Capt.JohnPaul Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 For some reason I have never been into WWII and thought it was boring except for the Battle of Midway. But recently I've picked up the PC game Sudden Strike 3and then something clicked in me and told me I should build a Normandy moc. So I have been working on this and have decided to show you a WIP. And when you're reading this, think of someone saying this to you with a voice of one of those guys on the history channel... The German defenses at Omaha. If you're wondering what that big dot is in the middle, that's my Japan table. I like flags... my room is full of flags hanging from the ceiling and has bedspreads of the Puerto Rico flag and a giant map! Dynamite mines: Pointy thingy and fence: Another pointy thing and that 1x2 tile has a picture of tnt on it... Some barbed wire: A mounted spinning smg and below that a turret. Sorry for the bad quality of this picture, but a tank size turret coming from a window. But then the Allies come with an amphibious landing craft and American personel carrier: The landing craft: It has an opening door and cockpit. Now the personel carrier: It has a turret, (don't know my WWII guns, a AA gun?) and a bigger anti aircraft gun: It is also complete with towers and computer command stations... The front is pointyish and on it is an allied rifleman. I will probably put the people on the big boat on the german side until I get more people, and right now for the sake of filling up the boats. How do you like the wip so far? I will be putting this an actual water because I found some images off google image search of lego ww2 people in real water and they looked cool. Thanks for looking! Joey Lock Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Very nice but I gotta say. It'd help if you could make the landing craft look like the actual LCVP's used. Also the cliff defence were more...cliffy. However I'm just a history addict, So if you have any questions ask me. Quote
Capt.JohnPaul Posted June 29, 2010 Author Posted June 29, 2010 Yes, I am a history addict too Joey, mainly the revolutionary war and ancient roman times, but not so much ww2. I have read the Art of War by Sun Tzu (not the origanal) and then realized how we won at Omahaw. I just got into WWII. The "uncliffy defenses" are just a filler until I get some parts. I would love to make the landing craft better but I'll need to find more gray, black, and dark gray pieces. I am planning on getting some toy story army men sets just so I can get more troops. I would like to make some tanks and make a moc of them fighting in the hedges after normandy, but I don't have treads to make panzers. Oh well... Thanks Joey! Capt.JohnPaul Quote

Capt.JohnPaul Thats the beauty of Bricklink. If you want to put effort into this, your gonna have to buy some stuff. Dunno what Sun Tzu has to do with WWII but ok... But if you need any info on WWII, I'm your guy! Quote

Well, the only reason sun tzu helped us win was because of deception, momentum, spies, and fighting together with no escape, helped us win. And the german generals had interference with the leaders (hitler), which in The Art of War, is bad. And I will buy things. Thanks Joey for your offer to help me with information, what should my landing craft look like more, can I still keep my roll cage on there? I like my cage! Quote

The Germans knew an invasion was iminante, they could also see our ships coming, Why do you think so many men died on Omaha? They were ready, We weren't. We had no tanks, they were let out of the floats too early. We had no accurate air support, All bombs fell on sounds in Normandy like Caen, they hardly touched the Artillery or bunker emplacements on the cliffs. We won purely by numbers and will. The Germans were running out way before Normandy. The LCVP should look like this: Slanted at the front. You can have the Rollcage but they really didn't have them. Quote

I agree they knew we were coming, but according to the history channel, we tricked them that it was coming to attack different beach, not omaha. As for the numbers, as Sun Tzu says, numbers confer no advantage. I do agree with the will thing, they were on a beach, they had to fight or die. A key principle in Sun Tzu's teachings. Quote

