Hello everyone,

I'm hoping for a little help from you all. My son has some Lego sets and he is expanding every chance he has. But since all the lego we have is part of a set, I cannot MOC with it. I know there are basic sets that lego sells, but I'm looking at ebay and bricklink too. I have found these links at the local dutch marketplace. What do you think is a set worth and all of them together? The sets are approx. 10 years old:

Set 1

Set 2

Set 3

And then there is this second hand, but complete police truck (7743):

Truck:

I'm really hoping for help here. I'm new to this and have to learn to estimate the value of even basic items.

Only the first two links are working for the mixed Lego (Set 1 & Set 2). I think both of those are very expensive, they are old, basic coloured, and basic bricks, they are far to expensive at 65 Euro.

It seems the starting price for the 7743 set is 30 Euro? I would have thought it is priced new similar to the UK, so I think that is to expensive. The new set probably still in the shops will be very similar to 30 Euros?

I would not really recommend the basic brick boxes/ buckets from Lego, unless you see them on a good sale. They contain just basic bricks, and not the good bricks you would get in the City sets. Of course if you see them discounted 25%+, then they are well worth buying.

My advice is too go to flea markets or go shopping when a clearance sale is on at a department or toy store for cheap sets to use there parts for your MOC's.

Now we are getting a better police truck next year, and I believe you are lucky if you're in Holland some shops might have it before the end of this year, so keep your eyes out.

Thanks mikey and lightningtiger!

I have fixed the link to the third set. If I could buy all three sets for EUR 65,- would it be worth it then? What would you guys give for it, or isn't it interesting at all?

The cheapest for the 7743 I could find was EUR 37,- I did a bid on it for EUR 20,- If I could get it for that price, would it be worth it? Although I didn't realize that there would be another police truck next year. Maybe I have to check what's new in 2011 right, lol. I saw a thread about it but didn't look before. I was more wowing all the moc's here at the forum... Lol. Well, maybe intesting for the part's then, as one of you stated?

And about those basic sets. They are not the same color? I mean, the police blue isn't the same as the basic bricks blue and the fire red isn't the same as the basic brick's red? Holy, I just assumed... Thank's for mentioning... I'm such a noob...

I will go check flea markets also then. Thanks for the tip!

Hope to hear from you soon on the price for EUR 65,- for all three sets and EUR 20,- for the police truck.

I don't think those mixed lots contain useful bricks for you and your son to use, as they are all very basic pieces. I would say that these are older than 10 years (with a bag of very old wheels and some windows which are now probably collectors items), or that the good pieces have been picked out already. If you are wanting to create MOC which will fit into your city, then these pieces are not the interesting pieces that the recent sets are built with.

The 7743 set for 20 Euro is a fair price, and will give you pieces that you will easily incorporate into your city.

The colours in the Brick Buckets/ Boxes are the same as in sets, but the problem is that the pieces are just basic bricks. These are useful to you, but you will also need lots of the different and more interesting pieces which you find in sets. So thats why I would say not to buy them unless you are getting a good discount. I don't know if you had Lego as a child, but if you did, you will see that there are many more interesting pieces available now, which you will be wanting to use so that your MOC blend in with the sets you have.

Still keep looking for mixed lots, and maybe compare them with the types of pieces you would find in a set you have bought, to see if they will be useful for you. Also search out clearance and discount sales at shops to get recent sets to use. If you are patient and keep a track on your local shops and those online constantly, you are sure to find some bargains.

Ok Mickey,

Then it's a no for these mixed lots. Thanks. If I can get my hands on the police station I will then... Even if it's only for the parts to start moc-ing.

I might need some buckets of those basic sets then, because I have no spare bricks what so ever. I did find a few shops here in the Netherlands who provide seperate bricks / landscape items / animals / Food etc. The links are:

Brickshop Parts and ebricks. What do you think, good sources for other parts?

Thanks for your advice! :classic: :classic: And for the moderator who moved this post. I will look more carefully the next time where I will post my thread. I'm sorry...

Hi uitzetter,

To get a good idea of what a lot is worth you could try comparing prices on Bricklink. You can look at the price guide and it tells you what other people have paid for the set/part over the last six months and how often it was sold.

Hi, thanks! I will have to look at Bricklink again I see. I didn't notice the price guide. I was only looking for sets to buy. I didn't notice that there was a price history available! This is getting better and better.

I'm sorry for all the noob questions, but I have to say, all you guys have been so very kind to answer them and helped me what to look for, what not, where to find them, what digital tools can be used, how I can play with adding trains etc. etc. And that has happened in only a couple of days! It really amazing. A new world has opened up for me! So thanks again and I will check the price guide

Hi uitzetter,

Take it from me, those prices on Marktplaats are way to high. The best places to buy secondhand is fleemarkets and bricklink. Just be carefull at fleemarkets because there's a lot of people who do this for a living, and overrate the prices on lego. Recently I bought 4 powerminer sets for just 17 € on a fleemarket ( was 35 ), but also saw a lot of overpriced lego there. just try to bargen with them, if they ask 10, drop to 5 , and if you hackle a bit, you can always get it cheaper.

Bricklink works better if you want a lot of identycal parts fast, and ( realative) cheap , search for the cheapest or the one close to it and look out what there saying in there store therms, some buyers ad saletax or V.A.T to buyers outside of there country, those are people doing it for the money.

Last bricklink tip : If you buy something out of the U.S , ask them to send it marked "gift" or you'll end up paying dutch customs afterall. ( happend to me in 2 separate ocassions.

If you want more advise, just PM / email me, I'm also dutch :sweet:
