Paul B Technic Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 (edited) I am thinking of starting to offer a service as below, do you think it would be worth it and would many people be interested in using such a service? Paul Lego Model Service Guide October 2010 This document outlines the standard service procedures and tasks I offer to undertake on Lego models (mostly Technic). This services is “free of charge” except for the cost of parts and return postage if required. Where possible good quality second hand parts will be used and these will be charged at 50% of the “new” part price, where new parts need to be used I will confirm the total cost with the owner first and charge the parts at cost price. Below I have listed as an example the tasks I would undertake on Lego Technic set 8436 1) Check overall condition of model and note any damaged / worn / missing parts. 2) Check front of cabin / frame and clean all surfaces, confirm steering works as expected, remove cabin and clean inside / outside of cabin. Check lights/ mirrors and replace parts as needed. 3) Test movement of wheels and function of V6 engine, confirm all pistons work and check diff / drive line / gears for correct operation. Clean all exposed surfaces. Remove engine block from frame and remove pistons / crank arms, clean all surfaces, replace parts as need. Examine transmission / drive line gears and replace as needed. 4) Remove front wheels and examine for signs of wear / damage, check steering linkage and gears, replace as needed. Clean tires / wheels and steering components. 5) Check front half of frame for signs of wear / damage, clean all exposed surfaces. 6) Remove rear wheels and examine for signs of wear / damage, check axels and replace as needed. Clean tires / wheels. 7) Check operation of turn table / crane arm. Note times for full operation. Remove turn table. Check for signs of wear / damage to turntable and replace as needed. 8- Check rear half of frame for signs of wear / damage, clean all exposed surfaces. 9) Check all Pneumatics including pump, cylinders and tubing for wear or damage, replace as needed. Clean all exposed surfaces. 10) Check arm for wear / damage, replace parts as needed. Clean all exposed surfaces. 11) Check rear of model / frame and clean all surfaces, check lights/ mirrors and replace parts as needed. 12) Rebuild model and clean all exposed surfaces not covered above. 13) Package up model to return to owner, arrange payment for any parts used. bricked one Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 (edited) So basically, take apart, clean, fix(replace as needed), and put back together. (you need to fix the link) Edited September 30, 2010 by bricked one Quote
Paul B Technic Posted September 30, 2010 Author Posted September 30, 2010 So basically, take apart, clean, fix(replace as needed), and put back together. (you need to fix the link) Yes basically that is what I was thinking, I just don't know if anybody else would be interested in such a service. Paul Quote
bricked one Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 ELSE!?! Who said i was interested? -And wouldn't you lose money doing the service? -And will i get the (bad) pieces back that you have replaced? -And someone could easily send you 10 random pieces(in 8463) and call it 8436 and get the rest of the pieces 50% off. -And how do we know we'll get our Lego set back? -And could we send our MOCS to be serviced(with instructions of course)? But the question is, do you want to do this service of yours? Quote

I meant "anybody else" as in anybody other then me :) Models would have to be mostly complete and I would not accept models with large amounts of parts missing. My reason for offering this service is that I quite enjoy stripping down models and cleaning / repairing them. Paul Quote
Superkalle Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 Interesting idea. I guess the best way to know if there are any potential customers is to try. You could put an ad up on billboards in your area, in local toyshops, or in in your local newspaper - just to see if anyone responds. What were you thinking of charging? Quote
roamingstop Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 Interesting idea. I guess the best way to know if there are any potential customers is to try. You could put an ad up on billboards in your area, in local toyshops, or in in your local newspaper - just to see if anyone responds. What were you thinking of charging? Repair, clean, rebuild, and replace? Replace - at whose cost? Yours? Senders? How to arrange minimal Bricklink charges etc? Repair - how? If replacing - see above. Rebuild - this is part of the fun of having a second hand set.... Clean - is this really a realistic of a "service"? Getting rid of the grime from odd places using an ultrasonic bath would be nice... Clean P2- whitening dirty parts from old sets? To be honest this is not a service I would consider as being able to make money, or even break even. Probably best to contact your local LUG and see if anyone in your country (minimal post costs) is interested. One possible way: Send me your incomplete sets, and you will get return a cleaned, complete system. But once again who pays for the missing bits? Other alternative idea: Send me your MOC and I will generate PDF instructions for you... and check the build status - structural, ease of assembly etc. Now that could be more interesting. Quote
Lego Otaku Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 I'll accept your offer. One of my model needs oil change. Oh you were offering to fix Lego model and not an actual car? Quote
