ZO6 Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 I don't limit myself to the amount of themes or sets that I collect. If I come across something that appeals to me, I'll pick it up. I got my first Lego set 20 years ago, and every year I manage to acquire sets from a wide variety of themes. I don't necessarily go out of my way to grab a set from every theme just to see if it interests me or not, but often enough there is at least one set per line that jumps out at me as a must have and thus I end up with a wide variety of sets. I also don't usually go out and buy sets from a new theme right away. I like to sit back for a couple of months and see what the general consensus is, and wait for sales. While I wait to start collecting sets from new themes, I pay visits to Bricklink to track down stuff from the past that I still want. To sum up, it seems as though the amount of themes that I collect is almost always growing. While I jump on board new themes, I am always going out of my way to hunt down older stuff too. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 I guess I can officially say I've added Kingdoms to my collection. I guess that answers the question.... Quote
ThatGuyWithTheBricks Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 I almost always get SW sets, but I'm trying to move more on to classic castle and pirates. I get a few licensed sets, but I'm all for Kingdoms and SP111. When I was younger, I loved Bionicle and Adventurers. Quote
sok117 Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 I'm all for SW, I pride myself on trying to get most of the sets. I've also done pretty good with Indiana Jones, seeing as I've got most of the sets. I also like SPIII, but sadly I think I'm done with that now, I just like how it's mostly compatable with my SW collection. I don't think I'm going to start collecting Kingdoms no matter how tempting it is (and believe me I've been in a toys'r'us for a good 30 minutes deciding whether or not to buy them) I just don't think there is room in my budget for them. So as of now its pretty much SW all the way. Quote
Omega 8 Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 I collect most everything..... The last 4 (more expensive than $15) sets I've purcahsed/been given as a gift were: Lunar Limo MMV Endor Brickbeard's Bounty On my display shelf im my dining room i have, as we "speak", I have: BBB Endor AT-ST, Ewok Glider, Catapult and the pair of Speederbikes Chauchilla Cemetary Manta Warrior x2 Hyperspeed Pursuit Container Heist Raid VPR Freeze Ray Frenzy Collectible Minifig Skater MMV I have really no rhyme nor reason to my collections, I just get what I like! Cardinal Brick Posted July 21, 2010 Posted July 21, 2010 I like to think of myself as a Castle and Pirate fan but that's been slipping for a few years now, I will still pick up new sets when I see them just to keep it as close to complete as I can but I've been tempted by other thingds along the way. I keep finding intresting space sets and buying them, mostly ones I looked at as a kid and never got. I'll tend to pick up Star Wars original trillogy sets if I like them (mostly the Empires sets) but I'm not intrested in the rests. As for actions themes I've still got to finish Adventurers as there are one or two small ones I'm missing and a few diving serts. I also picked up all the agent sets as I just though they were a blast. Oh and the modual buildings though I missied out on cafe corner sadly. So basically I'm confused, I'm glad you brought this topic up, I do envy people who have a set theme and nothing else! Quote
Walter Kovacs Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Right now I only collect two themes: Star Wars and Bionicle. I have a complete collection of UFO and Exploriens, so I'm not sure if they count, since I don't need to collect them anymore. Eventually I will finish off my Exo-Force collection, but right now SW takes all of my collecting money. If I had enough spare cash, I would collect the Castle, Pirate, Harry Potter and Classic Space themes (including all of the subthemes). But that is mere idle speculation at this point. Quote
dr_spock Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 I am all over the map. I can't decide on one to collect. Town/City Creator Star Wars Pirates Creator Technics Castle Power Miners Toy Story Collectible mini-figs Quote
LegoBuilder Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 I am only coming out of the dark age. I am like getting everything that catch my eyes. But if I goes on, I would burn a big hole in my wallet. As I have a liking to building. The below theme would be my current plan to have a Lego City on my table top. 1. Modular Building (I am trying to get the whole series by start of next year. It expansive to get the older sets) 2. City Theme 3. Creator sets with houses Quote
