I bet Lego's Design Lab has a 3D printer, or will very soon, just for this purpose.

It already is affordable and you can buy custom parts made by others or design your own and have this place print them for you. A search for LEGO turned up 492 parts. Mainly minifig related, but some interesting bricks there as well.

I haven't had any LEGO printed by them, but I have had some scupltures I made in Sculptris printed and they were quite amazing.
