Tycho McKorley Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Hello Eurobricks Castle and Historical Themes Fans, I actually posted this over at Classic-Castle a few weeks ago, but I thought I'd give it a run here in case anyone we interested. I've always been partial to ships from medieval times so I decided to put together a cog. I don't claim it's historically accurate, but it has the stumpy look most cogs seem to have possessed. I imagine this vessel would sit rather low in the water. I decided not to put crenellations on the fore and aft castles because I thought the smooth railings looked better. The Viking shields are not the best, I know, but I like them regardless. :-) Anyway, here are some highlights: Here's a view the ship from the front. I'm not entirely sold on the brick-built sail, but I think it works for now. This is a closer view of the ship from the side. Here's a better view of the triangular front. The angled flat pieces that compose the floor do lie flat on the surface timber wall pieces, but I used a lego hood and some clever engineering (not shown) to keep it anchored securely. The captain of this ship has a very advanced and possibly anachronistic instrument. Finally, here's a comparison shot of the cog with Lego's classic BSB. Here's the Brickshelf folder. And here's the Flickr page for those who prefer that service. Let me know what you think of my MOC. I would appreciate any recommendations you have for its improvement. Quote
Admiral Ron Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 I like it! It has a very medieval/crusading look to it. It does seem a little cramped though, perhaps make it one more hull piece long? Other than that i think it is nearly perfect. And i do like the brick built sails :) Quote
Brig. Brick Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 wonderfull ship, its perfect to make part of the templar's fleet Quote
lightningtiger Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Very nice Cog 'Tycho McKorley' - seems very medieval indeed especially the weapons and steering of the ship too. Great work and I'm a conformist! ! Quote
Tycho McKorley Posted July 7, 2010 Author Posted July 7, 2010 Thank you for the nice comments. I do agree that it might look better if it were longer and I might just have a revision in the works. Out of curiosity though, did anybody notice that the deck is made of the wooden wall pieces (like the ones in Lego's viking fortress or in Fort Legoredo)? Does it work or would smooth brown tiles be better? I'm making another ship of sorts and I could use feedback on this. Quote

I notice, and this structure makes more real the feel of the medieval era, remember, the medieval era is not a deep sail-ship era, their ships looks like floating wooden castles, and you achieved in this MOC Edited July 8, 2010 by Brig.