Vindicare Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 My collection compromises of: City(as most, I'm building a city) Castle(who doesn't love knights, castles & chivalry) Creator(just houses) Atlantis Star Wars(not TOO much here, just the ships and things I like from the movies, it's hard to limit myself) Harry Potter(missed first wave, glad they're coming back) Quote
Legoist Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 I don't collect anything. My main theme is Trains, but even there I just buy sets here and there without feeling like I had to complete the set of sets. Actually my purchasing habits are quasi-random, meaning that I buy sets which I like either for the model or for the parts to use in MOCs, and (with a few exceptions) I let the randomness of sales and discounts drive my wallet. That applies to both old and new sets. Nevertheless, being focused on Trains means that at least City and Creator sets are in (Modular Houses could be in as well, but I've never bought any of them), while other themes are generally out, since they usually have a lot of parts strongly characterized. But of course, I may still get individual sets from any other theme if I think they have many useful parts. Totally aside to this, I've been thinking about buying some Castle sets and some monstrous minifigs from Atlantis, Space Police or whatever, and then use the material for RPGing. Quote
Destroydacre Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 Like a few others who have already posted, I really don't collect themes, more so just sets that are cool. Some themes do tend to have sets that I consider cooler than others, so I will buy more sets from that theme. But I rarely buy every set in a theme. Here's my Brickset breakdown for all themes. It's fairly easy to tell which themes have sets that I like the best. :) Adventurers (8 sets) Alpha Team (2 sets) Aquazone (20 sets) Atlantis (4 sets) Basic (8 sets) Belville (1 set) Bonus/Value Pack (4 sets) Books (2 sets) Bricks and More (1 set) Castle (41 sets) Classic (8 sets) Gear (2 sets) Harry Potter (13 sets) Island Xtreme Stunts (1 set) Key Chains (8 sets) LEGO Writing System (2 sets) Magnets (3 sets) Make and Create (1 set) Mindstorms (1 set) Orient Expedition (1 set) Pirates (49 sets) Rock Raiders (1 set) Service Packs (5 sets) Space (46 sets) Spider-Man (2 sets) SpongeBob SquarePants (2 sets) Sports (1 set) Star Wars (136 sets) Studios (2 sets) Time Cruisers (2 sets) Town (43 sets) Toy Story (2 sets) Trains (1 set) Video Games (2 sets) Western (11 sets) Quote
TLV Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 Financial constrains has forced me to focus on just castle, which is obivously my favourite, although time to time I do buy some pirates for their beautiful ships and star wars sets cuz I'm a star wars fan as well. I also have bought the occasional farm sets cuz I miss living on a farm,(which I did for one month during my holidays) and the occasional indiana jones and prince of persia sets, but mainly to incorporate its minifigures and elements into my castle collection. I used to collect other series when I was younger. I still have a sizable town, ninja, western, divers, and res-q collection kept away, and most of those sets are still 99% complete. Quote
BearHeart Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 (edited) I buy sets mostly for the parts that will help me in building fantasy themed MOCs. These include sets from : Kingdoms, Pirates Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, some Star Wars, PoP, Creator, some Space Police, some Toy Story. Edited September 7, 2010 by BearHeart Quote
fred67 Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 My favorite theme is trains, but trains goes hand in hand with other themes. I don't particularly like City, but I like the modular buildings; I don't particularly like Creator, but I like the sets of homes. All of these work together for a nice train layout. The only other original theme I really like is the Castle lines, which are pretty much unto themselves. As far as "collectibles," I like Star Wars (OT) and Harry Potter, so I like those sets, but I don't rush out and buy every one released. I like pirates, but I can't even afford the themes I currently buy, but the Imperial Flagship looks amazing, so I would like one of those. Oh... and I like the NASA sets, and would love the new shuttle. I have the Mission to Mars set, and the Saturn V set. Quote
Captain Becker Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 Well i have two, Pirates and Castle/Kindoms. But now when they stopped the Pirates agai i guess i just have Kindoms nd when the new POTC theme will come, that too. Captain Becker Quote
phool Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I basically only collect technic and my collection has expanded considerably over the last two or so years. My wife and I also collected Thomas Duplo for our son and I have a few smaller lego sets which managed to survive my childhood. Quote
