vexorian Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 I was finally able to remember the name of the brand I saw in a hidden toy store the other day, woma. They had many sets on display, specially mechs that looked like this: And also military sets that reminded me of oxford reviews but didn't seem like exact copies. The plastic seemed ok at first glance, probably slightly behind in quality than mega bloks, though I can't say much without feeling it directly and trying to interlock with LEGO. The people at the toy store were obviously pretty proud of them as the models filled a whole display and the display is the first thing you see when looking into the store. The design of the mechs specially seemed cool to me but I will probably save till September as I have really spent a lot on LEGO this month (yet the first half has not even finished). Anyway, it is a Chinese company (http://woma.cc/newEbiz1/EbizPortalFG/portal/html/index.html) and I've been wondering if it is actually a bootleg. That because even though the designs are not from LEGO they could have been stolen from Mega bloks or oxford as I am not really familiar with those sets. The minifigs look a lot like oxford's. That site has plenty of pics from many sets, the mechs are somewhere in the "Juvenile series \ Robot Series" section I would provide a link but the site does not work like that. Quote
prateek Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 Wow, this is a bootleg MegaBloks set from a few years back. How low can you go... Quote

prateek Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 Hey thanks. Do you know the name of the set/theme? I don't remember the name of the theme, but I do have a smaller mech that is tan with trans red accents. It also came with paint to paint the camouflage patterns on. Quote
Chaucey Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 I've seen a set from this company WOMA being sold online in my country. It is a pizzeria set and actually looks quite attractive. Not sure on the quality though! Pretty cheap at only $20 NZD (around $14 or 15 USD) I'm not sure where the design comes from - Lego have made a pizzeria, but it is a lot smaller, so I'm not sure that there is a link to that specific set. Clearly the little yellow faced minifigures show where their inspiration came from. Quote
Thrund Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 (edited) I'm not sure where the design comes from - Lego have made a pizzeria, but it is a lot smaller, so I'm not sure that there is a link to that specific set. Clearly the little yellow faced minifigures show where their inspiration came from. That set looks a lot like the old-style Construblock sets, which in turn may have been based on old Oxford sets. The yellow faces and hands with curve-over hips and shaped legs are the Oxford minifig design, and the colour choices and vehicle designs resemble the ones in the Construblock sets. Examples If it's the same factory that is now doing the current Construblock sets, then the plastic quality is quite good but I had some issues with the clutch/tolerance on the larger pieces. Edit: I think WOMA are a distributor rather than a manufacturer, because their ranges don't all have the same kind of minifigs. Their military sets (and the minifigs marching across the top of the webpage) are the straight-armed ones that Coko Bloko used to do. So the actual sets are probably all bootlegs from anonymous manufacturers in China and the quality may vary a lot between ranges. Edited August 14, 2010 by Thrund Quote

Yes, I've just looked at the Woma website http://www.woma-cn.com/BRICKS/small.asp and I can see they have a matching set with Construbricks for a mechanics workshop. Good figuring out Thrund. On their website they do mention having a factory - but who knows really. They only seem to have a few of those detailed sets, and their other stuff is basic brick styles. They have a younger kids duplo look range too, although some figures are duplo like and others are quite different (old duplo style? another style?) Anyway - I haven't been able to resist that Pizza parlor, so when it arrives I shall report back on quality. Quote

If they're bootlegging the same place that Sluban is being made, then it's probably sluban quality which isn't good. Terrible figures, and clutch issues. If you get it, I'd appreciate some close pictures to get an idea of the quality. Quote
vexorian Posted August 15, 2010 Author Posted August 15, 2010 I'll try getting one of the mechs I saw in September as an experiment*. With some luck I'll try a review if not just some pics and opinions of the quality. Again, The plastic quality didn't seem terribly awful at first sight but I can't be sure without really touching the bricks. I don't really have my hopes up now that I know it is a bootleg, in fact, I am not sure I like the idea of rewarding such behavior with a purchase. * Unless someone makes a good review before I am able to purchase it and the plastic quality is proven terrible. lightningtiger Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Crazy clones of clone sets ? The designing is just too simple, check out the figure with the odd sized hand cart....... MEH ! I think they need invest in more parts to make it look half desent ! You know there should be a contest, take these clone designs and build them, improve them out of LEGO for real ! I'm a conformist! ! Quote
crossmr Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 (edited) Crazy clones of clone sets ? Yes, because contrary to some people's insistence Oxford is actually of pretty high quality. Both in brick and design. A lot of Chinese manufacturers bootleg their sets, as much as they bootleg Lego. The designing is just too simple, check out the figure with the odd sized hand cart....... This is quite an old set design. A lot of manufacturers are bootlegging old sets that Oxford doesn't make anymore. Edited August 15, 2010 by crossmr Quote