No the man with no name case was diffrent. It had plans we were gonna attack from a diffrent area but the Germans took it, Reenforced there but still had many many men at the Atlantic Wall. Numbers do confer an advantage, I don't really care what Sun Tzu says, They do. Russians had many numbers to produce war equipment so they had Thousands of tanks and thousands of tank crews that just overwhelemed the Panzer's. See, Numbers DO matter in war. Even if your the smartest tachtincian in history, If you have no men, What on earth can you do? Quote
KotZ Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Even if your the smartest tachtincian in history, If you have no men, What on earth can you do? Use a nuke? All you need is one man and a big red button... Anyway, Keep working on the MOC, and you definitely need to spend some money to make it epic. And I swear, you and Joey are becoming best pals on here! Quote
Capt.JohnPaul Posted June 29, 2010 Author Posted June 29, 2010 What about Vietnam? USA had half a million troops but we got decimated. Maybe the russians that beat the panzers won because the Germans were afraid, according to Sun Tzu, everyone must be motivated to win and must have the will of the people. And all the greatest battles in history were won with the mind, not the brute force. I agree with you that even with 1 man, you couldn't win. But think about Thermopoly, 300 spartans up against half a million persians? They may have lost, but they held them back for about a week. Think about riot police today, just them up against a Giant MOB! And think about Sun Tzu's time, when his kingdom was being attacked by 300,000 enemies, but he won with only 30 thousand men. The more men vs less men can go either way. Oh, I fixed my landing craft and will take pictures right now! Quote

I would have expected that from a American! Yeah you really are gonna have to spend money, Thats why I wouldn't do Omaha unless your dedicated to it like Armendariz is, His researched it many a times. No offence but you wathced one History Channel documentary, I've watched millions. My knowledge is mostly based on the Axis history, I know nearly everything about the Wehrmacht. Not much about the Americans during WWII cause I don't really care, Apart from France 1944-45. What about Vietnam? USA had half a million troops but we got decimated. But think about it, They were Americans during the Cold War, They thought "Hmm, Nuke + enemy = Win" or "Vietnam? Ha, I never heard of that place before, They must have no guns at all, they probably all have spears!". They had both. Quote
Capt.JohnPaul Posted June 29, 2010 Author Posted June 29, 2010 Well, we underestimated the north Vietnamese, they listened to Sun Tzu and look what happened, they won. Anyways, here are the pics of the lcvp? I made it longer wider and taller and better! Oh, I only put the rollcage in there because on sudden strike 3, I saw people in little boxes (the cockpit) Quote
KotZ Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Just nuke them? I would have expected that from a American! Hey, that's a cheap shot!! Not ALL of us are war-mongers.... I just like big explosions... and watching violent movies like The Kingdom.... Yeah you really are gonna have to spend money, Thats why I wouldn't do Omaha unless your dedicated to it like Armendariz is, His researched it many a times. Not much about the Americans during WWII cause I don't really care, Apart from France 1944-45. Oh, you're going to have to tutor me then Joey on WWII history. I've never really studied it, but I can pick it up pretty efficiently. I know only some of the battles that didn't involve American forces... let's have tea time over it! Anyway, Omaha was pretty epic, and either do a short small MOC on it, or go all out like Armedariz is doing. But think about it, They were Americans during the Cold War, They thought "Hmm, Nuke + enemy = Win" or "Vietnam? Ha, I never heard of that place before, They must have no guns at all, they probably all have spears!". They had both. We looked at Vietnam as a chess board, not a Go-board like the Vietnamese were doing. The two are very different. But hey, it was the Cold War, it was better to be dead than Red... we we're slightly paranoid... but maybe it paid off since the Russians are spying on us again!! But I'm sure there are CIA agents doing the same over in the Kremlin. And we didn't use nukes in Laos... we just used natives and dropped more bombs than Allies and axis did together in WWII!! Too bad that people aren't helping the Hmong out now tho... Quote

Yes, the US general in Vietnam thought battles were fought directely and won directely, but Sun Tzu says, use a direct attack to ENGAGE, and an inderect attack to WIN. Quote
KotZ Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 ok, the new LCVP you've made looks much better. There's better holding capacity, but I don't think it's called a "cockpit" on a ship. It's a helm, er, well I think for a military vehicle like the LCVP. But the design is definitely an improvement... all you need is more! Quote

Ya sorry, I thought helms were only on ships in the 18th century and the age of sail. Like my other post where i added in the rollcage, what else would I call it, "the little box thingy"? Quote
