I've only recently got back into lego, but I've already realised I need to sort my lego pieces out, otherwise I will spend most of the build time looking for the right piece. *huh* At the moment my lego pieces are only sorted by colour, so there is a complete mix of different sized pieces, lego and technic together, tiny pegs with large plates all in one place.

I don't have much space to store pieces, so the idea at the moment is to buy several of these and some larger containers for bricks and large plates.

So the question I'm asking is how do you sort your lego? Do you have every type of piece separate from each other or keep types together e.g. plates are kept together? Or do you keep them mixed up?

A quick search of the forum will yield this thread, which is also a pinned topic.

Yes I think I should have noticed that  I did do a search though and nothing came up. Don't blame me, I'm new, feel free to close this thread.

Hi Adam

I don't know if I'll help you a lot but here is what I do:

I have boxes like yours for small parts (1x1), minifigs accessories and some plates.

I prefer sorting out my parts by form, ex: 2x6 plates, 1x2 bricks etc.

When I don't own lot of a certain part, I make a group of parts which have a similar function, for example every little part (1x1) that has a connection clip.

Actually, I NEVER sort by color (so I don't have a mix of simple black bricks with black technic connectors or else) because I think it's easier for your brain to find the colour of your choice in a pile of similar parts than to find one particuliar form in an all blue or yellow bin.

Because my collection is very very small, I store all the parts that don't have too much friends similar to them in a drawer ( a cheap plastic box from any supermarket, with 3 or more drawers).

So yes, I have some drawers full of very different parts mixed up together, but as they are very specific parts it's easy to spot one in the mess.

For the basic plates and bricks, they are sorted out in a box like that. I sometimes clip similar bricks all together.

Well hum ok now I'm realizing that my collection may look like a real mess to you, but keep in mind that the better way to do it is your own way! (since you can find what you are searching when you want it)

...or you could use this thread, which I should have noticed too
