Oky Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 (edited) Hello there. As the title says, this is my entry for the CubeDude contest on FBTB. It's Spider-Dude versus three of his most dangerous enemies: Doctor Cubicus, Venom-Dude, and the Green Cubelin! Spider-Dude, Spider-Dude, Does whatever a CubeDude can Spins a web, any size, Catches thieves just like flies Look Out! Here comes the Spider-Dude. The vig from all angles: Some straight-on shots to show that there is no overhang (one of the requirements for the contest). A close-up of the Spidey battling Doc Ock and and Venom simultaneously! Here are the Amazing Spider-Dude and his foes on their own! The Spidey and Venom designs are based on those by MacLane (Spidey, Venom), but mine are a little different. Spidey is dark blue and has more triangular eyes, and venom has a much cooler mouth. Here's Gobby on his shiney glider! The dangerous Doc Ock, er, Cube! I based his design on Alfred Molina's brilliant portrayal of him in Spider-Man 2. Unfortunately I didn't have the right parts in green or brown, so I had to settle for black for the color of his coat, but he looks good nonetheless, I think. Here is the scene without the CubeDudes and vehicles. Since Marvel is owned by Disney now, no comic is safe from ads for other Disney products. Well, at least it's PoP and not Hannah Montana! And just for fun (by request of Jammiedodger), here's a little moment:"DOCTOR OCTOGONAPUS! BLAAAARGH!" You can find hi-res versions of these pics in this brickshelf folder and my Flickr. Please let me know what you think! And don't forget to vote! Edited October 31, 2010 by Oky Wan Kenobi Quote
Admiral Ron Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 Wow! I must say, they look almost real...except cubish But seriously, those are great! the only thing I could even think of changing was perhaps put a spider on Spider-dude's chest? I am not sure if one is supposed to be there, but it might look a little cooler. Keep up the great work! Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 This is a great entry Oky! Already looks like a a winner to me. I agree a spider on Spider-Dude's chest would be a good addition. Also if you could make Doctor Cubicus' eye goggles 1x1 round plates instead of the square plates (?). Besides that, I can't find any more faults. I wish you the best of luck in the contest! Quote
Oky Posted October 28, 2010 Author Posted October 28, 2010 Wow! I am not sure if one is supposed to be there, but it might look a little cooler. Keep up the great work! Thanks. Yes, there's supposed to be a spider, but it's just a small one. The spider piece would be too big and voluminous. And the only 1x1 tile with a spider printed on it is sand green, so that wouldn't work either. Therefore, I think the black stud I used is the best solution. This is a great entry Oky! Thanks to you too! The problem with using round plates for Ock's glasses (not goggles - this is supposed to be the movie version ) is that they might stand out too much or look too googly. Plus using squares enables me to angle them and make it looks as if he's angry. But maybe I'll try it. Keep the suggestions coming! Quote
Flare Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 Whoa! Those cube dudes are awesome, your sure to win! I don't have any advice really, I'm really a noob at cubedudes Quote
gondortoast Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 WOW! thats pretty cool oky , I especially like the snake for venems tougue, thats really rather ingenious. I like cube dudes they make it fun to be square or errrr... cuboids Quote
CorneliusMurdock Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 You've got my vote. The cubedudes themselves are very accurate and awesome. You've also managed to put them all in such a tiny scene without them looking all crammed in or blocking out all the detail of the vignette. Quote
Masked Builder Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 Whoa! Those are sweet! I'm really diggin Spider man and Doc Ock Quote
kyphur Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 (edited) Looks real good, the only question I have is about Spidey's WEB- Is it official Lego string? The contest is limited to official parts and I'd hate to see a great entry DQed over something so minor... Also, on closer inspection it looks like Doc Ock's Claw that attaches to the wall needs to be adjusted as "no overhang" is also in the rules. Edited October 28, 2010 by kyphur Quote
Vindicare Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 Those are awesome! I too think the black stud is suffice enough for a spider on his costume. The spider piece would be too big and fat for it. I was thinking of an idea for a brick built, but it might be too big for his chest, too. I think the villains look good as they are now. Quote
Oky Posted October 28, 2010 Author Posted October 28, 2010 WOW! thats pretty cool oky , I especially like the snake for venems tougue, thats really rather ingenious. Thanks, but I can't take the credit for that as I just copied it from MacLane's design. Spidey is based on his design too, but mine is a little different. Looks real good, the only question I have is about Spidey's WEB- Is it official Lego string? The contest is limited to official parts and I'd hate to see a great entry DQed over something so minor... Yes, it's a bungee cord from 8205 Bungee Blaster. Also, on closer inspection it looks like Doc Ock's Claw that attaches to the wall needs to be adjusted as "no overhang" is also in the rules. Is it really that big of a deal? It only overhangs by a few millimeters. I'm more worried about Spidey's head overhanging too much. Do you think it is? Quote

Do you think it is? I think it might, but if you could get a picture of it straight on (to see how much it actually is overhanging or a direct overhead shot it would be easier to tell. Quote
Darth Yogi Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 Wow! Those cube dudes look awesome. My favorite is the green goblin. good luck in the contest Great job Quote

Do you think it is? Wouldn't you rather just move it over 1 brick and not overhang than risk getting DQed for such a small issue? Quote
Oky Posted October 29, 2010 Author Posted October 29, 2010 I don't want him to block the view on Doc Ock too much, so I'm trying to make it work as it is, but maybe you're right. Quote
Ras 74 Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 Let me know what I think?? It is an awesome creation Oky!! Those villans and Spiderman himself is very, very good! I am almost in love with your creation Good luck in the contest! Quote
Randal Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 You have shown me that cube dudes can be put in action and not be just desktop curiosities keeping guard over the paper clips and showing up your cubical mates dopey sports bobble heads. This is a pretty cool diorama. I should put some cube dudes in Brick... Quote
Big Cam Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 I was about to say how amazing this is. (which it is) But then I saw you wanted critisism/advice. Doc Oc and Goclin both look fantastic, but Spiderman and Venom are kind of hard to see and make out. When O study the picture I'm able to see them better, and this may be a limitation of the cube design, but maybe move those two higher up so it's asier to see them? It's not a real big deal, especially if you can link to higher res pictures. But that was my only thing to address, otherwise, I'm blown away by how good they look. Quote
Mrlegoninja Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 They all are pretty good. Nice work. Quote
Oky Posted October 31, 2010 Author Posted October 31, 2010 Thanks for the comments everyone! I have decided to mostly keep the vig as it is, though I did try to pose Spidey more so that he clearly doesn't overhang the base. I have entered it and there doesn't seem to be a problem, so wish me luck! I have updated the first post with a bunch of better pics, including close-ups and a humorous parting shot, so please take another look and let me know what you think of it now! And don't forget to vote! Quote
Batbrick Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 Fantastic creation Oky, while the building is pretty standard the look of the characters and how they are positioned is brilliant! I especially love the snake-for-a-tongue on Venom, I'd never have thought of that. The Goblin design is my personal favourite, and an excellent choice with the pumpkin he's wielding. My only real criticisms are that Spidey and Venom don't really look right from certain angles, and the whole building appears to be leaning forward a touch. But overall I really enjoyed looking at this, I hope you do.did well Batbrick Away! Quote
Skrytsson Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Really great creation! I do really like Doc Ock! Quote
Tyleraf Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Love your Doctor Cubicus! Also the rest look great as well. Quote
buddy Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Great cubedudes! They all look very accurate to the characters they are meant to be. My favourite is the Goblin, it is just perfect. Very well done. ~buddy~ Quote
