RoryoCox Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 Over the last few months I have become really interested in the Pirates theme and I think I am now ready to attempt my first ship. What I want to know is what to buy e.g. Hull pieces and other necessary pieces. As this would be my first I would want to make sure I order all the right pieces. Some information would greatly help me to start this ship. I have seen a few pieces that I will need but some smaller pieces and specialized pieces that I need I have no idea about. Thank You, Burman Quote
KotZ Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 I've only built one ship so far, but I do have good ideas on what you need. Hull parts: but you need to choose what kind you want, the old hulls, or new hulls. They make all the difference. Or if you even want to do a brick-built hull. Tumblehome: there are a few ways to achieve this, with either sloping bricks, or having hinge pieces. Rigging: Do you want official parts, or do it yourself? Cannons and crew: This comes last, but they help plan on the size of your ship. But really, just look around the forums and you'll fin inspiration. CGH has a wonderful guide to build a frigate, and look at Le Fouregeux (spelling?) or the HMS Unicorn. Look in the indexes as well. Hope this helps!! Quote
RoryoCox Posted August 11, 2010 Author Posted August 11, 2010 Thanks for the reply. I was thinking of getting the following parts- x5 x4 x3 All of them in Reddish Brown. I will probably get many others as well but above would be what I need for the ship hull. Quote
Captain Genaro Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 It's always great to see another ship being built. Just a few words of advice, For the second picture, you only need two of them if you are building one ship. Those are the bow and stern pieces. As for the last picture, you only want 2 not 3. If you have 3 then your bow or stern will look too tall. You will also need some 2x4 to conect the pieces (I''m guessing that you have them) and some plates are a good idea to help hold it together. If you have some money and time, look at CGH frigate manual, it's a great reasource and is very helpful. Quote
RoryoCox Posted August 11, 2010 Author Posted August 11, 2010 Thanks for the advice. The reason I put done more than I need is if I plan to build another ship I would already have the pieces. Quote

Trick is to first decide on what type of ship you want to make, a brig, frigate or maybe even a huge ship of the line. Do some research, get some pictures, read a book and sketch up your plans. Then you'll know what to get in bricks. Quote

Tycho McKorley Posted August 12, 2010 Posted August 12, 2010 I don't know what you're planning to build exactly, but I've found in my most recent attempt to build a ship that brown or reddish brown tiles are very, very helpful. If you get an assortment of 1 x 4, 1 x 6, 1 x 2, and 1 x 1 tiles you should be able to make a very nice looking "deck." That's just a thought though. Quote
Captain Becker Posted August 12, 2010 Posted August 12, 2010 Aye, i think at if you are gonna do it like CB/GH, you would need old bow pieces. (I would use those than those modern ones) But thats up to you, and i would try to make my first ship as a sloop couse the big ships can be pretty hard ones if you do it at the first time and you havent pieces (The list can be found on CB/GH`s tutorial) But i wish you the best of luck for this. I hope see the progress near days. And i guess it is for the french and not the british aye? Captain Becker Quote
