DLuders Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Has anyone ever gone to a retail store to buy LEGO TECHNIC, and has gazed at the nearby MEGA Bloks sets? Some of those sets would be nice to reproduce in Lego bricks. The US$40, 555-piece "Leopard 2 Tank" ( http://www.megabrands.com/Shop/MEGA_Bloks/Probuilder/Leopard_2_Tank_3251/ ) is an example; we all know that TLG will NEVER produce a battle tank set because of corporate philosophy. I know that Lego AFOLs think that MEGA Bloks parts are of inferior quality, are a "rip-off" of the Lego building idea, etc., but I'm asking this question anyway. Has anybody ever downloaded the MEGA Bloks Probuilder building instructions and created those sets using real Lego pieces? I realize that there are unique MEGA Bloks parts, but perhaps one could substitute some LEGO-brand parts to make them. Here is the download webpage: http://www.megabrands.com/en/customerservice/instructions.php?brandSelect=1&dir=customerservice&level=3&level2=3 Your thoughts and opinions? Is this "Lego heresy"? Quote
vexorian Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Hmnn, to my understanding although the patents on the basic bricks have expired, there are still many parts that are under patents and thus mega can't use many of the ones in LEGO's inventory. Which leads them to make their own parts (and patent them). When you take a look at the correctly-designed (not PoTC) megabloks sets, the basic bricks and slopes are the same as TLG's but the more advanced parts like things used by SNOT and movement are different. My point is that although you can probably reproduce the exterior of the tank, the interior may require megabloks-exclusive pieces. Quote
Milan Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 That is nice tank. I think it could be reproduced quite good with LEGO pieces. There are quite few tanks made from LEGO on net already, many are very good, but this one is particularly nice, imo. Quote
Ralph_S Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 (edited) I have never gone and bought a mega bloks set, but several years ago they did release what I thought was a really nice set: a fire engine based on those used by the New York Fire Department. It obviously has a lot of parts for which there are no LEGO equivalents and, as an AFOL I'd rather build my own design than something from somebody else's instructions, but it certainly was an inspiration for building my own. Their M1 Abrams set wasn't all that horrible either, but I still much prefer my own. Cheers, Ralph Edited August 1, 2010 by Ralph_S Quote
paul_delahaye Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 I consider Mega Blocks to be scum of the earth, I would not gaze or even consider touching them Paul Quote
eMHa Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 This is the first time I see this. Good thing is that it is compatible with LEGO bricks. But after looking on some of the models I must know what I love with LEGO bricks: There're not much specialised bricks, so you can build mostly all sets but if you only have a few sets! With this MEGA* thing you have specialised parts in every set! And so you aren't able to build another set if you don't have it! I more like the idea to have few different parts to build all I can imagine! Quote
Sam42 Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 DEATH TO MEGA BLOKS AND ALL WHO BUILD WITH THEM! Quote
Jurgen Krooshoop Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 With this MEGA* thing you have specialised parts in every set! And so you aren't able to build another set if you don't have it! That's the beaty of Lego, you can create almost everything, With M**B** you can't. And there aren't any technic parts in these models either. The "Atom-cube" which is used in the tank is totally ridiculous. It's nothing more than a brick with built-in bevel-gears. Man, do these people underestimate children in thinking that they can't assemble a gearing-system. Lego Technic proves they (and we) can. Quote
DLuders Posted May 27, 2011 Author Posted May 27, 2011 (edited) On his Brickshelf gallery, TecWolf posted Building Instructions for the "Lego Version of Mega Bloks 96807" (the UNSC HALO Scorpion tank). He posted a .DAT file there too. The instructions have been compiled into a single 6-MB PDF document available here via MegaUpload SkyDrive. Edited February 8, 2012 by DLuders Quote

Piratedave84 Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 I don't think this post was made to bash on M**A B****S but to ascertain the feasibility of making the Leopard II in bricks. I spent the last 1/2 hour or so comparing the parts list in the instructions with bricklink and can say that it would totally be possible and in fact make one awesome looking MOC. There are however some GIANT SNOT pieces: And this : A magic cube that controls (or seems to) 3 axis in one ... Interesting My 2 cents!! Pirate Quote
robuko Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 (edited) DLuders, thankyou very much for the link, Mega does not really have good distribution here so I did not know about the pro builder sets. The Endeavour Shuttle looks interesting. Some of the Halo sets are good too. I wonder why this doesn't have the Gundam sets like Zaku, I would like to see the instructions for these. Just noticed the Mega Cars 2 range. Anyone done a head-to-head vs Duplo? Rob Edited May 28, 2011 by robuko Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 I saw a backhoe, dumper, and wheeled excavator in a shop i dont know how made it :probiulder, magabuilder constutoblox:blush: maymay David luders can help find it. Quote
Plastic Nurak Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 That 'magic cube' (LOL) it's a crap, with our beloved and superior Lego Technic and its gears and axles we can do a by far superior working mechanism. Quote
