drug Dealer's. If there is any way to shorten it by a stud or two it may look more like you want it. Mark. Quote
LegoSjaak Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 There is a nice SUV in the Lego-set 7635. It's the set with horse and trailer..and this SUV looks great. It looks most like an Englisch Landrover discovery or something... just have a look.. it's really great ! Yours is also nice, although it is a little long.. its a kind of SUV-van... SilentMode Posted November 9, 2010 Author Posted November 9, 2010 Point taken guys: I'll see if I can reduce the length of the vehicle when I get home tonight. It should definitely be possible, even though the challenge is to fit three figures inside. Thanks for the feedback! Quote
kyphur Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Maybe try it with larger tires also, I've always wondered why someone would buy an SUV with small tires. Even my Ford Escape (a smaller SUV) has 17 inch tires, they don't look good with 15 inch tires and I'll never understand why they would be sold like that. Quote
Fuzzylegobricks Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 can you post the ldd file? my email: finnlovesham@gmail.com keep your awesome designing up! Quote
rriggs Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 I think it looks like a taxi because the cabin part of the body is too long compared to the bonnet and because the body is not raised. On an SUV there should be a good sized gap between the tyres and the wheel arches which you are missing. Cheers Rog Quote
Ralph_S Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 I agree with Kyphur that the tyres look a tad small compared to the size of the vehicle. I know LEGO use these tyres for anything from a regular sedan to trucks, but to me they look odd on something this big. Rog is right too. If you'd raise the body (including the mudguards) by at least on plate, it would look more like an SUV. I tend to build minifig scale vehicles a bit smaller than this including a Chevy Suburban. I'd still call it six wide, though, but I include the mudguards. I'd call yours seven studs wide). Because it's smaller, the wheels look about right and it does have bigger gap between the top of the tyre and the mudguard. It doesn't seat 3 minifigs , however, although I could probably rework it to fit two. Building minifig scale vehicles that can seat multiple figures generally requires compromises in terms of scale and shape that I am not willing to make. Cheers, Ralph Quote
SilentMode Posted November 9, 2010 Author Posted November 9, 2010 A couple of hours rebuilding the model, and we have this bad boy: I've had to get rid of my precious mudguards in favour of larger wheels and tyres. This also had the benefit of giving the vehicle a good amount of clearance from the ground - funny how these things work out! Although the vehicle is significantly taller now, I've also managed to reduce the length. I liked the drug cartel van look, and it was similar to what I was going for, but this version would be more vanilla. Amazingly, as you can see, it still houses three figures. I've also included the LXF files for anyone who wants them, and hopefully someone can improve on either model (and show the results!). It wasn't easy to build, but I've hopefully laid some kind of foundation. Mark 1 (the first set of pictures) Mark 3 (this one) Quote
shutinc Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Excellent car! It looks a lot like the ones you see in the movies :) Great work! Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Nice LDD design SilentMode! I like the all-black finish a lot. The second design looks better and 'badder' IMO. Quote
SilentMode Posted November 10, 2010 Author Posted November 10, 2010 Glad you guys like it! Construction has begun on these limited-edition models. Quote
buddy Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Good MOC, SilentMode! I like the latest version best, it looks more like a SUV than the previous version. I can't wait to see pics of these in real life. Well done. ~buddy~ Quote
