This is the first time I have touched Lego in 9 years.

I got this set yesterday and spent 5 hours putting it together over a span of 8 hours.

I missed a few gears when I realized something wasnt working right after i was done putting together, luckily with some careful prying apart of some pieces and the help of a few screwdrivers, I was able to put the 2 gears in without tearing apart the whole arm lift section.

There were a few extra pieces when I was done, but I was able to find a place for them since I dont have any containers for holding lego pieces..yet.

(In this image, you can see a few extra pieces that where in the box after completion)

I also recorded the build process, it is a 5 hour video that I am currently working on to compress it into a much much smaller timeframe, this compression started this morning and it is only just halfway done, I fear that I will not be awake when it finishes.

Finally received this set yesterday, gonna build it today. Planning on upgrading it to look and behave more like the venerable 8421 (should have at least a three section boom!). It also has to be motorized completely, ofcourse

here is the video of the build process:

You have throw many pieces in one box.... that costs pretty much grinding/search time, exspecially many small pieces.

If you buy for example toolcase with many boxes inside, you save more time, perhaps one hour!

This is good example:

or with bigger room

or with customizable areas

I've built both the A and B models this week. I have to say I'm quite disappointed with the A model, it looks OK but the functionality is quite poor. Hoisting or moving the beam requires a lot of knob turning, and gets boring quickly. A motor is really required here.. The outriggers are also extremely flimsy, and there are some odd design choices in both the chassis and the superstructure. The boom also only has 2 sections, and doesn't use any imaginative techniques. And no driving axle or engine? Boo!

I was pleasantly surprised by the B model (a gantry crane) though, which looks great and is also fun to build. It can't really lift heavy loads due to lack of counterweight (you can add some yourself though), but it's altogether a much better model. If you buy the 8053, do it for the parts or the B model.

Grades:

A-model: 6/10

B-model: 8/10