Diaaabo Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I am mainly a Star Wars collector. When I got out of my dark age, I first thought of rebuilding my old pirate and castle sets, along with the adventurers stuff. I ended up selling most of my non-Star Wars minifigs so I could buy more SW stuff I kept only some Adventurers minifigs. Nowadays I buy some Creator sets to use for parts and I'm considering buying some new Castle sets, also for parts. Quote
FishHead Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Well, if I were independantly wealthy...I'd collect 'em all! I have all of my classic space and classic castle sets from when I was younger. I also have the classic firestation (374, but in red), fireboat (316), and coastguard station (575). Now that I'm a Daddy, our family collection has branched out a bit. Plus, getting the wife & the little one on-board with collecting Lego has only made the collection that much better! So... The old stuff: Classic Space Classic (yellow) Castle stuff Classic town - odds & ends The new stuff: Lego City Lego City - the farm sets! Some Lego Train Space Police Creator / Modular Buildings I find myself trying to pick up the various classic space sets that I missed when I was younger. Classic space, how do I love thee..... Quote
Erynion Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I don't really collect any themes, just minifigures. I've only gotten one actual set (aside from battlepacks, collectible minifigs, and a couple minifig orders on Ebay) in the past... oh, 6 or 7 years. Back when I was a kid, I would spent almost all of my money on LEGO (usually as soon as I got it) on whatever sets were presently around that struck my fancy. If I were to 'collect' a set it would probably be the fantasy Castle line that's ending now. IMO this was one of the better castle themes over the past few years because it had some originality to it (and I'm a medieval fantasy/LOTR fan). The new Kingdoms series is not attractive to me, IMO it's just another castle series like all the others... At the moment I'd really like to get the Medieval Market Village, but... I just can't get myself to feel right about spending that much on a toy that I really won't use much. Hmm. I'd be interested in hearing how much money the average (young?) AFOL spends on LEGO... I should start a thread... Quote
gotoAndLego Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 (edited) If you like a set buy it. Otherwise in a couple of years, you're going to kick yourself for not getting it just because its not a theme you collected at the time. Edited September 17, 2010 by gotoAndLego Quote
gogobig Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I'm not sure if this has been discussed lately, if it has feel free to add to the existing thread.. About me: I collect a lot of Star Wars (mostly PT), and I mean a lot. I don't have a lot of shelf space left but I can squeeze in a little more if needed. I currently have about 2/3 of my SW collection on display and all my HP, Trains, and TECHNIC put away in bins. Now.. I'm thinking about buying and possibly building a small "army" of the Kingdoms figs/sets. TRU is having the BOGO sale this week so I could take advantage of that and buy the first 2 big sets of the line. I know that once I start this I'll have to finish it off, as well as buy the fall SW sets, and HP sets. This is going to hit my wallet AND shelf space. So I'm wondering if it's too much. I've never had the opportunity to have a decent Castle line so it's a little tempting right now. How many different themes do you AFOLS "juggle"? Only 2 here mate; Castle and Pirates. My castle is about 85% and 15& is pirates. I have well over 1,000 castle figures. I proud myself in customizing and trying to add different faces in order to avoid "clone armies". Pirates I have about 150 minifigs. Quote
NPimenta Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 i was try to build a city, so i only collect the city theme, the only set i have that doesent belong to city, is the indiana jones limited editon "peril in Peru" Quote
The Yellow Brick Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 The theme I mainly Collect is CITY, But I do try to Buy at least 1 or 2 sets from Different theme's Quote
JRBricks Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 We (my kids and I) don't necessarily collect any one particular theme. We usually go for the "cool" sets. We have the modulars - GG, Cafe Corner, Fire Brigade, and Grand Emporium and some road plates to make our version of a city. Throw in some smaller city sets, collectable minifigs and the kids enjoy it and I love the builds. We have the Statue of Liberty, Imperial Flagship, M.Market Village, Space shuttle, Slave I, some Star Wars sets, basically just whatever we think looks fun. They are pretty excited about the new HP Hogwarts castle coming out, so that'll most likely be our first HP set. Quote
